This is a small hotel in a historic large house in the Albaycin neighborhood in the old area of Granada. It is located at the bottom of the hill that the Alhambra is on, so is very handy to the premier sightseeing site. (We spent a whole day at the Alhambra) The location
is very interesting and appealing, on a very narrow street across from
the River Darro (we'd call it a creek here), and a block or two away from a very pleasant Plaza Nueva with several restaurants, bars, and sidewalk cafes. We had a great time just wandering around the neighborhood. Parking, or on some days just driving, to the hotel is impossible. The hotel has a deal with a couple of city parking garages
that reduces the price somewhat. Dump your car there.

We traveled with our daughter, son-in-law, and 8-year old grandaughter
-- their room, up a metal spiral staircase, was not for the stair-challenged. However, it may have been the only one that could accommodate an extra bed. It also had no windows, which was just a bit claustrophobic. Our room, while not real large was quite adequate
and clean and comfortable. The room decor was minimal, but we aren't fussy about that.

Staff was very helpful and accommodating and all spoke some English. The only downside was that breakfast was not included -- you could get it at the bar downstairs, but it was pretty forgettable.

All in all we liked this hotel very much.

We got married in Granada last month and used this hotel as our base for families and friends. The hotel was generally ok if a little over priced (no breakfast included) with stressed staff when full. What was really disappointing was discovering, whilst on honeymoon, that the Hotel Zaguan del Darro had kept and used my credit card details, charging me for a room that somebody from my party had never checked into. After some investigation it turns out this room was paid for by my mother however, the hotel refuse to pay me back the 133 pounds (159 euros) they deducted illegally from my card after I had left Spain to go on honeymoon (i.e I was not there to authorise the payment by entering my pin) I´m now taking the matter up with my bank so if I had any advice..... avoid paying with card for your stay at this hotel.

Historic hotel located in the old Moorish town, just in the outskirts of the Alhambra. Rooms were clean and middle sized and the property has a nice main hall where you can relax. Our room was at the top floor overlooking the backstreet and to the roofs of Albazyn so we did not suffer from noise. Also I have read that some trip advisors mention about the electricity system that needs a card to be inserted to work and you have to leave that card to the reception along with your key. We also did the same and left our key in the reception whwn we went out and we found a seperate card in our room afterwards (left by the cleaning lady we thought) so that we could keep the room cool when we are out. The people at the reception were very friendly and helpful. The only off was that the WIFI was only available in the reception area-not in the rooms. The hotel also has a cervezeria downstairs. We loved our stay there.

|'ve stayed at Hotel Zaguan twice and had OK experiences both times. The first time, I was in room 101 on the same floor as the lobby. I had a wonderful view of the Alhambra and the room was really spacious and clean. My only criticism of this room is that it was pretty noisy from both the sound of the cars going by and the bar downstairs (though this was turned off reasonably early).

The second time around I was in room 205 with my parents (so a double room with an extra rather uncomfortable bed..) and I had a much worse experience. The room was on the other side of the hotel (away from the Alhambra) and right above the reception desk. It was basically like sleeping in the lobby. We could hear the people at reception turning the pages of the books they were reading, the lady next door unzipping her luggage, and every time the phone rang downstairs we were woken up (happened about 2-3 times). We could also hear drunken teenagers staggering back to the youth hostels across the Plaza Nueva.

On a positive note, the hotel is beautifully decorated and is in a great central location. The staff is friendly (and several among them English speaking), and the restaurant downstairs is a great place for a late night drink or morning coffee.

For the price and location, Zaguan is good.. But if you're looking for a good, quiet night's sleep make sure you ask for a quiet room or look elsewhere.

First impressions count: my wife and I arrived late evening by taxi from Granada airport - hotel entrance on very narrow street 1 car width. Tip: have small euros in change for tipping cabbie as he won't want to hang around too long with a stream of cars tooting their horns behind him as you unload baggage. Flight of steep stairs to reception lobby - no help whatsoever from male receptionist who watched me twice (I have muscular dystrophy) struggle up with baggage - very surly. The room: Ok for 1 night, maybe 2 but not any longer - I forget number and name but is the one with bathroom off down slippy steps (no handrails) with a sloping roof (forget trying to stand erect if you're over 6ft tall) and flimsy curtain separating it from bedroom area for privacy; velux window blind not sufficient for privacy; no bidet; jacuzzi bath waste of time if you are water-saving conscious. Small bedroom area - little space for clothes/to move around; has small TV on wall mount (watch your head!); has view (!) of a bit of Alhambra from below - not terribly exciting. Bed is standard double. Bed linen not changed for a week (we had booked for 2 weeks attending a spanish language school), room cleaning not as I would expect. Thin walls separate rooms - interesting noises! On the plus side - the female receptionists were lovely and helpful, the room has a fridge, the bar at street level has friendly staff and tapas/music are good; there is a lift inside the hotel which can go to street level/bar if the receptionist gets a key. The city is fabulous and the hotel is well-placed to wander around the Albaicin.
