Walking down the beach strip in Torremolinos, it's hard to take notice of a specific restaurant sometimes. They're all fish houses with variations of grilled or fried fish, and other standard fare.
That's why Tiki stands out.
As the only (?) self-proclaimed sushi spot in the area in Torremolinos, and with its funky non-Spanish decor and ambiance, it's hard not to notice this restaurant.
First impressions are of a very pleasant atmosphere and comfortable place to spend some time. We ate here for late lunch and it was fairly quiet, so we had the opportunity to use the wonderful soft armchairs on the terrace to eat and have a few drinks.
Although this is a 'sushi' bar, we didn't even bother with sushi here. Why? Pricing. Perhaps I've become too used to Toronto $8 bento boxes and $5 California rolls, but 14 Euros for a California roll seems extremely excessive to me. Pricing was consistently high for other rolls as well, ranging from 12 Euros to 20 Euros. Sashimi was more attractively priced, but we weren't in the mood for it.
Instead, my wife ordered a lunch portion of the goat cheese ravioli, and I went for the ox burger. We started with some tempura just to keep the pretense of eating at an Asian themed restaurant up.
All great choices.
But first the Sex On The Beach. Delectable. Served with real fruit juice, and ridiculously delicious compared to what we get in North America. Highly recommended!
Fresh bread and nachos soon came out, with a delicious buttery smooth guacamole.
Soon after our tempura- lightly battered, nice and hot, nice and crispy. A couple of shrimp, a few onion rings, some broccoli. Served with a delicious plum sauce instead of the usual soya sauce.
The mains were similarly delicious - the goat cheese ravioli pouches were somewhat small but packed with flavour and perfectly cooked. The fig mixture complemented the flavours beautifully.
My burger was without a doubt one of the best I've ever eat. A wonderful olive bread, fresh tomato and lettuce, some Iberian ham paired with it...just juicy perfection. The fries had great coarse salt as well and were hot out of the fryer.
Service was very very slow and substandard. Not much thought given to checking in on us, and we had to wave for fresh drinks, despite no one else in the restaurant at that point. Could be much improved.
Overall, despite the bored service, we were very happy with the food here - different fare from the usual, and great tasting. Pricing was a bit steeper than other locations in the area, but fair at 8 Euros and 11 Euros for the respective mains. I have no idea about the quality of the sushi, but find the current pricing hard to justify.
A must try on the strip!
