“Good Location For Beach With Easy Access To Old Town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 12, 2009

After some of the reviews on trip advisor we were a little sceptical, DONT BE this is a morden standard four star spanish hotel. The staff are friendly but not in your face, The hotel is spotless and confortable, the rooms cleaned properly and the beds were very wide and confortable with nice quality clean sheets. There is spare pillows and blankets in the rooms.
Our room 307 was the most spacious standard twin room we have ever stayed in complete with large bathroom with window ! The water pressure and hot water were constant at all hours.
The room was a little noisy from the traffic but as the Air Con actually worked as it should it did not matter if you keept the windows shut . You can also leave the air con on wile you are out which makes it really nice to return to a cool room.
The breakfast is from 07.00-10.30 and was a wide selection of meat, cheese, fruit, and bacon and eggs + lots more, very nice eat as much as you like and full self service running buffet.
We ate a couple of nights in the hotel reasturant and the food mainly fish was exellent and not bad value for money aprox 50 euros for two meals and bottle of wine and water.
One of the best features of this hotel is that it is a 5 min walk to the orrenetta beach ( which is beautful ) it is about 10 mins walk to the combe of the sea sculpture park and finicular railway which takes you up mount urgual with fantastic views nice cafe bar and a faided fun fair.
Have a drink in the Mercure hotel which has the best sea views from the huge lounge windows.
It takes aprox 30 mins stroll from the hotel into the old town by walking along the seafront promanade or beach which is very pleasant, alternatively the number 5 and 25 buses run frequently from outside the hotel with flat fares of 1.50 euros
most of the hotel staff can speak a little English and if you have some Spanish you can get by.
San Sebastian is a lovely resort quite classy like St Tropez or Biaritz but in Spain and can be quite pricey but we feel the hotel offered good value for money.

We stayed in this modern hotel for three nights while in Donostia. Although I agree that it may be pushing it to call it a four star, it is more than a simple three. It is excellently situated for both beaches, for the former royal palace and for the funicular to the pleasure gardens and viewpoint to the west. The district it is in is very pleasant, with bars, foodshops and a small supermarket, as well as attractive old houses. The main town is about 30 minutes walk away, but easily accessible using the bus.

Donostia is a great little city, and the Hotel San Sebastian is a good place to stay unless you want to be in the centre of the main city area.

I liked this hotel -- it was clean and sunny, with great big bathrooms -- but I don't think it warrants four stars. As such it was a little on the pricey side. However, it's in a great neighborhood bordering the estate district and a nice stroll along the boardwalk to the center of town. If you need to get anywhere fast, the bus is right outside the door and runs all the time. There's also a nice little antiques shop right next door that's worth visiting.

I stayed here with my girlfriend for a long weekend and despite terrible weather we had a great time.
This was in no small part due to the comfortable suite and delicious food we had at the hotel.

Most 4stars are very hit and miss as regards the type of food they serve (as in frozen or pre-packaged), but the traditional Basque cooking we tried here was way beyond usual hotel food. I recommend the "Cogote de Merluza" which is actually the head and shoulder portion of hake served with a refrito of garlic. My girlfriend loved the croquetas (fried breadcrumbed bechemel and spanish ham) and we especially liked all the homemade desserts.

My only gripes would be the noisy maid service, who, as another reviewer mentioned, will wander into your room at any time of day - hint: use the do not disturb sticker! The cafeteria staff only speak spanish but thats more of an observation.

The beach is literally 2 minutes away from the hotel and walking to the center of town took us only 15 minutes along the gorgeous promenade.

I´m hoping to return for a longer stay this summer.

I would have to say that generally I was very satisfied with the hotel itself. The location is good, close to Ondarreta beach (which is nicer for me than La Concha), in very nice neighborhood, with cafes, restaurants and supermarkets around, well connected with the city center by buses and within 20-30 minutes walk to the old part, along the beautiful Paseo La Concha. The room was good-sized, with comfortable beds, although the chairs were the worst I have ever tried. Bathroom was large, with a bathtub and good water pressure. A lot of space in the closet for clothes, LCD TV, etc. All in all, very nice and clean.

Breakfast is not inluded in the price and it costs around 14 EUR and is well worth the price. Good selection of different foods, coffee, juices and everything delicious. Breakfast service was great.

With all the positive impressions about the hotel itself, I was very dissappointed with the service in a 4-star hotel. Reception staff was rather cold and uninterested - they would not even look at you when saying "good morning" - although the check-in and check-out was smooth. The maid service was ridiculous - the rooms were well maintained and cleaned, but you could expect them to enter your room any time between 9AM and 5PM without even knocking. Even if your room had been cleaned up, they would just bump into your room again for no obvious reasons. It was actually funny to see on almost all doors along the hallway the signs "do not disturb" or "please make up my room" since it was the only was to "communicate" with the maids and prevent them from entering your room when they wished. Furthermore, the noise they were making was sometimes unbelievable - shouting between themselves, throwing beds in room above yours, vacuum-cleaning the hallways early in the morning etc. The service in hotel caffeteria was even worse. The staff was completely uninterested, you could sit for 20-30 minutes before they ask you would like something to drink. One time I was persistent to see how long they would look at me and ignore my presence - it took them 25 minutes to take my order (it was not crowded). The price for the same order was different every single time - I do not have a clue why.

To sum up, I liked the hotel but the hotel service ruined my good impressions.

stayed july 2008, stayed with my family rooms were very nice clean tv work (in spanish ) Beware €15 to park the car for one night, also breakfast wasnt included 13.50 a head but it was nice, staff very friendly and helpful, the hotel is a good 20 min walk to the old town and a taxi back! it is very close to a fabulous beach (2 mins) with a beauiful setting, I had children with me but would go back with out them just to do a tour of the small bars and their tappas, beautiful town well worth a visit

  • Liked — very high standard
  • Disliked — parking fees and charge for breakfast for 5 (wasnt expecting it)

We stayed at the Hotel San Sebastian for four days after having a bit of a problem finding accomodation at that time of year, everywhere seemed to be booked solid but the hotel itself was very quiet, particularly during the week. We were the only ones at breakfast some mornings. The hotel itself is a bit out of the way and a fair walk from the town and restaurants etc but the walk along the bay was generally quite welcome after the amount of food we ate. The rooms were spacious and spotlessly clean and we were given a quiet room as requested. Good choice of food at breakfast, with lots of fresh fruit and coffee as well as hot food if you wanted it. We didn't eat in the restaurant but it seemed pretty popular during the day...it was too much of a walk to go back there for dinner..once we were out, we were out!!! All in all, a nice comfortable hotel but a bit out of the action...mind you the weather was pretty awful when we were there so that probably didn't help. Beautiful town though and fabulous food.

  • Liked — Cleanliness and spaciousness of room
  • Disliked — Location a bit far out of town
