The Al Hambra in Granada is, so it is claimed, the most visited tourist attraction in Spain. It probably is and is certainly worth a visit. The Hotel of the same name is certainly not.
Lets start with the good points. The entrance lobby is spectacular and the reception staff are great, courteous and helpful. Your car is parked for you. Your luggage is taken to the room. Great! My colleague and I had booked two double rooms at the price of USD167 per night, excluding breakfast. I had stipulated double beds in the booking. You guessed it, they were twins. Back to those helpful guys at reception. Apologies and two rooms with double beds were immediately found. We are on our way down hill.
The rooms were, to say the least, small. Yes they had a double bed, but not a lot of space around them. However clean they were and the bed proved comfortable. Internet connection was available in the room although I could find no details, so I logged on and discovered the charge was 22 Euros per day! I paid up, it worked!
The bathroom was a triumph!! You hit your head on the towel rail if you had a bath, the shower was impossible to control on the temperature front, and the bath still had three inches of water in it ten minutes after I had finished a brief shower. Remember it was USD 167 per night, 197 including breakfast!
Here's a surprise, the Al Hambra Palace Hotel has views all over the place, except, of course, over the Al Hambra! It is a fair walk (up hill) from the entrance to the Al Hambra, so beware if you think you can just wander over to the entrance. You can't!
My best moment came when I went down to meet my colleague in the Lobby at about 2015. There was a queue of people stretching back in to the lobby. I, of course, wondered what was going on! Guess what, they were queuing to get into the dining room which opened at 2030. This in a Four Star Hotel?
Service in the lobby area was, however, superb. A very fine Bombay Saphire and Tonic was brought to me and a very generous measure poured. Later that evening I returned to my room to find the bed had been turned down. Great I thought until I went into the bathroom and found that nothing had been touched. Not even a clean towel for the morning. I was, after all only paying USD167 per night! A call to reception revealed that the Duty Manager was asleep and couldn't be disturbed, the General Manager was unavailable and the guy on reception could not take a message to ask either of them to contact me in the morning! Better still he accused me of failing to put a notice outside my room asking for it to be made up despite the fact that they had succeeded in turning down the bed!
This is a Hotel trading on its name and it's (actually not very good) but assumed location. Take a tip from me, stay at one of the Hotels nearby, they are half the price, cleaner and provide easy access to the Al Hambra. I have enemies who do not deserve this Hotel. Even better stay in the centre of the town, close to a huge selection of restaurants, shopping and night life. If you want (and you should) to visit the Al Hambra, jump on a bus or get a taxi. Avoid the Al Hambra Palace Hotel
