It’s hard to imagine a hotel more charming than Casa Morisca, located at the base of the Alhambra and just a 10-minute walk from the summit. Stepping inside the hotel’s intricately carved wooden doors is like stepping into 15th century Moorish Spain, with an open courtyard, trickling fountain and Oriental rugs. Our cozy split-level room on the hotel’s top floor featured a tranquil blue interior, rustic dark wood furniture, tiled bathroom, and best of all, breathtaking views of the Alhambra. It was tempting to lounge in the hotel all day, but the location – bordering the lovely narrow streets and whitewashed buildings of the Albaicin – made sight-seeing convenient.

Hotel amenities include free parking, mini-bar, English language news channels and limited room service (drinks and plates of ham and cheese). Breakfast is served in a stone cellar decorated with antique farming implements (or something similarly rustic and quaint), and at 12 EUR per person is a good value, with fruit, hard-boiled eggs, ham, cheese, breads and yogurt. In addition to the breakfast room, the hotel offers a small reading nook with newspapers.

Service was professional but perfunctory, as I found to be the case throughout Spain. The hotel booked Alhambra tickets for us in advance, which saved about two hours of waiting in line.

One note of caution: If you are driving to the hotel, map your route on-line, as something is lost in translation in the hotel’s directions.

Overall, my stay at Casa Morisca was one of my favorite hotel experiences. I’ll definitely return.

This is a small Moorish hotel in the medieval Albaicin barrio of the city, which has been painstakingly reconstructed. The parking, a problem in this neighborhood, is in front of the hotel, and free. The breakfast room is small, but the meal is quite good. The hotel is close to all the main attractions. The staff was helpful, but often had misinformation as to when various attractions were open. Reasonable price for a quality hotel.

  • Disliked — Outdated attraction information at the front desk

This hotel is gorgeous. After falling in love with the Alhambra and the Alcazar, staying at this place made me feel like I had my own mini palace. The door to the main entrance is just super cool, and the key to your room is neat too. It is full of ambiance, cool calm, and makes you feel so relaxed when you enter.

The size of our room was comparable to other hotels we've stayed in Europe (i.e. too small for American taste). Architecturally, the room was very interesting, with a high, beamed ceiling, wide, heavy wooden windows, and tiled floor. The tiling in the bath was pretty, and had all the modern conveniences. It is, overall, a very romantic setting, if your idea of romance involves old wooden things, historical ambiance, and persian carpets.

Now for the criticisms. It is so expensive for what you get. Granted it is amazing, but gosh, 200+us a night can quickly render the travel budget. The bed was terrible. We were used to two twins pushed together by this point, but they were so hard - after walking and sightseeing all day, this was not what I needed. There was occasional-to-frequent unpleasant odor rising up from the shower drain. At night, there were freqent knocking sounds coming from the plumbing.

If the price were a bit lower, the issues with this place could easily be outweighed by its pure indulgent sensuality. There needs to be more balance in this respect that keeps this hotel from being highly recommended. If you don't care about how you spend your money, want something that is undoubtedly very special, and can overlook "the small stuff," then you won't be disappointed.

Wonderful relaxing atmosphere at Casa Morisca, especially in the courtyard as you enter the Hotel. Room was a good size & very clean. We had hoped for a view of the Alhambra, but we did get an outward facing room. If you want a view of the palace then you need to request one of the superior rooms. Staff on reception really helpful & friendly. The only real downside was the breakfast - which at 12 Euro was a tad expensive given what was on offer - also there was no hint of service as we just went in & helped ourselves & nobody appeared to offer any assistance. Only a minor niggle really - best just to eat in town.

We probably would have loved this Hotel in the Summer but sadly, in the Winter this is not very comfortable.

The main problem is that the rooms are very cold and we ended up buying hotwater bottles just to keep warm.

The rooms are heated by fan heaters which simply do not keep the hotel warm.

There were groups of shivering tourists in all the public spaces.

Staff let us down by not giving us the room promised. We didn't feel that they treated us honestly in that. Left a bad feeling.

There were renovations going on out the back (not the hotel) which also made the room uncomfortable.

Food was hard to find near the hotel as although there are plenty of bars they get very full/cramped.
