Stayed at the hotel Carmen for 2 nights early July.found hotel ideal for location, room large although at side of hotel looking over sidestreet + oposite building, but did not go to Granada to sit on hotel balcony.Air-con really good +bathroom replenished every day with plenty toiletries(usual things plus combs/razors etc) + room spotless.
Breakfast was anything you wanted hot + cold.
The best thing in the hotel was the roof terrace with views over the Alahambra plus bar + small swimming pool. very welcoming after day sightseeing in 38deg heat (pool towels from bar).Had a drink up there @ midnight + terrace /Granada lit up.
Favourite tapas bars,,,Bar Manele in corner of Bib-Bib Rambla,,,Castenada + Gran Taberna in Plaza Nueva.

How I wish I had known about this advice site before travelling to Granada last month. As noted by other reviewers, the hotel does not advertise the lack of access to the postage-stamp-sized pool on its website. We specifically booked this hotel in order to have pool facilities, as this was meant to both a sightseeing trip and a relaxing break to celebrate our anniversary.

Not only was the pool closed, but our enquiries as to possible alternatives were met with virtual derision by the unhelpful and, frankly, miserable staff at reception. To add insult to injury, the work going on in the pool area commenced at around 7am each morning, with loud crashes and bangs waking us up prematurely every day.

The room was tatty, nowhere near 4* quality, and featured a shower that left a pool of water all over the floor after every use. The walls were very thin, even the slightest cough from next door could be clearly heard. Ironically, perhaps, staff ignored "Do Not Disturb" cards left on the door.

On enquiring as to how to operate the room safe, the receptionist was downright rude to both my husband and myself, culminating in an almost comical moment when she actually raised her eyes heaven-ward when he dared to correct her on which date we were due to check out.

We attempted to obtain some sort of discount or compensation from the management of the hotel when we checked out and they could not have cared less. Our request was completely ignored, and having written to head office on our return two weeks ago, we still await even an acknowledgement of our complaints.

I stayed last year at the Carmen Hotel and found it to be adequate, the only thing that really made it was the roof terrace bar and pool, it was lovely to come back from sightseeing to have a sunbathe. The reception staff were rude verging on unpleasant and offensive though.

I visited Granada again this week and chose the Carmen again simply for the pool and got there to dicover it was closed for renovations which begs the question why on earth was this not done over the winter, rather than the summer when guests would want to use it? The room was poky and dark but clean. The reception staff were still unpleasant. The breakfast was reasonably good. Funny how the hotel has not put on its website that the pool is closed as I am sure most people like me only stay there for that and overlook the many negative aspects of the hotel just to enjoy the pool. So frankly as the pool is out of use I really wouldn't bother to stay here, mainly to avoid the miserable pair on reception who view guests as a nuisance.

Whilst the welcome from the reception staff was welcoming and very helpful, the hotel does not warrant its four stars. It is very modern and very impersonal, welcoming coach parties and tours. The restaurant and breakfast were satisfactory. The hotel has a roof terrace and swimming pool, which was the main reason we chose it. We were most disappointed by the fact that it did not open until mid June and was undergoing renovation
at the time we visited.

Also note that on the weekend the majority of hotels appear to host a series of functions which make the main reception areas very busy and noisy.
