“Tired but very Peaceful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2013

Having read the reviews on here I was somewhat confused however what I needed to understand was that Heritage Resorts own several blocks and resorts in the area. There are three fairly high blocks close to the beach and near reception and the two on site restaurants, then there are some villas and the See breeze and El Toro complex. My review is for our apartment at El Toro in the Marbessa Urbanisation.

I suppose it depends what you are looking for, if you have young children or teenagers then it is possible this is not the complex for you. On arrival at reception we were provided with a map to the El Toro complex which is about 1 mile up a hill. If you arrive by taxi then there are no facilities to get you, your family or luggage up that hill and I would imagine it would be a nightmare in hot weather. Luckily we had a car so we were able to drive up to the complex and access the private gated are using the key provided.

I was travelling with my two grown up daughters who just wanted to chill out by the pool and relax and this is exactly what we got, an apartment in beautiful surrounds with the pool just a few steps from our apartment's patio. There is nothing else there, although there is a large supermarket and restaurant within walking distance you really need a car even to nip down to reception.

The apartment itself was a little tired but clean with the entrance being on the first floor where the bedrooms were with a staircase down to the kitchen and living area and patio out to the lawns and pool. The bathrooms like the rest of the unit were in need of refurbishment. One had a bath and the other a shower with a very clingy curtain making it impossible not to soak the floor.

We were cleaned once on Wednesday with a change of bedding and towels. Parking was easy with our own car port and if you just want to relax by the pool then this is the place for you as it is just a few steps from your own patio making it feel as if you had your own private pool. The resort was very quiet and having spoken to an owner who has visited for the past 25 years she said it was always peaceful.

The safe was not good, it was the hidden by a fascia that looked like an electrical outlet but it was so small my wallet would not fit inside. Forget it if you have phones, ipads, kindles etc our three passports about filled it.

My daughters loved it because of the peace and quiet and we had some lovely meals each evening driving out to a different place. So if this is what you like then it is fine but not for those who are after any form of entertainment and if you have children remember the pool is not fenced off or attended by any lifeguards. It is also unheated!

Please feel free to email me if you have any specific questions, especially if you are having to attend the sales breakfast meeting as they are trying to sell floating time and using the private villas as examples.

Room Tip: As for a south facing ground floor apartment if you are given El Toro Apartments. We had T 104

We purchased a timeshare at Club Playa Real in May 2012. As I write (end of April 3013) we took our week to try it out before giving family and friends the use of it. Oh dear.

When we bought it were shown villas and apartments that were large, clean, well appointed and that is what we believed we were buying. When we got here we were given a bunch of keys and sent to a tired old scabby apartment block up the hill.

We met with them yesterday to be told we only had a Silver Membership (nothing said about this when we bought it) but we could upgrade to Diamond (which gives you the villa) for....another £16,000!

Then our intelligence was insulted with 'you should use the points exchange scheme once you understand it' to get better accommodation.

Do not buy any timeshare from them. They will sell you one at half price which is actually not half price, it is a downgrade of level. They may describe this as a 'repossession'. Their Diamond level is £21k, their Silver is £12k. Silver is not worth having - we have literally walked out of better holiday accommodation.

They will try to confuse you with talk of ICE points exchange benefits. Do not listen, you will honestly get better holidays just booking them normally.

The only help we were given was either pay to upgrade or the website of people who would help sell our awful timeshare. Turns out the website does not even exist. And the truth is that nobody will want to buy it off you anyway.

This resort is right on the beach. We could walk the length of the pool and then be at the gate that gave access to the beach. I had asked for an apartment that easy to reach and was sunny and that was what we were given. Although we had not stayed here previously we did know where the resort was situated. If one follows the instructions given by the resort it is easy to find. Our balcony was above the restaurant patio and we could see the sea.

It was a beautiful apartment. I liked the fact that both bathrooms had windows. The kitchen was the largest I have ever had in a timeshare and had natural light from a window. It had: a fridge/freezer; washing machine but no tumble drier; an oven and a ceramic hob, which although worn worked perfectly. I found it easier to use than the ceramic touch hob I had had in another resort. There was a hand blender and all the usual kitchen tools.

The bar had a “Happy Hour” every evening and the Italian restaurant served pasta and pizzas at a very reasonable price as well as other dishes. The staff was very friendly. There was no air conditioning/heating in the bedrooms although there was an efficient unit in the living area and when I said we were cold on the first morning we were immediately given portable heaters. There was a TV and a DVD player but the choice of programmes was dire. No BBC which we have always found at other resorts of the same quality. We were lucky that we had taken a boxed set of “The Wire”. The management may think that one does not watch TV on holiday but when medication prevents one from taking more than one drink at the bar and the light is too dim for prolonged reading there is little else to do in winter. We heard the Flamenco show beneath us one evening but as we had already seen one at another resort we didn’t go.
We used to walk to the Papillon restaurant every morning and have a coffee as it has free Wifi

There is a large outdoor pool, a small indoor pool and a fitness area. A supermarket is within walking distance but to get a newspaper we had to go to the Opencor supermarket the other side of the highway or to the newsagent opposite Alanda in Elviria. In winter I would recommend a car so one can easily visit other towns. The resort is well placed for visiting Marbella, Ronda, Mijas and Malaga. To visit Malaga we usually take the car to Fuengirola and the train from there. If you don’t mind longer journeys, visits to Granada, Cordoba and even Seville are possible.

The staff was friendly and efficient and the resort was clean and comfortable. My main complaint was the TV package that the resort had!

As I read the previous reviews, it became apparent that various properties were being described. Playa Real is the central hotel which houses reception, the indoor pool, sauna and fitness room.

Compared to some of the other Heritage properties that we have stayed at in the area, the Playa Real is fast becoming dated and slightly worn. Some TLC is needed.

The one-bedroom unit was quite small, with the very smallest master bedroom we have ever occupied in Spain. The bed was a double, not a queen. There was not room for even a dresser. There is no dishwasher in the one-bedroom units. The bathroom was adequate with two sinks.

The cleaning service changes towels and sheets once mid-week. Bathroom counters seem to be ignored.

The reception staff was very friendly and helpful. When our DVD player and washing machine didn't work, they were replaced within the hour.

The indoor pool area is very clean, but there was usually sand in the whirlpool. The men's and ladies' dressing rooms flood any time anyone uses the shower.

The outside pool/garden area is nicely landscaped and extends down right to the beach. A lovely place to sit, read and enjoy the waves.

After reading previous reviews, we went in with very low expectations and we were pleasantly surprised!

It was a bit difficult to find, so more and bigger signage is needed. Epecially on the service road off A7, as we missed the turn. Our condo in Toro was behind a security gate, grounds and pool area were clean and landscaped, surrounding wall had some stucco peeling off but it gave a rustic feel & did not offend us. Neither did the mild mildew smell that is found at any resort near an ocean. Opening the doors to air the unit for a few hours solves the problem.

We had car port parking at ground level under the condo, which was located on the second floor. The unit was very clean with a well stocked kitchen. Living area had a hide-a-bed couch, TV and French doors leading to a ocean view veranda with a table and chairs where we ate meals and had drinks. :-)

A double bed private bedroom with plenty of clean linens and attached full bathroom was on the third floor, it also had French doors leading to a sea view balcony. Again everything was clean.

We didn't use any resort amenities outside of El Toro, and we had a hired car to travel the surrounding towns like Ronda, Sevilla, Tarifa (take a boat to Morocco). We highly recommend this! We were to busy to sit through sales pitch, and were not bothered by resort staff to do so.

Our only major complaint is that the coin operated washer and dryer at El Toro do not work. Don't waste your time with them! Go to the gas station on A-7 and do your laundry there. Great fast food stand directly behind the Laundromat, so you can eat an affordable meal also.

All in all we enjoyed our stay at Club Marbesa and will be back, hopefully next year. :-D

Arrived here in the evening and check in was very quick. We had been upgraded to a two bedroom unit with sea view. Unit was well equiped for 6 people, and there was only two of us !!
As it was January and dark by 6pm it was pleasent to have a television showing BBC and ITV. The complex is 10mins drive from Marbella if you want night life. We just wanted a restfull week with walks on the beach and meals out at night. The two restaurants at the resort were very good with reasonable prices. The restaurants at the camp site up the road are more spanish and very welcoming.
The only problem we found, was locating the unit following check in. The Key that is allocated opens a gate to the car park. In the dark this was quite difficult to find. Maybe a staff member should accompany you to the unit.
Staff were all very helpful and we would stay at this resort again

Room Tip: We stayed in 511. It had a large open plan lounge dinning area, kitchen, two bedrooms, two bathrooms an...
