BLOODY AWFUL! In fact BLOODY BLOODY AWFUL!!
We Have just returned from a stay at the Hotel America, Alhambra.
What an absolute nightmare!!!
I booked via the hotel`s owner both by phone and email. I got confirmation of the booking, and replied again with our room requirements. two adults and two children per room. I even emailed before leaving for the hotel, to make sure that our rooms would be set up, knowing we were arriving later than usual - 9pm, and the kids would have dozed off.
On arrival, we were greeted perfectly by Marion, at front desk. it was not until she had taken our passport details and we had signed some paperwork, that she told us we did not in fact have the rooms we had booked. The lack of view and top floor aspect (with sleeping kids & no lift) was not hard to deal with.
But one room had a tiny 4ft6" double bed (for 2 adults and 2 kids) and the other room had two singles (for 2 adults, 1 kid and baby) and no cot as resquested.
after almost 30mins of arguing and crying children (plus it was 40degress and the hotel has no air con at front desk,) I walked over to the parador hotel (looked lovely) and reserved two rooms.
On walking back to the America, our fellow guests had discoverd that the deposit taken from my card, was actually the full amount! and refunds were not available.
To my utter astonishment, we were then offered a shoe box sized room, which was so tiny, the luggage would have to be left outside (not kidding) and this room was almost entirely filled with the small bed.
Marion`s suggestion was that we left the kids in this room (3 and 4 years) on their own, and we slept in the other room on the floor below!!!!!
And after the look of utter amazement was still lifting from my face, The deluded spaniard, then demanded it would be an additional 65euros, not inc breakfast.
It was on suggesting she phoned her boss, whom we had made the booking, and with the threat of us really jumping up and down
that she made her offer of reducing the fee for the shoe box room to only 5euros but we still had to pay another 16euros for breakfast, with that we walked out! However, before the last leg had stomped through the door, she called us back and offered us a larger room. she took us up to a sizeable room, which she said the sofa could be used for the children (even though it was not a pull out bed) but the other party of four would still have to share a 4ft6" bed. With the prospect of having paid 250 euros all ready, and the parador wanting another 760euros, for one night, we had little option, we had also been at reception now for over an hour. So we slept with one child between us, and two hanging onto the sofa for dear life, the other unfortunate couple, top to toe with baby in the middle.
At breakfast, we asked for some orange juice, surely a normal accompanyment to the Andulsian Desayuno? however this was 3euros extra, per glass. And the way in which the server made us sign and print for the extra whilst eating, made me feel the owner was possibly a former traffic warden.
We checked out, and was told that they had refunded my card the full amount!! I was pleased, until the owner then demanded payment in cash, because she had split the bills to divide the extras fairly between us, which had resulted in her producing the new invoices. I was confused, especially as I was told only hours before that the machine could not refund, and we were happy paying altogether.
As I had no cash on me, and my wife had given our credit card to the Alhambra ticket desk as a deposit for the audiophone hire, we were stuffed, so I suggested coming back after the Alhambra tour.
The owner then set about trying to offer us an affiliated tour guide for 200 euros, (had the sun been too much for her at some stage?) we declined, and had our luggage taken to a room, and locked in for security (who`s?) whilst we went to the Alhambra.
Sadly, tempers were running high, and before even embarking on our tour, we gave our newly purchased tickets to some students queing at the ticket office, and went to find the San Anton Hotel(where we had stayed the year before) and spent the day sitting by the pool.
The really sad thing about this whole episode, was that we had stopped of at the Hotel America the year before and had a quick beer in the courtyard, and I promised we would come back and stay. I had even mentioned it as a psoible highlight of our 10 day tour around granada and the coast. How wrong I was.
Would I reccomend the Hotel America? Yes, to Basil Fawlty.!
