“A pleasant stay!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at this hotel and bearing in mind what we paid for our stay, we feel we got value for money. First of all I would like to mention the staff who were all very pleasant and hard working ensuring that guests were well looked after.
The food throughout our one week stay was excellent, with plenty of variety. I particularly enjoyed the salads.
The bar got quite busy on a night especially when the entertainment was on and at weekends a lot of Spanish stay at the hotel,so if you like to watch the entertainment get in there early to ensure you get a seat. But despite this the staff were always on the ball and quick to serve your drinks. Draught beer, soft drinks and tea/coffee was also available on a self service basis.
The hotel is a little tired in places for example the bars carpet must be close to replacement. Our room was spacious and comfortable with some UK TV Channels. The walls were a bit thin and we could clearly hear next doors TV on at times, fortunately they were not too late in turning it off so it did not bother us too much.
As far as we were concerned the hotels location is fine, we are pretty active and walked to Benalmadena on one day, it took us about an hour to get there and we walked into the main town/shopping area of Torremolinos on another occasion and it took us about 30-45 minutes to get there.
I used the gym every day and found it fine for my needs and there is a small indoor swimming pool if required.
To summarise overall we had a pleasant to stay!

Just back from this hotel and had to double check it was 4 star. The staff were lovely and really helpful. The rooms were dated and I agree with a previous reviewer, the paper thin walls I nearly joined in the conversation next door at one point. The linen was not even 2 star standard thin towels and thin sheets. The food was uninspiring and I'm still trying to figure out which night had the "theme", I might be feeling slightly jaundiced as I picked up a tummy bug along with quite a few other guests last week. The fact that a waiter was putting cups out with his thumb inside and then flicked something out with his nail did beg the question do they have basic hygiene training? There was no provision for basic hand hygiene in the dining room for guests either and food seemed to hang around a long time. The golden vegetable soup appeared daily. The positives I liked the position on the edge of town the airport noise was negligible, the indoor pool was very welcome as it was far to cold in the outdoor pool, lovely staff and quick airport transfer time

Room Tip: Opt for a sea view

We visited the Belplaya in March, encouraged by the reviews. We were not disappointed! We were met by really friendly reception staff with a drink , and this care extended through our weeks stay.We were visited by the Hotel`s Assistant Manager during one meal to check that everything was ok ..impressive!The food was good, plenty to eat, and lots of choices for the evening meal although the dessert menu was a bit repetitive and limited. The hot food option for lunch was not quite as good, had uncooked fish and meat on two different days, but the salad offer is great.Rooms have plenty of room and are comfortable...ask for some softer pillows as we did and it was only half an hour and they were in the room!Pool area not as modern as newer hotels but no shortage of beds.Entertainment limited,no criticism of the team because they work really hard and generate a great rapport with the multi national guests.Location for us was ok because we enjoy walking, its an hour and a half pleasant stroll to Benalmadena Marina along the sea front walk.Trains are easy and cheap to use , La Colina station is only 15 mins walk away. The hotel has a great atmosphere due to the very friendly staff and we would certainly return.

Room Tip: Less street noise on a higher floor

First impressions were good, but the combination of noise from other rooms, ill-mannered oldies - of varying nationalities, repetitive dinner menus, extremely poor evening entertainment, not-the-best location etc. etc. meant our week here did not live up to initial expectations.
Location - not the best. With hindsight, for this time of year (March), I would have chosen to stay closer to Benalmadena which was much livelier. The walk to the marina in Benalmadena took around an hour, at a good pace, so unless you want to pay out for a taxi (which I think was 16 euros, each way), it's too far to walk at night. Very few shops, bars etc near the hotel. So you are pretty much reliant on the hotel for evening entertainment.
Entertainment - daytime activities organised by Joshua, who was brilliant fun. However, it would have been better if there had been (eg) daytime quizzes, dance classes and other stuff rather than the predictable exercise session and shuffleboard, especially as the weather wasn't brilliant. The evening entertainment generally lasted less than an hour, and with the exception of the magician's show, was generally not good. (A singer - mediocre, flamenco show - yawn, drag act - mostly a dress parade. although there was one very funny part of the show). Joshua did a quiz, which was pretty well thought out considering the varying nationalities (quiz based on which country played ? style of music).
Rooms - were very big, with good bath/shower and plenty of hot water. BUT, the walls are thin - we could hear our neighbour snoring, TV on, sliding door of wardrobe crashing closed, and slamming of room doors as well as early morning cleaning of nearby rooms. I think all rooms are south-west facing, so great for getting sun well into the afternoon.
Food - loads of choice, and breakfast was fine. Lunch pretty good too, with enough choice. But when it came to the evening meals, most nights it was just not very appetising although there was a lot of choice. By the 3rd night, I was bored with what was on offer, although on one of the later nights there were delicious king prawns. I'm not sure what could be done to improve it, but I just didn't look forward to evening meal times.
Bar Service - we found that the bar staff gave priority to other nationalities, mainly the Germans, who it seems don't have the same queuing etiquette and just expect to be served as soon as they shout their order at the bar staff.
Staff at hotel - with only 1 exception ( a cleaner), all the staff were happy, helpful and courteous and seemed genuinely happy to be working there.
One final thing - at the weekend, the hotel gets an influx of Spanish families and they pretty much take over the place. Not a problem - just a bit of a shock after just seeing mainly elderly Brits and Germans at the hotel over the previous few days. There were all sorts of nationalities there during the week we stayed - we met mainly Brits and Germans. I loved watching the Germans dancing, and the attempts to have a conversation were amusing too.
This isn't a bad hotel, I just expected better from a Riu, mainly in terms of food and especially the evening entertainment, which I expected to be more of a Thomson Gold standard, instead of the feeble efforts that were on offer.

We stayed at this hotel from 22nd February to 8th March and although the weather was awful the hotel was excellent, the manager and all of his staff could not do enough to help you. The entertainment in the evening was good but not great, however the food was of a very high standard, I have had food of not such a high standard in 5* hotels. The young manager was very attentive and constantly checking the temperature of the food and the service provided to his clients. I can only say that this hotel meets and exceeds the usual standards expected of a Riu hotel.

Room Tip: All standard rooms are good if you want one facing the pool you need to upgrade.
