“Old style Spain”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

Spent a couple of days here last month and really enjoyed it. Located right in the middle of Gijon and reeking of a different age and pace of life. Cool and comfortable rooms and very professional staff. Gijon is a charing place to visit and this hotel will enhance the experience.

Room Tip: Go for a suite

We went there many people because we had a weeding near by Gijón. The thing is that when I did my booking it was almost fully booked and I had to book a kind of superior room just for some more euros. The room was so big and the bathroom was enormous. I liked that there was a big closet to put there all my clothes and there was also inside a large mirror.
The reception staff was so kind and they provide me everything I need.
It is situated in the heart of the city and the price its also OK.

Room Tip: If you have the chance to pay a little bit more for a superior room you will have a really big room...

Like stepping back in time, this four star hotel situated in the heart of the city reeks with nostalgia. I was given a suite comprising bedroom, sitting room and bathroom. The bedroom was quite comfortable with adequate storage space, flat screen t.v. and wifi. The sitting room had two armchairs, a table and a settee. Again with a flat screen t.v. and wifi. The bathroom was all in white marble and included a full length bath and a bidet.
Breakfast consisted of home made pastries and bread, meat and cheese, as well as freshly pressed orange juice.
A real gem and all for the modest sum of 60€ a night.
Although there may well be other comfortable hotels in the town this one cannot be be beaten for situation and value.

Booked this hotel via booking.com. Mainly on price/central location and positive reviews on TA. When I see negative reviews stating-hieght of shower or size of lift I wonder about our future on this planet. This place fulfilled every hope and more-it was like staying in an aristocrats patrimonial home. The place is rich with latter day classic touches like oak panelling, marble floors, brass bannisters etc. Our room had 3 rooms, a good sized double room with a very comfortable double bed, 32 inch flatscreen TV, and oak wardrobes built in and made by a craftman cabinet maker, a delightful bathroom with bath & shower, bidet etc, and another room with easy chairs, coffee table, writing desk, mini-bar and another flatscreen TV. There were lovely rugs scattered over a solid wood floor. The breakfasts were filling and fresh, the service accomodating and helpful and the overall price was very, very reasonable. We stayed a week and during that time met more staff that guests. The hotel like many others in Spain is feeling the pain of the economic meltdown but the Hernan Cortes deserves to flourish. Do not hesitate to book!

Room Tip: All room are well insulated and well equipped. We stayed in a 'superior double'

I have asked for a room with a good view and I got that. Comfortable bed, however I did not get or been ask if I prefer twin or double room as my reservation via Booking.com gave me the option to choose at check in. Never mind the twin bed room. The furnishing is ok-ish, nothing fancy, but functional, bathroom nice, separate space with desk, so you could work comfortably on your laptop if you have one.

Breakfast was very nice, I have never understood how the breakfast price is calculated as I always paid less despite eating more than my partner…

Reception staff very helpful, willing to help organising day trips to Picos de Europa.

Would stay there again if in Gijon.

No complaints about the service, but the hotel is past its best.
It's central location means easy access to the sites of Gijon, but it is hard to find by car, winding down a maze of narrow one-way streets. There is only one dropping off bay outside the hotel so we had to park on the other side of the street from hotel and some idiot reversed up the hill, the wrong way up the one way street and bashed into us - which was very expensive. Not the hotel's fault, I'll grant you - but be aware that this hotel is not an easy option if you are travelling by car. Parking is in an underground public public car park about 100m away.
Other downsides, the hotel has no restaurant except in the casino next door which is open to the public and very busy. This meant we had to wander round town to find somewhere to eat.
The bathroom was also weird in that it had a ventilation duct which meant that you could very clearly hear what was happening in at least two other adjacent bathrooms - never experienced this before.
The only positive thing I can say about the room is that the aircon worked.

We stayed at room 709 which was at the backsidem very quiet en left nearly nothing to be desired. Windows are soundproof, airco is quiet, drinks from the minibar cost next to nothing. Splendid bathroom with two basins. Beds could be a bit softer, though. Some noisy clientele late at night, maybe because of the vicinity of the casino.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms at the top floor (10th). They can be hot and some have noisy airco.
