“Exceeded expectations; perfect location for Guggenheim”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2010

This hotel is located directly across the street from the Guggenheim. We stayed on the fourth floor and our room had an unobstructed view of both the Guggenheim profile and Koons' puppy. Great way to start each morning! I cannot vouch for the views from rooms located on the other side of the hotel.

The room was moderately sized with decor leaning toward modern and playful rather than antiques. Although the front desk referred to our room as a "suite," it was only one room (I think most American hotel "suites" include a sitting room separate from the sleeping room). The room and linens were clean. Also, there were two "suitcase stands" (I'm sure there's a name for these, but I don't know what it is) which was quite helpful considering that we were traveling with multiple pieces of luggage on this trip.

The bathroom was well equipped with plenty of hot water. Only two shower/bath towels were provided (I noticed this trend throughout all of Spain) along with two hand towels. No wash cloths were provided, however, housekeeping was efficient in providing clean towels every day.

Public areas of the hotel were a bit trendy. We did not eat or drink in any of the hotel properties since there were so many other dining options available. (For seriously good food, try Mina across the river from the Bilbao food market.) The front desk was always helpful and all the staff we encountered spoke excellent English. We did find the hotel to be slightly understaffed (at most times throughout the day there was only one front desk person and one porter/doorman), but again, we found this issue throughout most of Spain. Generally, an excellent hotel and we would certainly return to this property.

I landed in Bilbao on the way to San Sebastian and wasn't sure I would be able to get back in time to visit the city properly after my work was finished. I wanted a hotel as close as possible to the Guggenheim Museum so as to be able to visit at least that.
The only way to be closer to the Museum is actually to be sleeping inside it! It is right across the street, and my room had a very nice view of it (though make sure you ask for this, as I heard other customers complaining about their view). The breakfast room is on the top floor and has a breathtaking view. I had breakfast at daybreak, and watching the light begin to emerge over the Museum was lovely.
The rooms are stylish. One feels that an effort has been made to echo the Guggenheim's architecture. I only spent a very little time in the actual hotel, but on the basis of my stay I would recommend it wholeheartedly especially to those who want to stay close to the Museum.

We passed through Bilbao on our way to San Sebastian and wanted a place to crash for one night.

The good:
- Location is excellent, it literally is on the doorstep of the Guggenheim
- Tram stop 2 mins walk away which connects you to the old town and also the central bus station
- The rooms are rather sound proof and the beds very comfortable
- Good supply of amenities

The bad:
- We booked a standard room without a view and was disappointed to find that it was a room which looked into the atrium (the hotel is shaped like a donut). It looks directly to another room's curtains and felt rather claustrophobic.

Overall a lovely place, though next time I would definitely spend the extra 10 euros on a room with a view.

You really can't do better than stay right across the road from the Guggenheim. This is a new hotel, beautifully designed and elegant. Rooms are typically French and hence not particularly large. The hotel is donut shaped, with a multi-story well in the centre containing a large sculpture made up of stones. The shape I leave to your own interpretation. The problem that arises from this design is that it creates a kind of sound funnel so that if your room faces into this internal well you may be bothered by sounds from the lobby below. I never travel without ear plugs so it wasn't a big deal, but worth being aware of. The hotel describes itself as five star, but it isn't. The service levels make this a clearly four star hotel, albeit an unusually attractive one. Be aware that dinner is not served in the dining room until 9.30pm. The Spaniards are fine with this, we found it rather too late at night.

Was a bit disappointed by the one bedroom suite which is billed as having a terrace on the top floor overlooking the Guggenheim; the walls and furniture were scuffed and the sofa was all style at the expense of comfort; and the terrace was a thin ledge badly maintained with three metal chairs but no table so breakfast on your balcony is not really an option. But the truth is that there is no point getting a top floor room; do get one with a view over the museum, that is well worth it; and you can have breakfast anyway on the top floor in the hotel's excellent restaurant with a huge terrace overlooking the Guggenheim (which is literally across the road). The bathroom was a bit of a let down as well; while huge, the shower was a bit impractical on a raised wooden dais, and the bath was in a dark corner.
But please do not be put off by these comments; be sensible and get a standard room with a view; the location of the hotel is perfect both for easy access to the Guggenheim abd for some excellent restaurants nearby. The staff are really friendly and casual and the hotel has a very relaxed vibe.

I have never been to Bilbao before and therefore wanted to stay close to the Guggenheim. The Silken Gran Hotel Domine seemed just perfect from all I was able to see on the internet. As I had planned a lot of activities I decided on a room not facing the Museum, and as always I requested a Nonsmoking room. What a bad mistake.
The room was facing inside the hotel, therefore you can't open any windows. This means either air condition or hot room. As the hotel is actually a cheap version of a 5-Star-Wannabe, as soon as you leave the room (and therefore take your room key with you and out of the slot within the room), the ac is off, which means you cannot cool down the room while you're away and turn the ac off when you're in the room.
The room itself is dark and the material use is cheap.
The room I was in smelled horribly and I assume it was due to the fact that is was a smoking floor - ashtrays all over the place.
The Room was big an so was the bathroom and there was a large amount of nice little things available, however, some of the carton boxes were empty, which means that housekeeping did not check. The bathroom is in desperate need of a once over. Things are broken and there are mildew spots. Remember, we are talking 5 stars here.
Also, when I booked the room thru hrs.de I was promised a bottle of water upon arrival as well as WiFi. There was no bottle of water and I never experienced such a bad WiFi anywhere else.
Sorry, but this hotel might look nice from the outside, but it doesn't live up to a 5 Star standard.
