We booked Hotel San Gabriel before reading some of the reviews and then felt a little nervous. There was no need. This Hotel suits its price range. Yes you do need a car, but as we had hired a car with the express intension of seeing as much of the area as possible in four days, this did not pose a problem.
The room was light, spacious and very clean. We had a family room shared between two adults and a sixteen year old, but didn't feel on top of one another and the bathroom doubled as a dressingroom. We were told that people staying a min. of a week have priority over balcony rooms, but we did get a room with a great view. Do e-mail and ask in advance.
We didn't use the pool, but it looked clean and inviting. We did enjoy sitting out there in the evenings and the blessed peace and quiet of the hotel and its surroundings.
We booked through skybargains and paid £200 for three adults, three nights, half baord. Great if, like us, you want some where clean, comfortable and cheap. Don't do this if you are a food lover. The food was adequate to fill a hungry belly, but choice was restricted.
The staff on the desk spoke just enough English to get by, but the waiters couldn't cope with our orders without a lot of mime work. This led to some confusion. [The menu was bi-lingual, thankfully.]
Two minutes drive down the steep and winding road ( be careful at night ) there is adequate roadside parking to begin exploring the Albaicin. There is a restaurant/bar next to this point which has fast, furious and exciting flamenco every evening. Bit pricey and the free drink was more like water, but worth blowing your last euros on.
Would we stay here again? Yes, but would probably eat out in the evenings. There looked like some really great eateries in the Albaicin.
