“I loved this Place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 6, 2011

Not sure if it was Olga's or not but I fell in love with San Sebastian. It was one of those Hostels where everything just felt right. The staff was friendly and the other tourists were just as friendly.

It has an amazing location right near the main beach and stones throw to countless great tapas joints. When I say great tapas places, mean a place that had incredible selection and a bar tender that after a day or so would just randomly fill your drinks.

It also has electronic lock boxes so you know your gear is safe. Basically, I'd recommend this place to anyone going to San Sebastian on a budget and would without a doubt stay there again. Loved it.

It's a hostel... and so with it comes all things hostel. In my experience, whether you love or hate a hostel comes down to only a few things; safety, cleanliness, basic service, and the people who are staying there at the time. The hostel really only has control of the first 3. Olga's was clean, the rooms and beds were just fine, the people working the front desk were friendly, and overall it was a safe environment. We had a great time while we were there and would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for an inexpensive way to enjoy San Sebastian.

We were arriving in town during the film festival so all the other places in our preferred budget range (hotels/pensions etc) were booked out. Given the positive feedback & availability, we went with Olga's. It's a good location, not far from Zurriola Beach & a walking distance into the old part of the city and La Concha (it's all flat).

I won't rate the hostel as highly as half the reviews I'd read - agree the staff were really nice and helpful. If you are on a budget & under 20 / travelling alone / looking for a young crowd it would be a good option. There is free internet - but only one pc to use. Waiting times can border on stupid (people to booking their stupid busabout which apparently is a crap website to use & takes ages..) anyway..

Rooms were clean enough & beds comfortable. We shared room 6, which had 4 single beds - not bunks, which was great. Downside - no where to hang clothes, no shelves & could only just get my stretchy elastic clothes line hooked around a pipe & the window. Simple things to work on which would make a big difference. Rooms had super dark block out shutters so the (potentially) glaring sun didn't get into the room, not that it came out during our stay. Keeps the noise of the cars below out too. And the guy who plays the plastic set of pan pipes to announce his arrival to the street & his services (knife sharpener I think?).

Some showers on our floor were hand held numbers which I hate, though the one in the separate room which wasn't. Hooks on the back of shower doors had also broken off.

The most annoying thing about this hostel was the constant idiotic squealing of the other guests at all hours- night and day. Not only did management tolerate this, they seemed to actively encourage it, by also sitting up drinking and listening to music until 1am (despite their signs saying ´´please respect other guests by being quiet after 11pm´´). We put up with this for two nights, but on the third night I went out to speak to the person in charge, who was incapable of dealing with the situation (one too many beers??) He got Olga, the owner, who handled the situation by yelling at me, saying ´this is a hostel, not a hotel...it´s party time in San Sebastian´... We´ve stayed in lots of hostels and we know what acceptable noise is...this was just inconsiderate, and at 30 euro per person per night, I would expect to be able to sleep, and not to have to be the one asking the employees to be quiet.

Yes, the beds were clean (although I can´t say the same for the bathrooms...unless you consider vomit and mud on the floor to be clean??)

While Olga can´t change the personality of her guests, perhaps she could tell them that screaming profanities at 9am, and drunken yelling and squealing throughout the day and night, isn´t acceptable behaviour, no matter where you stay.

Do yourself a favour, stay somewhere else if you intend to sleep at all.

PS: The location is not that great, San Sebastian is very small, so everywhere will be in walking distance of major sights and the beach.

I´m not sure where all the glowing reviews are coming from, but Olga´s was far from great in any way. While the actual bed was fine, most everything else was average or below. There was no heat in the room, the lighting throughout is dingy, a couple of the showers are non-functional and one of the computers has more viruses than a Tijuana hooker. When informed of the viruses, the Eastern European thug handyman shrugged his shoulders. Not recommended.

Don't get me wrong Olgas was spotlessly clean but..........the security staff are an absolute disgrace there. There are two big men - who we were never introduced to on arrival - who go around in Secuity t-shirts banging on your door if you so much as cough past 11 o'clock. I understand that you must keep the noise levels to a minimum in your room, to be fair to other lodgers, but the approach of the security staff is SO aggressive. In fact, our door was being shaken one night so much that us girls (5 in total) were almost shaking in our beds and when we refused to open OUR door, they marched down to get the spare key. They have no hesitation in just opening your door with their key and marching into the room - they are very intimidating - esp as a group of girls. One night a security man barged in when only one of the girls was on her own - he told her to "go to sleep" and turned off the lights!!the light swithches are on the outside so they like to take control of these.
I aired my concerns about the security on departure but received no satisfaction. I was told that these men are "harmless. that they see no sex when they enter a room - (presume they meant here that dont see if you are girl or not) and it is very safe and legal in Spain to do this". Maybe so....but I, and my friends, will certainly not be staying there again. In the end of the day it is a hostel so I think if you are looking for no noise and privacy, stay in a hotel. Slogan for Olgas should definitely be "No Fun after 11....or we'll come get you!!!"

Anya and Olga are just awesome. There are plenty of clean bathrooms, even one with a bathtub. Great showerheads, spotless. They make our beds in the morning. Theres a great terrace for socilaizing. Washing machine, full service kitchen, internet, TV. But it truly is Anya, the coolest Russian girl and Olga that make this place so great. This in one of the best hostels I've stayed in
