“All inclusive break”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2014

Had a fantastic Christmas four night break at this hotel last year. Could not fault it. The accommodation, food, ambiance, staff were absolutely fabulous. Will definitely try to book again this year. We went as a couple with two other couples and they all agreed with us that it was a superb hotel.

Room Tip: Seventh floor was good.

We booked this hotel several months before we travelled in mid January on the excellent reports
we had read, however this changed two weeks before we travelled with several reports of the Novovirus doing the rounds. I know this can't be helped but it really put me off. What was supposed to be a nice relaxing break was spoilt by chatting to guests who one by one were absent for a day or two with the dreaded bug. This was not helped by the fact the walls were so thin you could hear every movement from adjacent rooms. We took precautions by taking hand sanitizer and blatantly using this before and after entering the dining room or taking drinks and we didn't encounter any problems.

The hotel is tired and our bath was peeling but we didn't pay top price. The food was good whilst we were there but probably a week was enough. The hotel staff were excellent and we have no concerns with that. I am surprised they are so efficient given the amount of complaints they must have to deal with.

The hotel is in a lovely position which is why we chose it but I doubt we would go again as I would always be thinking about the 'bug'.

Having just returned from this hotel on 23 March we wholeheartedly agree with previous comments relating to sickness / hygiene issues which seem to be literally swept under the carpet in this hotel. We have stayed at this hotel before and are sad to see the deterioration since All Inclusive holidays have been introduced in the last couple of years. During the holiday we were aware that several holidaymakers, as well as the Thomson rep, had suffered bouts of sickness. We tried our best to avoid sickness by adopting scrupulous hand washing and sanitising using our own resources, however, one of us still succumbed to the sickness towards the end of the holiday, which caused great anxiety about being well enough to be able to fly home. On our departure day, whilst waiting for the coach pickup, we spoke with other people who had suffered in the same way and who were aware of others who had suffered too.

The time has come for both Thomson / First Choice and the hotel management, who all have a duty of care to their clients, to take strong, appropriate action to eradicate this problem. This should include highly visible and compulsory hand sanitation on entering the restaurant. A number of other measures need to be introduced within the restaurant, including:
-regularly changing serving spoons etc.
-signs telling customers not to use hands to grab and eat food whist filling their plates from the self service counters
-young children not allowed to approach self service food counters

Regarding use of public toilets and bathrooms, signs should be placed instructing customers to wash their hands properly. On numerous occasions, whilst using the public toilets, we observed very few people actually washing their hands.

We will be writing to Thomson / First Choice about these issues, however we feel that Trip Advisor might provide another spur to action. We know that in the past hotel management have read these reviews and we now urge them to take the appropriate action.

Room Tip: As others have mentioned, the walls are very thin and it is the luck of the draw as to whether you g...

We have just returned from a weeks all inclusive stay at this hotel (16-23 March). Firstly let me say that the hotel is in a good position right on the sea front with easy access to the promenade which runs all the way to Benalmadena. On arrival we were greeted with orange juice and check in was swift and we were pleased to learn that our room was ready for us (we thought it might not be given that it was before 12 noon) The room was on the eighth floor and had a great side sea view, it was quite large and unusually was carpeted throughout (except the bathroom).

We went down to lunch and whilst there was plenty of choice we did notice that the food was not of the standard we had experienced in the previous Riu hotel we stayed at. The wine on offer was passable. We were allocated the second sitting for dinner which was Ok for us as the first was too early for us to eat. You are allocated a table for dinner that you must keep for your entire stay, the tables are very close together so much so that with the exception of a gap of no more than about four inches maximum you are in effect sharing a table with two other people who are complete strangers. Much is made of the difficulty in getting space in the lounge to watch the entertainment if you are on second sitting, whilst to be honest the entertainment was not really our cup of tea and we preferred to go out for a couple of drinks outside the hotel we did remark that we would have found it difficult to stay in the room very long anyway as the room was very hot and stuffy!.

We used the gym most days which was small and had a reasonable amount of equipment but some of it badly needed servicing, it was also just off the indoor pool and did not have the air conditioning switched on which meant you got hot in a very short time whilst using it. Unfortunately the holiday took a turn for the worst on the Wednesday (we only arrived Sunday) when I was violently ill with what I assume to be food poisoning given the speed at which it came on, my husband whilst not quite as bad also had a very upset stomach. Given that the only food up to that point that we had eaten had been in the hotel I can only think that it was something we had there. We had seen earlier reviews commenting on a sickness bug but thought that this may be a one off at that particular time. The evening after we had been ill we knew that we needed to try to eat something and whilst being nervous had some soup and then thought we would try a small piece of beef steak and vegetables. Given that the pieces of steak were very thin (approximately 3 mm thick) I assumed that they would be safe to eat as they surely must be well cooked. I assumed correctly for my piece but on cutting into his my husband’s plate was covered with blood as the piece of meat was still raw in the middle – not what you want having been so ill!

Following this we had no faith in eating there other than having toast for breakfast as this was something we had full control over and even though we were all inclusive we ate out for lunch and dinner for the rest of the trip. On our last evening we were making our way past the windows of the restaurant which was closed between the first and second sitting for relaying tables when we saw that one of the wait staff was setting tables with a white surgical mask covering her nose and mouth – not sure if she was protecting herself or the customers but it was a very worrying sight and something I have never seen before in our many years of travel!

On waiting for the return coach to the airport we overheard conversations going on around us which indicated that we were not the only ones to have been ill and on arriving home noticed there was a review posted around the time we arrived commenting on illness and indeed a new review posted today speaks about the numbers of people falling ill recently, perhaps we two can add to the 30 people mentioned in that review as we did not discuss our illness with anyone at the time. As any of my previous reviews will testify we rarely give a negative review but felt that we needed to be honest in our views on this hotel. We would certainly return to the Costa del Sol as the weather etc was really good but given the experience we had here would not consider returning to this hotel.

We have also just returned from a holiday at this hotel and unfortunately were victims of the "Torre Trots".
There was (as said previously) no sign of any sanitation sprays and while at first we thought we were sole sufferers, just about everyone we spoke to had either been ,or knew someone that had suffered.
The hotel itself is really quite clean looking and the staff could not be more pleasant or helpful, but the overriding memory is not a pleasant one.

Have just got back from a weeks stay at the Belplaya and can honestly say that if this is a 4 star hotel then there is something seriously wrong with the grading system. The bedrooms are "hollow" which allows to hear every little noise from your adjoining neigbours including them going to the loo, the food and quality of it is no better than you would have at a BBQ and the decor although very "clean in apperance is very outdated. Now to the "hiding / ignoring a serious health issue", whilst we were there at least 30 people came down with a stomach problem including myself. There seems to be no hygiene policy in place with regard to restaurant, bars and toilets and not once did I see a sanitation gel dispenser in any of the public areas. Until Riu grasp the issue and deal with it in a professional manner I would avoid this hotel for the forseeable future. One positive note, the staff are very friendly.

This hotel was supposed to be all inclusive 4 star accommodation however although the room was clean, there was no service at all and no facilities in the room. You have to negotiate the bar to get your bottle of water, there wasn't even a bottle supplied to start us off. When i rang for room service because my father was ill and i didn't want to leave him or my elderly mother I was told there wasn't any room service i had to help myself downstairs!!
My father was only in the hotel for half an hour, my mother and i only had dinner there twice, i've never heard of all inclusive which made you wait for a dinner sitting in order to eat. the food was distinctley average and cold, plates where cold, no service there either and supplies of glasses and food where not kept up so that there was little choice if you came in late to the sitting. Regarding the rooms - No slip mat or extractor fan in bathroom, Plastic shower curtain which sucked into you when the showe was on. No airconditioning, they promised to fx it but it never worked properly. The ceiling fan was noisy, as already mentioned no tea making facilities. You had to run the gauntlet of the smoke filled veranda to get to the hot water erns.
Although i asked for a doctor for my father as soon as we arrived at the hotel, no one offered help, my mother and i practically carried him to our rooms. No effort was made to get our luggage upstairs for us, I had to deal with 3 cases by myself.
The only 3 pluses to this holiday where Carmen? on reception, the angel tour rep called Courtney from thompsons who went above and beyond the call of duty helping us, and the insurance company who thankfully moved my mum and i to another proper 4 star hotel at the end of our week there.
