We booked this hotel after a lot of thorough research on Tripadvisor and other trusted review sites. Our break was a four day one via ebookers using their app discount codes which saved 20% off the usual hotel price and we booked breakfast in a double superior room. When we arrived, we immediately found the staff to be as wonderful as previous reviewers said they were and were shown our room. Unfortunately, we discovered that there are two grades of superior double rooms, one with a lounge area and one without. We were given the latter. We were also right next to the lift shaft in room 15 (avoid) so insisted on being moved the following morning. This was done without fuss into a similar sized room above 25 but was much, much quieter.
The El Rey Moro isn't a 3 star hotel masquerading as anything other than what it is, a nice, comfortable boutique hotel tucked away in a quiet side street but only minutes away from the centre of Sevilla. For that purpose, it rates highly and I would thoroughly recommend it to you. The pleasantness of hotel staff can make or break a holiday and so we were very impressed with all the staff, particularly Aziz and Naome on the front desk who were always very polite and helpful.
The hotel offers clean, medium grade facilities to ensure a comfortable break and free mineral water which is a nice touch in the heat of Sevilla. They also offer free bicycle hire and a useable weighing scale for baggage which is essential for travellers arriving via budget airlines, so thumbs up on that front. Another bonus is a rooftop sunbathing area with a hot tub with views of the Cathedral.
If you are looking for five star luxury or plain, bog standard white or magnolia painted rooms, you will not find them here. What you will find however is a comfortable, clean hotel with helpful staff in a great location. The only criticism I have and this is really subjective (aside from the patchy wi-fi connection) was that the breakfast could have been a little better. By that, I mean that the breads and rolls and pastries were a little plain and the hot food, bacon, sausages and eggs could have been a little better prepared and available at all times, not just some times during the breakfast service. The bacon could have been smore crispy and the sausages more thoroughly cooked - but as I said, that is subjective. Also, I believe that breakfast should be available for early leavers like ourselves who had to catch an earlier flight from either 7am or 7:30am instead of 8:00am - and that coffee should be on tap via a machine or more staff be available than the one server whom you had to order individual cups of coffee from. As she was often busy doing other things, this meant less attentiveness towards guests' needs. Other than that, in all honesty, breakfast at the El Rey Moro is adequately average and fills a gap but it is not earth shatteringly brilliant when, with a few tweaks and an extra member of serving staff, it could be so much better. Having stayed in many European three star hotels and as a food writer, I speak with some degree of experience on the subject of breakfast offerings so honestly and impartially mark the El Rey Moro's breakfast as only 6/10.
To conclude, if you want a great stay in a comfortable hotel near all the action that won't break the bank then El Rey Moro will provide exactly that. I intend to visit Sevilla again because it was so beautiful and would not have any hesitation in rebooking with this lovely hotel again as the whole experience was generally very positive.
