We stayed at the Carmen del Cobertizo for 3 days in May. We found the staff very welcoming and attentive and immediately felt comfortable and at home.

We booked the Alhambra suite and, although the view of the Palace was excellent, I do have to say that I did not think it was worth the price we paid for it. The bathroom was quite dark and poky and the terrace was shared with another adjoining suite which meant that curtains had to be drawn for privacy which rather negated the pleasure of being able to see the Alhambra illuminated at night. The terrace was without shade (in fact it was simply a roof top space) and it was too hot to sit out during the day so, for us, it was rather a pointless expense. The room itself was lovely and beautifully furnished. Breakfast was expensive for what it was but good. Always croissants and toast, tomatoes, fresh white cheese with honey and sultanas, a plate of prepared fruit and eggs if required.
We did miss the fact that there was no bar as it would have been nice to sit and have a drinkin the garden in the evening before going out. However, soft drinks were available upon request and our hostess did offer a glass of wine on our return one evening. The Carmen is perfectly placed for sightseeing and it was easy to visit both the Palace and the old quarter from there. It was very quiet and peaceful and we did feel that the our hosts had created a peaceful oasis in the heart of a hot and busy city.

I was looking for somewhere special to take my mother for her birthday and to be quite honest we could not have found a better place to stay. The hotel is beautiful and peaceful and the owner and staff are just the nicest, friendliest and most helpful people you could ever find. We booked the Alhambra Suite and while it was probably a lot more expensive than other hotels in Granada it was well worth the money. We would definitely stay there again if we return to Granada. Everything was in walking distance and it was a truly memorable and peaceful break.

  • Liked — Beautiful old property that is lovingly cared for - clean, warm and welcoming.
  • Disliked — Too many stairs!

Really does feel more like a home than a hotel. The owner and her husband are incredibly welcoming - nothing is too much trouble. As other reviewers have already noted, the manager Ana is one of the most charming and helpful people you could ever hope to meet.

The view from the roof terrace is fantastic. We booked the suite and picture windows run the full length of the room, looking out onto the terrace and the Alhambra. Spending the cocktail hour watching one of the world's most beautiful buildings change colour as the sun sets and the moon rises was priceless. We were given the keys to the terrace to ensure our privacy and if you book the suite make sure you ask for this.

I disagree with reviewers who said the continental breakfast was not worth it. Yes, service was occasionally a little disorganised, but always friendly and eager to please - ask and ye shall receive! Take your breakfast outside and eat in the garden if you want... We didn't take the breakfast every day because we like to ring the changes when on holiday, but also there was usually too much on offer. With cereals, fresh juice, yoghurt, breads, croissants, cakes, cheeses, cold meats and fresh fruit available we sometimes had to skip lunch. Make sure you try the black tomatoes if on offer.

It is in a truly outstanding location in foothills of Albayzin. One street back from the main bus and walking route up the hill it is amazingly quiet. Dozens of excellent restaurants and tapas bars are only 5 mins away if you stroll down to Plaza Nueva or make a short climb upwards along the river side. Please have a calicasas and free tapa for me at Bodegas Castaneda.

Recommendation - walk or take the bus up to Plaza San Miguel bajo and dine outside at one of the good value restaurants on the square (esp. el Aji). It really feels like a small village and it's brilliant watching the neighbourhood pass by.

Can't wait to return to this fine hotel.

  • Liked — Atmosphere, views, service.
  • Disliked — Struggling... Oh yes! No minibar in suite, but staff happy to supply ice whenever.
  • Tips/Secrets: — Ask Ana and owners for recommendations and advice.

While we didn't have an amazing time in Granada (aside from the Alhambra, there's nothing to write home about compared to Cordoba or Ronda), Carmen Del Cobertizo was an oasis of calm. As mentioned before, Ana is terrific, especially given the fact that the owners (who live in the house) don't speak English. The place isn't cheap, but the atmosphere is great.

We had a great experience at the Carmen. First off, we were greeted by Ana, the manager. She is absolutely the nicest and most gracious host imaginable. She greeted us with water and a glass of wine, and was always available for restaurant recommendations. She also speaks fluent english, which helped since our spanish really needs improvement!

The hotel is very unique. It is in a traditional home, and the owners actually still live on the top floor. We met them twice, and they were also very gracious. One night we stayed in and had a bottle of wine in the front yard, and they brought over snacks for us.

The rooms are all very unique. We absolutely loved the decor, very cozy.

The location can't be beat. You can see the Alahambra from the roof!

The bad:

We had no hot water one day. Because this is more of a home and not a hotel, they were not equipped to deal with this. The water was freezing all day, not even lukewarm. This was a bit annoying, but its one of the expected problems with a small inn in Spain.

Breakfast is not worth it. The continental is too expensive, you're better of going down the road and stopping at one of the many cafes. Although they had a full english breakfast, the inn is short-staffed and weren't equipped to serve more than 4 at a time. We didn't have an opportunity to try it, as there was a family always up and at breakfast before us. The wait would have been too long. This really wasnt a problem though, as we grabbed a snack and coffee just down the road.

Overall one of our best stays. Highly recommended
