I found the Bilbao restaurant reviews that I read before my visit a bit challenging because nowhere seemed to really stand out.
Fortunately a friend recommended Maider and I found it well worth the money.
Emphasis on sea food, great house wine, and our waiter showed extraordinary concern to be sure that we understood the menu and really cared that we enjoyed our food. He was attentive without being intrusive and turned what would have been a very good experience into a standout.
You can safely stick with the house wine here.
Emphasis on seafood but the menu had something for everybody. There were menus in English but none of the staff spoke it so you're best-off going with someone who speaks Spanish to be sure of making the most of the specials, which aren't translated, and off-menu items that seem to be on offer once the staff realize that they have foodies in the house.
