“would never stay here again”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed March 21, 2010

We were after a "cheap" week break and selected the Tropicana thinking we were getting an apartment in the actual hotel. This was not so, the apartments being completely separate across a road at the back of the actual hotel. Above a disused tatooist and we believe a disused nightclub - fortunately no noise from below! The apartments appear scruffy externally although they were spotlessly clean inside and maintained that way during our week stay. The apartments were noisy from other rooms. The weather was wet towards the end of our stay and the apartment was damp. Indeed our clothes were damp and the TV did not like the conditions either! This damp atmosphere is not healthy and we both came back ill. Whilst the Tropicana Restuarant looks very nice from the seafront - don't be fooled. The pool area and gardens are overgrown and yes lots of flies per another persons review. We did not eat at the hotel so were fortunately spared that experience! Would never return to these apartments or Tropicana Hotel. We have stayed in other good hotels and apartments in the area and do love the area.

Away from the hotel itself, sited between two roads apartments offer basic clean accomodation. The toilet was already broken on arrival, however it was quickly fixed. The usual 4 hangers in each wardrobe. Kitchen area looked basic but didnt use - the cafe across the street is fine and reasonable - dont be put off by the fact there all Spanish in there! Coffee and tosts for breakfast very good. The down side its NOISY at night, (also you can hear everyone in the next room) Light sleepers be warned it goes on all night at times. The chambermaid was suppose to come in every 3 days, however we had to ask her to come in by day 4 (of or 5 day stay) said she was too busy the day before -- yes you will need to buy yr own toilet paper before she gets around to coming in! Upside -near to the beach, and cheap!

We went Sun to Sat just my mum and me, got hol at reasonable price. 4star hotel B&B.
Everything clean and new, very confortable, had good choice and standard of food.
Area, right on beach, with long promonad stretching for miles either direction, luxury harbour area with yaughts and fancy resturants then the old town with beautiful views and shopping. plenty to do for day trippers to go to sights further out, not too far.plenty to do for explorers. beach was beautiful with plenty of bars and resturants along promonade. I would really recommend this hotel in this area, other hotels were highrise and sterile looking compared to the homely atmosphere of the tropicana.

Stayed with family (elderly parents) in two studios (#607 and 612, 1st floor) end of January 2009 for 8 nights.
The rate we got booking through the hotel's website a few weeks before travel was incredibly low: €20 per studio incl. breakfast (no pre-payment). This low rate is a major factor in my overall review !

STUDIOS:
The studios are located on 1st and 2nd floor of a triangular-shaped building; Ground floor is occupied by a tattoo shop, some bars (night club) and a rental car agency. None of the shops was seen open during our stay, but loud music from one of the night clubs kept me awake on one Sunday morning and on Wednesday night between 2am and 5am (room 612).

I had a peek into most studios on my floor, so I am able to say that each is different in layout and size; only some of them feature a balcony (607 does, 612 does not).
One kitchenette of our studios was fully eqipped with cutlery and pans, while the other one lacked numerous utensils (we didn't ask for replacement). Drying towel (tea towel) is provided, but no detergent etc.

There is no elevator in the building, so prepare to drag your suitcase(s) up (up to) two flights of stairs.

TV in 607 had less channels than the one in 612 (numerous spanish channels, 3x german, 1 russian, 1 french plus Eurosport (english)).

Rooms get made up twice a week, but this service was not too impressing. Even though we changed shoes when entering the studios, the floor (tiles) became dirty (dusty) quite quick. No utensils available to clean the floor on your own (unless you buy them somewhere).

LOCATION:
The triangular-shaped building has a road on each of the longer sides onto which windows or balconies face. These are thru-road for the hotel area, so prepare for noise traffic throughout the day (it was okay during the night, but then this was off-season).
Bus line L-1 from Torremolinos stops outside the block (Destination: "Hotel Aloha Puerto") but loops back to town a different route. Taxies can be found outside hotel Pez Espada 100m down the road.

Opposite the entrance (which is on Calle de los Nidos) is a (snack) bar open Monday through Saturday serving also some food (for alternative breakfast etc.)

Located between the Studios and the hotel is a convenience store selling everything one needs for breakfast and more (opened not daily during the weekend in off-season).
Several bigger supermarkets can be found on the main road (Av. Carlota Alesandri) incl. Lidl and Supersol to shop for supplies. If you do not have a rental car at hand, but intend to buy lots of supplies, use a taxi for the return.

Access to the promenade and beach is easy (100 meters); La Carihuela with its shops and restaurants / bars is a 3-minute walk away.

CHECK-IN:
Check-in is handled by the hotel reception in c/ Tropico, 100 meters from the studios.
Check-in and -out was efficient (standard).
In case you want to use the air conditioning (cool, heat), there is a €20 deposit for the remote control.

BREAKFAST:
Included in our rate was breakfast buffet at the hotel.
The restaurant is a unique building (tropical themed), but service varied from good to bad. One never knew if coffee would be served or if it was self-service (varied per waiter).
Even though we often were alone in the restaurant and were occupying a table next to the entrance, I often had to help myself to get a 3rd set of cutlery / cup.
Selection was limited but quality was okay; very little variation throughout the 8 mornings we had breakfast.
Overall, breakfast was below standard of what one would expect from a 4-star hotel in this area (I have stayed at several other hotels in the vicinity), but was more tolerable when taking the €20-rate into account.

BOTTOMLINE:
The few negative aspects (noise, no elevator, insuffient cleaning) were sweetened by the incredibly low rate we paid. But family decided that a possible return visit would need to stay clear of a busier season, as noise levels will be above our limits then.
I now know what to expect, so I am able to judge if a new quoted rate is justified or not. There are plenty of alternatives available in that area.

  • Liked — Large studio (35 m²); central location; incredible low rate
  • Disliked — noise from night club; lacking cleaning; no elevator

We went to Tropicana Apartments 13th to 20th October. Myself,Husband and 12 year old. On first arrival I was quite dissapointed but when we got into the room I did feel better it was large and clean, yes it could have done with more cutlery and never had a kettle or a safe but it did have a pan so we used that to make coffee. The safe well there isnt one I did worry at first but we just tried to be more careful. The first night we had a problem with everything from the toilet coming up into the bath which wasnt nice. We went to the reception, which is at the hotel they apologised said because it was late at night they would have a problem getting anyone and gave us a key so we could use the bathroom in another room. Following day they said it would take two days and moved us rooms. Couldnt have asked for anything more. The area was great a minute to the beach and not much more to really nice bars and reastaurants. We loved the area and myself and husband are off again in a few weeks for a couple of days on our own and are staying in the same area.

Apartments are spread over the 2nd and 3rd floors. The bottom floor consists of tatty shops, a tatoo shop, car rental and the whole floor looked closed down and looked very scruffy. From the outside it looks awful. These apartments are housed on a street behind the 4 Star Tropicana Hotel. So it is a bit confusing. There is no sea view from the unfurnished balconies. You just look across the road at other appartments or the entrace of a Hotel. You can however use the pool at the Hotel Tropicana and have your meals there as we did.

There is no reception in the Apartments but when you get into the room it is very large and spacious with lots of storage space and a small kitchen area. The beds are very comfortable. Cleaning and change of linen is twice a week only. There was no hairdryer or no safe. We asked if we could get a safe in Hotel Tropicana but we were refused.

We had D/BB and had all our meals in the 4 Star Tropicana Hotel. Breakfast was the best selection I have ever seen and is selfservice. There was a limited enough choice for Dinner but it was waiter service. The service was excellent. They make you feel very special indeed and the restaurant is beautiful. We had liqueurs on the house every night. A lovely touch.

Bear in mind though that the Apartments are in a different building to the hotel. The website on which we booked gave very misleading information. Once in the apartments they actually are comfortable.

We would stay again. You get used to the building although the outside needs doing up.
