“Tantalisingly interesting - surprisingly so!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 9, 2013

As we had a few days in Granada, we wanted a tour to fill some time. I was a little hesitant but very happily surprised.

Meeting us in town, our guide, Beatriz and driver took us out to local village. We learnt about olive tree cultivation, grove maintenance (a lot more interesting than it sounds), visited a 15th century oil press and then did olive oil taste testing, learning about how to read labels and the 'tricks of the trade' (or how to spot inferior oils).

A great morning or afternoon, with lots to learn and not a dull moment.

Breath-taking views of the Sierra Nevada on the way up too - bonus!

“Great experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2013

We booked this tour based on the favorable reviews on this site and enjoyed every minute of it! Our guide was Beatriz, who was delightful and very knowledgeable about olives and olive oil. We did the 3 hour tour with the additional wine tasting, which was a fun way to learn more about the properties of quality olive oil. This tour was one of the highlights of our trip!

“excellent tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2013

We enjoyed the 4 hour Olive Oil Tour. We were picked up near our lodging in Granada and taken to a lovely small town, Nigüelas, where we learned all we could ever need to know about olives and olive oil. We mainly enjoyed learning about tasting olive oil and the different attributes of olive oil. We were immediately transformed into olive oil "snobs" and now we only want to buy the best. The countryside we saw on the tour was beautiful. The driver and guide were kind and very knowledgeable. We were the only 2 on the tour, as it was off season, but we were glad to be able to ask a lot of questions that we may not have been able to with a full tour. Take the time to go on the tour if you enjoy olives at all. You won't be disappointed.

“Fantastic tour (Though would avoid the 6hr option)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 3, 2013

We were met near our hotel in Granada by our driver Pablo who took us on a lovely drive through the countryside to an olive grove. We were then met by our guide Beatrice who was more enthusiastic than one could ever imagine about olives.

We learnt how olives are grown (including eating one straight from the tree), how olive oil is made and we visited a perfectly preserved olive mill that is hundreds of years old. Then came the tasting. The idea of drinking olive oil directly seems mad, however with good olive oil this is a rather pleasant experience. However bread is also available if you don want to partake in a marathon drinking session!

We also chose the wine tasting option where we tasted two wines and two sherries along with some tapas (and more wonderful bread and olive oil)

After all this, we then went to lunch in a neighbouring village. The three course lunch was quite mediocre (especially compared to what we just had) and not really necessary after all the bread and tapas that we had already consumed.

The trip finished with a nice drive back to Granada through Lecrin Valley with chances to stop for photos (and in our case to eat oranges directly from orange trees)

I fully recommend this tour as it is quite unique, but would suggest taking the 3hr option and spend the money saved in a nice tapas bar in Granada.

We can highly recommend this tour. We did the full day tour with the add on of wine tasting. Our driver Pablo, arrived at the hotel right on time and was a complete gentleman, making the drive to Niguelas very comfortable. He handed us over to the charming Violetta, whose English was excellent and her knowledge of olives and olive oil, seemingly limitless. The tour of the 15th century mill was terrific and we learned so much about olive growing and production through the ages. The tatsing was a revelation and provided a fascinating range of tastes and styles. Lunch at a local restaurant in Durcal was fantastic and probably the best cooked fish we had in Spain - especially the sardines! Palbo took us to a lovely lookout in that town and let us play on the seniors outdoor gym (we needed some exercise after all that great food!) and gaze lovingly at the Sierra Nevada and the hillsides of orange and olive groves. A perfect day! Thanks Violetta and Pablo!
