Our family (parents and 3 boys at 7, 8 and 13) from Norway stayed in these caves 3 nights in July 2008. It was a wonderful experience! The cave itself was cool and quiet in the midsummer heat. Outside, it had shaded area (beneath grape leaves) where we could sit quietly and read or just listen to the local sounds (birds, people singing while hanging up their laundry or music from local restaurants in the evening). The children had fun calling each other "cavemen" and relaxed inside. The cave had two bedrooms and a coach in the living room. It also had a kitchen and a fireplace. It was the best part of our 17.days journey in Spain.

  • Liked — The area, being close to the city and still so quietr, the small birds in the grapeleves above, the music in the evening and the short stroll to look at an amazing Alhambra view at night.
  • Disliked — the smell of smoke from the fireplace at arrival (have a son with astma, but he manged OK)

Pros: Unusual caves hotel, each cave has one or two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and living room. Beautiful patio in front of the unit door - excellent for a breakfast. Although the place is simple it's very covenient, clean and nice.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful surroundings - very special and romantic Sacromonte district, with many restaurants, flamenco tablaos and wonderful view to Alhambra complex.

Cons: No TV and no phones in the caves. Impossible to reach by car - we left our car at the bus station downhill, from there it's about 5 mins of climbing uphill to the hotel. Definitely not for disabled or senior people. If you have heavy luggage you'll need to carry it by hand from the car up to the hotel (we left ours in the car...) It's advisable to ask the hotel owners for the detailed driving directions - the streets of the old Granada are narrow and your car might be wider than some of the streets on the city map!

Bottom line: if you don't mind climbing this is a very nice, unusual and non-expensive hotel in a beautiful city of Granada.

  • Liked — Nice place, friendly staff
  • Disliked — Difficult to reach, especially for physically challenged people
  • Tips/Secrets: — Ask the hotel owners for the detailed driving directions

We took a chance and booked this cave hotel in the gypsy quarter of Granada and it was great! One of our cheaper accomodation choices at 90 euros per night, we got two good-sized bedrooms (one with two single beds, one with one double bed), a kitchen, bathroom with shower and living room. There was also a lovely patio table out front. Our children (11 and 7) loved this cave house as it was large and unique. It was mercifully cool in June (the adults did find if a bit damp). The beds were comfortable and there was a good view of the Alhambra close by. You have to park down the hill and carry your suitcases up a ways. There are about 7 other rooms and a balcony above with a hammock and a few chairs.

The proprietor spoke a bit of English.

We stayed at these caves between the 24th and 26th April. The lady who looks after the caves was lovely, very helpful and informative. The cave itself was lovely, a good size with all the amenities you require and a shop not too far away for your supplies. It was equipped with air con despite the fact that it was naturally cool anyway. The terrace above the caves was a real sun trap and boasted some lovely views, most of all it was very quiet and peaceful. We felt the location was perfect about 15 mins downhill walk to the city centre and slightly more for the Alhambra the only downside is it is uphill all the way back again so you do need to be fairly fit, it is well worth it though. Can't recommend it enough.
