“GREAT hotel, just not so pretty on the outside”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2013

We stayed here for two nights. The staff was very friendly, and actually spoke more English and were able to answer our questions better than the staff at the Holiday Inn in Madrid. Our room was huge and well kept up. We loved the wall that was nothing but a window and that it had an electric shade to give us privacy as well. The bathroom was huge as well.

The only things are that the outside is hideous. The building sticks out like a sore thumb. We also walked from the train station, since it was a pretty short walk, but once we got to the building we could not find the entrance to the hotel at all. We finally had to have a mall security guard show us where to go.

My husband and I spent 3 nights at the Ayre Oviedo. We had an overall great experience. The place is one of the kind and we enjoyed studying the building from every angle. The room was large and, of course, we were eager to play with the lights of the bed board and nigh tables after seen all the pictures on line. We had the most beautiful view of the mountains surrounding Oviedo! The bathroom had a tub and a separate shower with multiple water spouts. The shower mechanism was complicated to operate, I had to play around for a while before figuring how it work. Really, it was not a great deal shower-spa experience. The rest of the bathroom was nice.
The reason why I'm not giving this hotel 5 points is because we requested Matrimonial bed and we were given two single beds next to each other that, unlike other hotels, these beds were not attached and they separated with a little push. When we brought to the receptionist attention that we requested a Matrimonial bed, he said that the hotel was full and they didn't have any other accommodations. The hotel didn't look full to us during our stay. Besides this inconvenience, the beds and pillows were very comfortable!
The hotel is located about 15 minutes walk to the center of town and the old city. It seemed safe to walk at night in the neighborhood. There is a 3-floor mall underneath the building with multiple stores and restaurants and a Corte Ingles supermarket.
We didn't have breakfast at the hotel. There is a coffee shop across the street and a fabulous mom&pop restaurant filled with locals around the corner called Sidreria La Aldea. Skip Gascona street for sidra and have dinner at La Aldea, the same experience, half the price!!!
I definitely would recommend Ayre Hotel to anyone staying in Oviedo, it's a great opportunity to experience modern architecture from the inside!!

Not seen anything as different of the architecture of this hotel in Oviedo. Service was good, room was very modern and stunning and the bathroom top quality. It was a real contrast to the historical grandeur of the Leon Parador where we had stayed the night before.

Quite hard to find and also a 15 minute walk into town.

Very futuristic building that you will either love or hate. I loved it

The architecture and décor is very stunning but the hotel lacked atmosphere. Our room was huge (a junior suite) but it felt a little clinical. The public areas were very quiet, and beware - there is no bar, restaurant or room service on Sundays (except breakfast). Breakfast was very good with an excellent choice, but it felt a little like eating in an airport. The hotel has a small spa area - sauna, steam room, and jaccuzi. We were surprised to be charged for this (8 euros each) but the well equipped gym was free. The location is the oddest thing about this hotel. It has been built on the site of the old football ground, so is in the middle of residential blocks of flats. The floor to ceiling wall of windows in our room looked out over people's washing and balconies. There were not many places to eat nearby, but we went to a couple of café/bars used by locals. The city centre is about 15 minutes brisk walk away. We were rather disappointed by Oviedo, but this may have been influenced by the weather, which was not very good during our stay.

Room Tip: The junior suites seem to be twice the size of the standard rooms.

The view and design are outstanding. I secured a room for about sixty euros. For the level of facilities offered and that fact that the hotel is provided with a SPA this is a very good bargain. Internet works well and staff are very cooperative. I will definitely be back.

The hotel is one fortunate to be located within a Calatrava architectural work of art. The amenities are all there and the service is prompt, cordial, and very helpful. The rooms are a bit different than most but have the best lighting and bathroom fixtures. The location is a little off of the tourist and business areas but for that reason it is quiet. There is a large shopping mall within the same building where you can find everything that you might want to purchase. No need to go shopping anywhere else. If sidreria hopping go to calle Gascona, not far away

This hotel is different from any other hotel, especially the exterior. There are plenty of boutique and art hotels nowadays that can have similar rooms to this hotel. but never ever have I seen a hotel building that looks like this one. It is easy to come to think of science fiction movies, and it really looks like some kind of starship that has landed in the middle of this pleasant city.
We had a junior suite and it was very big and comfortable. There was a fridge with complementary water and plenty of space to keep your own bottles, thus avoiding having to be beverages from the expensive room service. Breakfast was also quite expensive, 15 Euros, or 12 if you ordered it the day before. But there are plenty of cafes around, and also a large supermarket in the building.
If weather is bad and you don't feel like going downtown there is a shopping mall in the building. It seems a bit affected by the crisis, though, with quite a few shops being empty.
The rooms was very pleasant, but one of the main attractions, the coloured lights by the bed only worked until we turned them off. When we tried to turn them on again they did not work. We told reception who sent someone up to fix them while we were out. When we returned they worked, but when we turned them off it was again impossible to turn them on. Maybe you must keep them on all the time?
The bathroom was very nice with a shower cubicle and a bathtub with a shower. But the shower cubicle had its door facing inwards, making it very difficult to enter (and probably impossible for persons over average weight).
So why do I give this hotel a 5 with all these remarks? Well, this was one of the more memorable hotel nights we have ever had, so these minor remarks do not change that fact. This is a masterpiece by the famous architect Santiago Calatrava, known for Turning Torso in Malmö, Sweden.
