“Great food and service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2014

A last minute decision to book a table at Porrue turned out to be an excellent decision although I'm sure we could have got a table without booking as remained less than full all evening. We had the Spring tasting menu which included sardines, cod and sea bass. Service was attentive but relaxed, quite a contrast with our more formal experience at Zortziko a few night earlier. The waiter recommended a great local white wine which was an excellent accompaniment to our menu. Overall very good value for money for a Michelin starred restaurant.

“I still feel the food in my vains”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2014

Was this a dream? We were asking to ourselves on our way back from the restaurant. We still keep telling the people our fanstactic experience.
This restaurant is a unique place. All the plates served are delicately prepared and makes you feel high. If you choose the chef's menu (Mr. Unai Campo who is a very nice person serving the tables himself as well) they bring you 8 different plates in their order.
Every plate comes in different designed dishes. The food combination is extremely elegant.
I would go back to Bilbao even just to eat again in Porrue.

“Mildly underwhelmed, but still very good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

This place had been recommended to us, and the reviews backed it up. We had the tasting menu, and it was a bit of a mixed bag.

The fish dishes were, in the main, exceptional. Sardines in a complex but wonderfully balanced tomato sauce, a cod dish that was brought alive by a wonderful salty cockle risotto, and seabass on dashi broth was also divine.

Salmon tartar with coffee was interesting. I didn't think you could really jazz up salmon tartar too much, but there was smoke, and there was a little bitterness infused with the coffee, and it worked.

The banana nitromousse also came with smoke, as you might expect, was perched on some cardamom "dirt" and it was very decent.

However, the duck with quinoa and almond was disappointingly bland. The strawberry stuffed with mascarpone tasted entirely of ... a large was of mascarpone. And the egg and mushroom dish was rather astringent and actively unpleasant. A matter of taste, maybe.

So three exceptional dishes, two good ones, two mehs, and one nothankyouverymuch.

Service was efficient, and the restaurant environment itself is interesting - quite contemporary, with an industrial edge. A substantial wine list, though you'd need to be an expert on Spanish wine to truly understand its quality.

If I came here again, I'd probably go for fish off the pretty pricy a la carte menu. They can clearly cook fish. But you can eat great food in Bilbao cheaper than this, and we probably wouldn't return in all honesty. Despite the fact that it's very good, there's better value elsewhere.

“Just stunning!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 18, 2014

If in Bilbao, just go there! Make sure to book a table in advance, because it can become quite crowded in the evening.
Anyway - we went there for my birthday. And it was just a blast! Perfect, incredibly friendly service, great ambience, and - not to forget - fantastic food! The menu was just awesome (we went for for the "winter menu") and the wine recommendation was also perfect! And not expensive at all - keeping in mind that the restaurant is very close to the famous Guggenheim Museum.
Expect modern cuisine with a local influence. Their "bread with cheese" (served as our 2nd desert) was a "never to forget" experience ;-)
Only minor "bémol": The fish (monkfish) was slightly over cooked - thus: too dry. 2 minutes less - and it would have been absolutely perfect. Because the taste was terrific! But - aren't we all human beings? Next time we go there - and there will be a next time for sure - I already know that even this little "fault" will be corrected.
HUGE THANKS also go to the chef who made us feel like "friends" - and not as "just paying customers". What a great experience!
Although you can have food there most of the day - don't show up there before 21:30 - better: 22:00. You won't regret it!
Conclusion: The "Porrue" immediately became one of our "top places to go to" when in Bilbao. If you go for the seasonal menu - you won't be disappointed!

“Doesn't deserve a Michelin Star”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

it deserves two!
What a pleasure to write a review of such a splendid restaurant.
We turned up late one afternoon without booking (sorry) and were welcomed and saw at once how professional they are. The "L" shaped restaurant is quite small but nicely decorated with a major extract duct running through it. In stainless steel they have made it a feature and it complements the massive wine cabinets.
We opted for selections from the menu as we didn't feel hungry enough to tackle the many courses on the tasting menu.
Asking for a suggestion of a local wine to go with fish, the waiter recommended the cheapest wine on the list (16€) which turned out to be exceptional.
The service was efficient, friendly, relaxed and had all the usual top end restaurant tricks such as liquid nitrogen and blow torches handled with great aplomb.
The food was presented faultlessly, with such subtlety of flavour, imaginative ingredients and style which showed off the chef's skill and flair. There was not one thing out of place and made our trip to Bilbao memorable.
I seriously predict this restaurant will get two stars and let us hope it doesn't lose it's unstuffy ambience.

Estimated wayzy.
Thanks for sharing your review on Tripadvisor.
You're very kind to say that our restaurant is worth 2 Michelin stars but what makes us really happy is to have your trip to Bilbao turned into something to remember.
