“Great hotel in superb San Sebastian”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

My husband booked a surprise weekend trip for us to San Sebastian and the Amara Plaza was perfect. We arrived at Biarritz airport and caught the PESA bus to SS - we were pleasantly surprised when the bus pulled up right outside the hotel - my husbnad couldn't have planned it any better. Check in was smooth and our room was very nice. My only warning would be on the heating/air conditioning system. We cam back later in the evening and our room was boiling. I went to reception and the guy told us that system is moved to heating in October and we should just leave the system off if we want a cool room. It would have been good if someone had told us that before as we had to move rooms that night. Both rooms we were in were clean and nice and modern - and nice an quiet considering the bus station is just outside.

The location was very convenient for us. We hired the bikes that are available all around the city - you can organise this at the tourist information centre - and there was a stop right outside the hotel. With the bikes we were at the old town in about 5 minutes. It was probably about a 15 -20 minute walk which was also nice.

Breakfast was lovely - really great they served for so long - especially after the amount of food we ate in the evening. We generally went for breakfast about 10:00 - 10:30 and there was a huge spread. My husband especially liked to iberico ham!

We had a brilliant time in San Sebastian - we loved the city and all the amazing food. We will definitely recommend this hotel to others - and hope to be back ourselves soon!

The hotel is perfectly located, with the bus station located next door, travel is made easy, and causes minimal noise that while in the hotel it's easy to forget its there!

The staff were very friendly, patient and helpful in every way, all of our needs from an iron to booking a taxi were all dealt with easily and professionally, especially the bar tender in the piano bar. Faultless service on his part.

The hotel is about a 15 minute walk from the old town and beach but for us who enjoy a walk it wasn't a problem, the streets of the city are pretty and there is plenty to see and various shops and small bars to catch your attention.

We ate in the hotel restaurant on our third night and although the choices were limited the food was good, nice value and you could tell it had been made with care and passion. As a bit of a foodie and a person in that line of work it didn't match up to some of the other places iv eaten but I appreciated the traditional and genuine Spanish dishes! Dessert was divine!

Just a 20minute drive from the French border San Sebastian was the relaxing beach focused part of our road trip through France. After a long wait to check in (admittedly I think the language barrier with the guests in front of us was the issue) the room was a wonderful surprise - a spacious room and impressive bathroom. The views were good too. We were a little bit worried about the 20 minute walk in to town but it was a nice stroll in the mornings and evenings. The onsite restaurant was excellent and extremely reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend this hotel to others.

We got to our hotel hassle free, the PESA bus from Bilbao stops right beside the hotel. Its a bit of a walk to the main part of town but SS is so small and charming that we didnt mind the 15 min walk...Rooms were big, nice view of the river, well maintained and very clean. Bed was comfy and everything worked. Cant ask for anything more! Will stay here again when in SS!

We stopped for 3 nights. It's bang next to the bus station which is ideal for the transfer from the airport. Friendly staff at reception. We were on the 6th floor, overlooking the bus station. Only heard a bit of noise but it isn't bad if you keep the window shut. Our room had a surprise balcony which was unexpected & I think there must only be a couple in the whole hotel. A lot of lovely toiletries are left for you. Didn't eat breakfast there as we found it not worth the €16 per person when there is that much lovely food out & about. The walk into town is a bit of a trek so if you aren't into walking I suggest you get the bus or taxi. If its raining they will lend you an umbrella which is very handy. Room are kept very tidy. If I went again would prob try & get a hotel nearer the old town but this one was very good value.

Room Tip: Room 606 has a little balcony

This hotel is quite close to the railway station and right beside a bus station from which trips to other towns can be taken. It is a fair walk to the seafront or old town around 20 minutes but local San Sebastian bus Nos 26 and 28 will take you to the "Boulevard" for 1.45 euros. The parking is adjacent to the hotel but costs 16euros per day.
The buffet breakfast was very good with a wide choice available.Room comfortable and quiet

Super location by the river and easy to get to old town.
Very helpful front desk.
Spacious rooms
On one side of the hotel the rooms face city bus parking lot, 10 to 15 buses there idling all day till 2AM and then beginning at 5AM - arc lights shine all night.
On the picture above, the left side of the high rise hotel.
Room shades do not block out the outside lights.
Bath floor was not well cleaned - brown dirt tracked.
Shower temperature varied from hot to cold for 15 seconds to 45 seconds at a time.
We were told that the A/C was turned off in the hotel. Only heat. This was October 1 and 2.
Temperature outside was from 15 to 25 (60 to 80).
How does one cool the room with the buses outside, running their diesel engines all day and most of the night.
Very slow free internet - but the hotel does give the option to buy faster.

Room Tip: Check the room and out the window - be sure you are not facing the bus terminal.
