We visited the Marriott Beach Resort in Marbella July 18 through July 25th 2013. The resort is very nice and adheres to the Marriot standard for high quality.
The property is gorgeous and definitely has a European flavor that you would expect. The property is spacious while maintaining a intimate atmosphere. You will find that the Villas are very modern and spacious and you are able to get to any place on the property easily.
The property has a main pool that tends to be frequented by families and people looking for a bit more excitement and noise. The adult pool and we called or the "quite" pool near the main reception is best suited for people looks for a bit more quite and tranquility.
The grounds are well maintained and the pools and surrounding areas look prestige every morning ready for their guests. The main house has steam rooms and sauna for men and women that are very refreshing after a day In the sun. The fitness areas is better that many that you will find at resorts although the free weight area is a bit cramped. The have a separate room in the basement for spinning, Zumba and other group aerobic activities.
One draw back is that the property does not have outdoor grills forcing you to cook meals indoors or go out. Many of the other Marriott properties including Ko Olina our home property have outdoor grills which enables guests to expand the cooking options. The grills also add a community aspect as you are able to share recipes or talk about the days activities with other guests.
The staff is super friendly. My wife is fluid in Spanish and was able to converse with the staff in their local language. All the staff speak English and other languages in many cases.
One minor gripe I would have to say is that the staff is not super proactive. Meaning if you don't ask they won't tell you. Example: we booked a tour to Tangier, Morocco through the Marriott Concierge (the tour is definitely recommended). However we did not know that it was Ramadan and the many of the shops were closed. When we got on the tour buss heading to the ferry that was the first thing our guide mentioned. It still turned out to be a full day tour (6 am depart and return at 5:30 pm) however we had a few detours to local shops (spice shop and a shop that sold rugs) that seemed like they were somehow affiliated or related to the tour guide. Nonetheless it would have been good to know this in advance about Ramadan. Second gripe, We also had an issue with our Villa door lock. It would not open on 4 instances and required the maintenance person to let us in with a manual key. We finally got fed up and requested the door lock be replaced after being locked out again with melting ice-cream in you grocery bags.
We recommend a rental car to get around to markets etc. there is a small market very near the Marriott and you can find the larger Market (Hypercore) in downtown Marbella. The Saturday flea market in a nearby mall is a must. You will find all types of quality merchandise from local venders and artists.
Driving is pretty easy, easier than many European cities. A GPS is highly recommended. Be careful in the round abouts. The traffic signs are well marked and intuitive. Be advised is you do rents a car be very careful on the insurance charges. Many Visa cards will provide basic collision coverage. The full coverage can be very expensive. You will need insurance parking spaces everywhere you go are SMALL and it wild be easy to get bumper, side panel and door dings or scrapes.
On site food
After reading some of the other reviews we steered clear of the major restaurant. We did however eat at the pool bar on our arrival and the food was much better than advertised in other posts.
If you can swing it you should definitely go to Marbella. Rent a car like we did then drive to Seville (a must see city) and Malaga. The AC Hotels affiliated with Marriot and very nice and modern and they are located in the heart of the city.
