“Beautiful building, fantastic location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 23, 2013

We stayed here for one night in August 2012 and were very impressed. We arrived very late (after 2:30am) and there was a friendly receptionist waiting for us. The room was spectacular, with a high ceiling, huge bathroom and beautiful decor. The staff at check-out were helpful and the location was great for exploring Palma de Mallorca. We'd very happily return and stay for longer next time!

We had 4 lovely days here and recommend it highly. Staff are first - class, friendly and helpful. The room as delightful, lounges beautiful and restaurant a bit better than you might expect. Breakfast was fresh and eggs etc could be ordered. Care needed with this as breakfast at its normal price was expensive so best to get it included in your deal. The choice of places to sit and read was much greater than you might think and water in the room bars (no alcohol) free. Location was perfect, being in a quiet side street with no cars, just the occasional horse drawn carriage. The relative newness of the hotel shone through throughout and we had no complaints at all. We'll be back.

Okay, so we got the dreaded room 12.... Yes its a little dark & the decoration or lack of is not to everyones liking.. Perhaps its not the highest standard for a junior suite.... But, we still found it charming.. I prefer a little quirkiness to the sometimes sterile suites of the big multinationals anyway.

The hotel is tucked away down a side street, sitting in the courtyard sipping a glass of cava you get envious glances from passers by wondering why they hadn't booked such a classy old worldy boutique hotel..The Staff were all helpful and pleasant, special praise to Oriel (apologies if i have misspelled) for making our meal in the restaurant a very pleasurable experience - not only the food & wine, but also recommendations for other restaurants.

There was one in particular that we loved - Es Faro in Port de Soller, a stunning setting over looking the bay and superb fresh fish. Expensive, but well worth it. (Take the old train from top of Playa d'Espana to Soller and then the tram to Port de Soller, then a taxi @ €12 e.w. up to the Es Faro - or you could walk, though its a good 30 minutes uphill...)

Other notable eateries we enjoyed were Simply Fosh (posh - taster menu) & Forn de Sant Joan (high class tapas), we also enjoyed drinks in various bars in the La Longa area and loved the music in Jazz Voyeur also in the same area... clearly one of the happening parts of Palma nightlife..

I'm glad we picked Can Cera, there are improvements that can be made, but I can see why its rated No.1 as it has its own unique charm that is priceless..

Room Tip: Perhaps not 12....

A delightful building in a great location, I was particularly impressed by the first floor lounge rooms which are elegant and richly furnished. It's a shame that the same attention hadn't been paid to my room (no12) which was advertised as a 'junior suite' but was very sparse indeed, the only seating being three, mismatched dining chairs. It was also very gloomy as the only source of lighting at night was two rather dim bedside lights. And I really didn't like the fact that the bathroom didn't have a door, and that there wasn't a separate shower. All in all, just not good enough for a hotel of this price and pretension.

This was a lovely hotel in the center of the city. It was perfect for us traveling with our 9 year old son. The staff was very friendly, the restaurant was good and the decor was lovely old Spanish colonial manor style. Really a perfect place to stay for two nights.

We enjoyed our stay at C'an Cera. The reception team were helpful and gave us a great recommendation for dinner. The location was ideal - right in the heart of the old town (although 5-10 minutes walk from the underground parking we were directed to at 25 euros a day). There were a couple of things that took the edge off it though that seemed unnecessary. We booked a junior suite. Of course there is a wide variety of interpretations of what consitutes a junior suite, but a comfortable sofa or a couple of arm chairs would be the minimum I would expect. The junior suite we were in (room 12) had only three wooden dining style chairs and a stool at the foot of the bed.

Additionally, there was no walk-in shower, just a shower head in the bath that didn't have a setting to hold it above head height without it spraying out over the bathroom. This made washing hair challenging! The website says that there are dvd players in the rooms. Ours did not have one, and when we queried this with reception, they just confirmed that this was not available.

When I reflect back on the stay, I can think of the things that we really liked about the hotel (location, bed, tiny balcony for watching the Easter parade, roof terrace), but our expectations were not met based on the room description and price.

We were taken care of courteously and professionally, even before we arrived, with the hotel's reception staff e-mailing us, on request, their advice on the best way to travel to Can Cera from the airport. Taxi is the most convenient option but at a cost. We chose to take the bus for a few euros. Route no.1 leaves from opposite the terminal building and you get off at Avinguda Gabriel Alomar, 39, leaving a 5/10 minute walk to the hotel. On arrival at the hotel, we were greeted warmly and provided with a complimentary glass of cava in the courtyard cafe, while completing the formalities. Lucia Quijada and Carlos Vazquez were very helpful, but so were all the hotel staff. We were given a tour of the hotel and shown to our palatial room. It was my partner's birthday on the day we arrived and our room had been upgraded. A bottle of wine had been left for us in the room, courtesy of the hotel. The room overlooked the courtyard and was very comfortable, with everything you would expect in a 5-star boutique hotel. It is worth spending a little time looking round Can Cera. The drawing rooms are beautifully furnished and there is space to sit and take in the art hanging on the walls, or read. Don't miss the roof-top view of the neighbourhood from the terraza, accessed through a small door in the TV room. There is also a spa in the hotel, which you would need to book in advance. We didn't eat at the hotel, as it happened. We took the recommendation of another reviewer and ate at L'Ambigu, a great little tapas bar just the other size of Santa Eulalia, not far from the hotel (open in the evenings, but not lunchtime - at least in January). There are various places to have breakfast close to the hotel, which we chose to do. The hotel is located at the top of the city, not far from the Cathedral. The local streets are a maze but great fun to explore. If you enjoy cycling, then consider hiring some bikes. Palma has some really good, properly-marked cycle lanes that run for miles. We found a bike hire place at the start of Passeig des Born, close to the city walls, and rode up to the port, then back and out to Es Portixol and beyond for a fish lunch. In short, Palma is a very good choice for a short city break and I would certainly stay at Can Cera again. It was very hard to find fault with anything at the hotel. The lighting in the room was perhaps a little subdued and other reviewers have commented on the see-through toilet doors in the bathroom. Not everyone's cup of tea! But these were minor quibbles and, overall, our experience of Can Cera was excellent.

Excelente hotel en el caso antiguo. Buena acogida y muchos detalles a lo largo de nuestra estancia. Recomendado.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
At over 700 years old, Can Cera has one of the longest histories in Palma. The building dates back to before 1232 when Jaume I conquered the island with Catalan and Aragonese troops. Located inside the ancient city walls close to the Cathedral, Can Cera is in the very heart of the Old City, between the Plaza de Santa Eulalia and the Plaza de San Francisco. Over the years, Can Cera’s many owners have made alterations to the original building. The most important of these were done in the 17th Century, when –as in many of the surrounding houses– Italian Renaissance architects inspired the creation of the celebrated patios, giving the houses their singularly attractive, yet austere, character. Inside, the house is significant and rich with well-proportioned rooms, high ceilings of sculptured plasterwork, balconies and above all, palatial adornments. Today, Can Cera, has been thoroughly renovated and equipped as a first class Hotel. The traditional Majorcan patio, with its majestic arches, exuberant Kentia and other lush plants, leads to the Reception area and the Can Cera Restaurant. A marble stairway leads up to a surprising space: a comfortable and welcoming Home with its original layout intact. Period furniture and contemporary paintings abound. ... more   less
