“Better than the alps”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 20, 2013 via mobile

Had an amazing day driving a circular journey through the peaks. Spectacular views. New safe roads and friendly pit stops for food. Took small detour to funicular and well worth it. Expensive but worth the long journey to the remote village and walks. This area is a hidden gem.

“Stunning scenery if you get a sunny day, great for a hike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 6, 2013

If you get luck with the weather, head for the two lakes above Covadonga. It's a 12km drive above the town and if the sun is out it will almost certainly be busy (and a whole new set of rules about access apply during the summer) but the views across the snowclad Picos are stunning.
But here's the bit you have to do. Take your hiking boots and a picnic, and get more than 400 metres from the car parks. 99% don't! Even for families with fairly young children, provided you all have good footwear, there is a great 5km clockwise circuit of the lakes to be done, starting along the right hand side of the upper lake, going round the back of the peak between the two lakes, and returning along the right side of the lower lake. Take all the normal mountain precautions, Google around for a map of the path (they can be found), and allow around three hours to do the circuit - it is a scramble over rocks for a while. But the (sporty) six year old boy in our party did it with energy to spare. For adult parties there are bigger walks to be had.

“Picos the Europa - Green Magic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

This is a very interesting and intimate part of the Northern of Spain. Like time stood still for a long time.
The high mountains are so close to the sea that the region embraces you like a hidden dream-spot, where behind every corner a new surprise is waiting for you.
The coastline is beautiful with secluded beaches and the mountains are easy to reach that you can visit them both in one day.
And then I haven't even started about the food, fresh catch of the day or the juicy steaks from the free roaming cows, and wonderful handmade cheeses.

The only downside for me is that it can RAIN big time!

“Breathtakingly beautiful – should be top attraction in Asturias”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

We spent several days exploring the Picos de Europa in September 2012 and found the scenery among the most striking we have ever seen. The roads are also incredibly good which makes journeys easy and far less onerous than might be the case in the UK. There are lots of spectacular sculptures at viewpoints and these are all worth stopping for if you can park safely. Clearly, we were very lucky that we met few cars on our trip and enjoyed happy motoring in our own car with no hassle at all from the locals.

There are so many wonderful places to visit that it is impossible to mention them all but going up on the cable car from Fuente de is a must, as is the walk along the Cares Gorge. There's a mountain road from Espinama to Sotres which is passable with care and respect for walkers using the same path.

This area deserves far more visitors and could probably cope with them very well. There are plenty of good hotels, especially the paradors, and restaurants. Cannot understand why most people head for the Costas when there is so much wild and exciting countryside to explore.
