“Marbella Club hotel: why it IS still the best hotel in Marbella”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 9, 2013

We have just come back from a week at the Marbella Club. In the 13 years I have gone to Marbella, I have stayed at almost all the 5 star properties, including:

Puente Romano
Villa Padierna
Don Carlos
Vincci Estrella
Guadalpin Marbella
NH Alanda

I can honestly say I won't ever be staying anywhere else but the Marbella Club, after this holiday! Here's why:

Room: We had a junior suite. All the rooms have been refurbished in the last year and ours had pretty furnishings and was a really good size. We had a large terrace with sun loungers and table. The bathroom had a double sink, bathtub and walk in shower. At the Puente Romano, the sort of 'sister' hotel, the same room had THE most dreadful walk in shower, with a shower fit only to wash our dogs! Something out of the 1970's and as a woman, would deter me from staying there again!

Pools: As they only have around 100 rooms, you never feel crowded. The pools are lovely and well maintained and the sunbeds all have lovely mattresses to lie on - with unlimited towels. You don't need to get up at the crack of dawn to reserve them, as the hotel doesn't have hundreds of rooms. Such a relief!

Outside bar: if you go between June to October, the outdoor bar is STUNNING at night. They have a pianist and singer and you sit amongst trees and the stars. It's so beautiful and I've been going there for years and it still impresses me.

Spa: This was a real treat. It's not cheap but my husband and I both had amazing massages and she unlocked tension in my shoulders, so I'd recommend it! You also get to use the hydropool beforehand which is incredible - full of jets including ones around underwater loungers! Also use the steam room as it's like a proper hammam and really lovely.

Food: breakfast is a buffet and has everything you'd need. It's not over the top but the hotel isn't either. But there's a chef preparing eggs any style and you have all the usual stuff.

Dinner is outside in the summer and is an amazing experience. Great food and setting.

Service: THIS IS WHERE THEY EXCEL! The staff have nore often than not been there for many years. This is such a lovely feature and as we had our wedding there last summer, we know a lot of them and they are so polite and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble; they go out of their way to please and if you have any issue in your room, they are there in minutes to rectify it. The same cannot be said in a number of other hotels in Marbella and this is what you pay more for, amongst other things.

Location: I think it's perfect. You have the beach at the bottom of the property, along with the old town 5 minutes by car/ taxi and the port (Puerto Banus) 6 minutes in the other direction.

You can even walk to one of our favourite restaurants, Villa Tiberio, just 7-10 minutes by foot!

If you're looking for a true 5 star hotel in the traditional/ Leading Hotels of the World sense, this is the one to choose.

My wife and I stayed here from 8/20-29. Top shelf service. Miguel Rodriguez (Concierge) made all the dinner reservations and planned all side trip excursions prior to our arrival at my request.
My wife and I stayed at the Marbella Club from 8/20-29. The concierge at the hotel, Miguel Rodriguez planned four trips with CostAfrica tour operator, for us prior to our arrival. All trips were great (Tangier, Granada, Seville, and Ronda). If you plan on taking side trips, as for Andreas, the guide. He was fantastic.

The Hotel is very well maintained and managed. The junior suite we had was great. Everything worked well, e.g., a/c, shower bath, toilet, bidet. Nightly turn down service was timely. The spa, beach, pools, were all well managed and run well. The numerous breakfast choices of food to pick from was most enjoyable. The lunch buffet was one of the best we had anywhere we have traveled. The only thing we could think of in terms of needing improvement were the dinners at the hotel. We dined in both restaurants for dinner and found the food to be unremarkable. Dinners in restaurants in the Old Town where we dined, were far superior and were a fraction of the cost of the dinners in the hotel. Great restaurants in the Old Town included Tempora, Restaurante Messina, Casanis Bistrot Restaurant, Paco Jimenez, Marbella Patio, Il Tartufo, and the the best was Skina. The owner of Skina is Marcos Granda. The quality and presentation of the food is his restaurant was the best we had in all of the 10 days we were in Marbella.

We would return to the Marbella Club without blinking. Next time we might rent a villa. But we would not dine in the two hotel's restaurants for dinner. Not that that they were bad, just that the food was unremarkable.

Room Tip: Rent a junior suite, suite or villa.

We arrived at the Marbella Club after a long day of travel. Upon our arrival we were courteously greeted by the front desk and provided service to our rooms.

Upon entering our room we immediately noticed a strong foul sewage odor!

The attendant that was assisting us with our luggage also noticed it and advised that we open the windows to ventilate the room. We immediately called the Front desk and advised them that the room had a foul odor and if there were other rooms available for us to move to. They said they had no other suite rooms available with an Ocean View – which is what we had specifically requested and for which we had paid a premium.

Instead they asked us to allow maintenance staff to come to our room to see if there was anything they could do. We advised that the odor seemed to be coming from the ventilation system and not the bathroom or other areas. Nevertheless we allowed them to come. While we waited and walked around the room we noticed that the carpeting was extremely soiled from food, drinks and other stains. Having a one year old which would be crawling around on the floor we again called the front desk and they advised that they would send up a new rug.

Maintenance personnel arrived and proceeded to change the filters in the room air conditioner as well as filters outside the room. Bathroom staff also arrived and added air fresheners in the bathroom. A few minutes later a single maintenance person came with a large new area rug which I assisted them in replacing by moving furniture with them and getting the new rug in place – very exhausting!

Buy this time it was well after 9PM and we went out for a quick dinner. Upon returning we again found the room with a foul sewage smell. Also some of the lights in the bedroom did not work – which I called down to the front desk and they sent someone up to replace them.

The following day my wife went to use the blow dryer and found that it was broken – which again the front desk replaced with a new blow dryer. The room also continued to have a foul smell.

The following day we went to iron a shirt and found the iron to be extremely rusted and the iron board bent. We did our best to use it as is and when we returned found a new iron and ironing board had been provided by the staff. We ordered room service and when the staff moved one of the tables into our living room from the outside deck– it broke in half – we made do and the next day upon our return from the beach found a maintenance person repairing the table.

The foul smell continued through the length of our stay and after speaking with some of the maintenance staff they said that some of the rooms had an “odor issue”!

I am extremely disappointed with our stay at the Marbella Club Hotel!

The foul odor was something that we were confronted with every time we entered the room during the course of our stay. In addition, the fact that no one had taken the responsibility to review the room and see that the rug was severely soiled, iron was rusted, lights did not work, table was broken and other items required replacing was unacceptable.

This is not the quality that I expected or normally receive in a hotel and room of this category. While I appreciate the staff immediately addressing the issues and also providing us with a bottle of wine as a token of regret, it is not my job to find issues and then have the hotel address them after I have had to deal with them. The foul smell in our room was simply not acceptable!

Rooms need to be upgraded/renovated and management needs to be more attentive to address issues pro-actively not only after a guest has found a problem!

Room Tip: We had an issue with the ocean front suite - foul sewage smell - we were advised by hotel cleaning s...

Dear Mr. Perez,

Thank you for taking the time to share your review. We appreciate your feedback. The experiences you described are not characteristic of the level of service we provide, and we would like to apologize that your stay with us did not exceed expectations. Our aim is to always welcome guests to rooms that are in exceptional condition. As such, we express regret that we were having difficulty with the air ventilation system in your room and that the carpet was stained. We are pleased to know that our hotel maintenance and house-keeping team responded to your complaint diligently. Our Sea View Suites are spectacular so we understand your desire to stay in the room when we offered an alternate suite. We apologize for the inconvenience and the impact it had on your arrival and your impression.

We are pleased to inform you that 80% of our room inventory has been renovated and the remaining 20% will be renovated this coming winter. We hope to welcome you back to the hotel so that you may experience the enhancements we have made to the property and suites. Much to my regret we did not have the opportunity to meet in person. However, I would be pleased to discuss your previous stay personally should you wish.

Sincerely,

We enjoyed our stay at Marbella club hotel. Our room was beautiful, spacious and lacking for nothing inside, delicious fruit basket on arrival with a bottle of wine!...the downside of the junior suite was it was facing the pathway and at all times we had to close our curtains for privacy, therefore having to switch on lights during the day making it quite depressing- knowing the sun is shining outside! The rooms lacked soundproofing and this was quite disconcerting as we could hear everything that everyone around was doing at all times of the day/night!

Spa was very good and the staff was brilliant, professional and accommodating! Gym well equipped! Pool area was slightly crowded and too many children - we stayed on the beach which were well looked after and had good service in regards to drinks!
We enjoyed eating at the MC restaurant down by the beach! Chic, wonderful light meals and truly quite classy for a beach place! Very popular ..service was great there!

The concierge service was great and always at your disposal, zipping you back and forth in the golf carts- wherever you wanted to go!
I must mention Faye Jones-( operations manager Marbella) - she was fantastic in assisting us to select top restaurants, clubs! Emailing us all sorts of information on yacht hiring etc... Professional and truly an asset for guests in this hotel to get reservations etc done without the fear of being let down! We appreciated her efforts and made our stay stress free as we managed to secure everything ahead of time!
In conclusion overall a beautiful hotel with stunning well manicured gardens..oh yes must add they even have rabbits hopping around near the rooms-quite sweet!

We have just returned from a wonderful stay at the marbella club hotel. The hotel rooms and villas are set in the most lovely gardens which are beautifully maintained. There are two pools, one set within the gardens, with plenty of loungers and attentive staff. There is a pool side restaurant where we enjoyed lunch everyday, the menu is varied and the food of a high and consistent standard, the service was brilliant.
The other pool is a 2 minute walk away through the grounds, it's a little busier but the beach is right by which has plenty of beds and is attended by the helpful staff.
We enjoyed drinks in the lovely bar, where the service was again of a high and charmingly old-school nature. Dinner in the Grill restaurant was a great experience, it is expensive and the food is a little hit or miss but still a most enjoyable evening. There are also lots of restaurant within walking distance of the hotel.
The gym was well equipped and modern and the kids club looked like a spread from Elle decoration and seemed most popular with the children!
The only downside was the lack of soundproofing between the rooms, which at times was quite disconcerting.
Overall a really great stay in a beautiful setting with amazing staff and quality all round.

Was really looking forward to our 5 night stay but in short the rooms are dated the food extremely expensive and if due to the swimming pool actually being a restaurant with 30 sun loungers the beach was the only place to catch the sun.
The golf course was wonderful and infact the hi light of our holiday.

Overall Marbella Club is a really good hotel. Very nice staff, good food, location etc. It is in need of this refurb they are now doing, we stayed in a great new room and our friends room was a blend of 80s interior highlights. So I would request a new room when you book. We stayed for a few nights with our little girls, the new kids club just opened and it is absolutely gorgeous, so stylish and very friendly staff. Worth going just for that! We also had a adorable babysitter which our girls loved. We had lunch every day on the beach and the food was very good, but if you have little ones the beach isn't that perfect as it is very steep down to the water. But all taken into the account, a very pleasant stay and we would happily go back.
