“Beautiful Architecture”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 28, 2011

The building that is used by the University is called the Tabacalera, because it was used in the past as the tobacco factory. It was built between 1728 and 1771. This was the site that was used in the novel Carmen by Merimee. There have been many movies based on that opera and they all contain the scene where Carmen fights another woman in the factory while they are assembling the cigars.

One can wander around the huge building and see hundreds of young students walking around.

“Go Inside the Building”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2010

The University is not very far from the cathedral so it is worth the quick walk. I knew someone that studied here from the USA so it was very interesting to see where the classrooms are and the surrounding environment.

“Quaint and Wonderful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2006

I went to a conference for teachers at the University of Seville in March 2005. The University itself is beautiful but drafty that time of year - not well heated; take a jacket or sweater. You can see the history of Carmen's "tobacco factory" if you look closely at the walls and architecture. There is a small bar on the premises for a drink or snack- the prices are very low! When I went they were celebrating the 500th year of the university. But this is just a small stop on your way... a short walk across the street will take you to the Plaza Espana where you can go on a carriage ride to view the city. I stayed in the Melia Lebreros, but you may want to stay in a place closer to the Gualalquivir. Don't miss a paella lunch or dinner at the Taberna del Alabadero in the city... you can walk from the University, but you can also take a taxi if you wish.
Seville is great... go there to get your castenets clicking.
