“It's Worth the Climb...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

...to see one of the oldest surving Christian churches in the world. To get the most from the visit I recommend reading up on the church before visiting. It would get 5 stars just for being so old. The view from the site is great, too, especially during winter.

“Beautiful views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 5, 2012

The trip up Monte Naranco is well worth it for the views over Oviedo and the two small but important 9th century monuments (about 300-400 meters from each other). The guardian seems to alternate between the two and opens them alternately approximately every 30 minutes or so at peak times. He is a friendly amiable man. Mondays are free.

“Nice little church”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 5, 2012

I feel rather guilty only rating this as average. It is a world heritage site after all and given that this was one of the reasons for our trip, you might expect that we'd be more enthusiastic.

However, the overall effect is rather subdued. There is a guided tour, but only in Spanish and that's the only way you seem able to enter the building. At least that's what we were told when we tried to get in (and the the same was true of the neighbouring Santa Maria del Naranco), so the interior remains a mystery to us. The outside was impressive, but without much context, it was difficult to appreciate the church for what it is.

There's a handy visitors' centre, but most of the information is in Spanish and again, it's difficult to make sense of it. If you arrive on foot, you have to follow signs for the car park, near the bus stop. It's a short walk thereafter. You can walk up the road, as we did because we missed the significance of the car park, but it's longer and can be awkward with cars. It was about a 20 minute walk from our hotel, but there is a bus too from the centre of town.

Worth a trip but you might have to tag along to a tour just to see the inside.

“Frescos”

Preromanic church with frescos of special kind. Gided tours is avalable. Find trip from the Oviedo sentrum by foot uphill (30-45 min).

“Travel centuries back...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2012

The San Miguel de Lillo is a small church in the Naranco area. Due to water damage from nearby river it has been remodeled several times, yet it is priceless.
