We booked Hotel San Gabriel before reading some of the reviews and then felt a little nervous. There was no need. This Hotel suits its price range. Yes you do need a car, but as we had hired a car with the express intension of seeing as much of the area as possible in four days, this did not pose a problem.
The room was light, spacious and very clean. We had a family room shared between two adults and a sixteen year old, but didn't feel on top of one another and the bathroom doubled as a dressingroom. We were told that people staying a min. of a week have priority over balcony rooms, but we did get a room with a great view. Do e-mail and ask in advance.
We didn't use the pool, but it looked clean and inviting. We did enjoy sitting out there in the evenings and the blessed peace and quiet of the hotel and its surroundings.
We booked through skybargains and paid £200 for three adults, three nights, half baord. Great if, like us, you want some where clean, comfortable and cheap. Don't do this if you are a food lover. The food was adequate to fill a hungry belly, but choice was restricted.
The staff on the desk spoke just enough English to get by, but the waiters couldn't cope with our orders without a lot of mime work. This led to some confusion. [The menu was bi-lingual, thankfully.]
Two minutes drive down the steep and winding road ( be careful at night ) there is adequate roadside parking to begin exploring the Albaicin. There is a restaurant/bar next to this point which has fast, furious and exciting flamenco every evening. Bit pricey and the free drink was more like water, but worth blowing your last euros on.
Would we stay here again? Yes, but would probably eat out in the evenings. There looked like some really great eateries in the Albaicin.

  • Liked — clean, comfortable,quiet and cheap
  • Disliked — claims to bi-lingual staff not true in the restaurant

The hotel is told to be in Granada which is a lie. Indeed the Granada city limit sign is at about 1.5 km from the hotel which takes about 20 mn to walk down hill. I will only advise to walk at day light only as you'll be walking on the side of a mountain road without any sidewalks and protection for pedestrian. At night a taxi fare from the city centre costs € 5 to 7.
We read that the pool was to be lovely as per tripadvisor.com. Against be aware that time passed by and it is not the case as at the 29th of september: the bottom of the pool has gone off... It was not very inviting.
Now the room: Pink curtains matching pink bed covers. How pretty !!!! First night with no sleep the beds were so bad (room 107); we go another room for the second night, at list a double bed for honeymooners (which we were).
Do not mind the very moody daytime receptionist, eating his gums all day long with mouth wide open. If you can speak spanish he seems to be nicer to deal with than in english.
Well. Avoid the place if you can. And be aware that the Alhambra needs to be booked on line long in advance or queue from 6:30 am to get a ticket on the day.

This hotel is on a hill about 3km from the centre of Granada. It is ideal if you have a car, but the nearest bus stop is at least 1 km away. We had a lovely room with a balcony overlooking the excellent swimming pool, a great asset in the heat of summer. It is possible to drive down the hill and park for free by a bus stop to go into the city where parking is quite expensive

The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful. The restaurant was particularly good. Dishes from the a la carte menu were quite expensive but high quality. The "menu del dia" was exceptional value. Always 3 or more choices of starter and main course, excellent portions and very tasty.

At night the views from the balcony over the city lights were very pleasant. The air conditioning was very effective.

A great hotel to relax in by the pool, but close to the main sights.
