“Still a great resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2012

We returned to Marriott Marbella through a timeshare swap after almost three and a half years and were very happy to find this is still a very good resort that we’d happily recommend to anyone, so long as they realise it’s situated in an urbanizacion of villas and apartment blocks rather than in a holiday resort or town. We won’t repeat all of the detail in our previous review, which you’ll probably be able to access if you wish via a link at the bottom of the page, but it all holds true. The spacious apartments and the resort grounds are still very well maintained. The kitchen area is well appointed, the showers are still superb, the beds are still exceptionally comfortable, and it’s good to see there are still plenty of UK channels for us Brits on the new 32 inch LCD TVs (plus a DVD player) if the winter/spring weather isn’t too good, which was lucky for us as we’d left glorious weather at home in the UK.

We’re still not convinced the onsite restaurant El Med is worth the money so we gave it a miss. When you stay here, Marriotts give you a Privilege Card that will give you discounts at various restaurants and attractions locally and along the coast. Surprisingly, or perhaps not, one of the worst offers is given by El Med itself. You’ll eat well enough in the couple of Chiringuitos on the beach close to the resort and the choice of eateries within walking distance is quite reasonable. Restaurant Elviria close to the autovia overpass is still our favourite for a treat and we found out too late that they’ll give you a discount if you show your Privilege Card, even though they don’t officially participate in the scheme. Next time!

Pictures say more than words so we’ve attached a selection showing the apartment and grounds. We don’t normally go back to the same place in the same year but as Marriott Marbella is such a good quality resort and so centrally placed for exploring the Costa Del Sol we’ll be back in the autumn with friends.

This was my second stay here in a 3 bed appartment, last year with the girls and this year with my family and it ticked all boxes on both very different occasions. The appartments are equipped to a high level and you will rest well and enjoy you new "home".

All staff we came into contact were good although pool staff weirdly inconsistent in applying rules. My daughter and friend were banned from playing with a small ball in pool but jacuzzi was overrun with small boys - mine included:( dunking each other and drinking and spilling their fizzy drinks!

An observation between this year and last - the on-site shop which last year was pleasantly reasonable, is now very expensive.

Try hiring a car for transfers, bound to be cheaper than taxis. We only used ours for the airport hop, not being a lover of driving abroad but since there were 5 of us we saved nearly £100. Directions on Marriott website are good and it will take you 40 mins.

I have eaten at the Beachside Bar and Chill Bar which are ok- Chill Bar significantly nicer but neither are cheap. The nearby restaurants are nothing to write home about, would suggest a stroll up to El Barrancon de las Tapas in Elviria for a better value and more Spanish experience.

Will definitely return for another short-break. I like the Mariott brand and when leisure time is scarce it is good to have the reassurance that everything will be as it should.

We stayed end February-early March 2012 to escape the winter cold of our more Northern European home city. We had a three bedroom apartment with sea view which was superb (spacious, clean, well equipped and very comfortable). The apartments are extremely well equipped and many details to make the stay as easy as possible (especially for families) are thought of. The kids' club was extremely well run and our children loved it. The beach is very nice and one can make great, unending walks. The spa leaves something to be desired. We loved the family pool as we didn't have to worry about keeping our four kids on tiptoes and whispering. It's a great pity that Marriott vacation clubs don't cater for room service as it would be great to have the option to have food delivered. The staff was in general friendly. Price to quality ratio was excellent as we got a great deal through the interval international. This is an easy destination for families with kids. The on-site mini-supermarket is pretty pricey but handy. We preferred this resort to the Playa Andaluzia which we visited last year as it struck us as being a touch more kids' friendly and closer to the airport of Malaga. We would return to this hotel.

This was our third stay at this great hotel and I have reviewed it each time we have visited. The resort is still great with the rooms spacious and the facilities excellent. We noticed a few flaws this time but still enjoyed our stay.

We travel with our two sons aged 18 months and 4 years old. The combination of apartments and hotel facilities are great for travelling with a young family. At GBP269 a night we got a two bed apartment with breakfast included. The latter proved good value as would have been an extra GBP46 on top for all the have breakfast.

We were allocated a sea view room. The one thing I have always found a bit frustrating about this hotel is the late check in time of 4pm. With a young family, this isn't great. Check out is 10am. They say that this time lapse is so that proper cleaning can take place, but can't they just get more staff to clean, allowing for a 2pm check in? Peak or off-peak season (been both times) the turnaround time seems to make no difference.

For the third time running, we arrived at about 2pm unable to check in and were told to give our contact number and we would be called when the room was ready. No one called us (again for the third time running) and so we just called back at reception at 4.15pm to find the room was ready to check-in to. Knowing we had small children in tow, a call asap would have been helpful.

We were allocated a smoking room, despite Marriott preferences being non-smoking. In fairness to the staff, they overlooked our request by trying to allocate a room with a fantastic view. We could smell smoke so we had to move. We were still given a great room having changed though.

After that, we had an enjoyable stay. Breakfast was great, the beach great and the cleaning and maintenance of the resort great. My criticism really focuses on the housekeeping. This has gone downhill in the two years that I have been visiting. On this occasion, a five night stay saw us have some towels changed once and some cushions plumped up. On earlier occasions we have had dishwasher tablets, soap, linen etc changed once within a five night stay. Not on this occasion. In fact, on one day we had no housekeeping at all and on another, had to call and ask if they were coming. They must have spent no more than 5 minutes in the property near to 5pm.

The welcome brochure/booklet does say that a full clean only takes place once a week but we expected more than what we got on this occasion. No linen change on a 5 night stay is not really acceptable. I also got dirty feet walking around the apartment. I haven't experienced this before. Our thoughts were compounded when having checked out, we realised that we had not seen a member of housekeeping or their carts around the resort all week. This hasn't happened before. Perhaps the staff have been cut, and if so, it shows.

Overall though, we would still return as the resort is of a high standard and great with children. The staff were friendly and great our boys. I doubt I would visit if it were just me and my wife though.

I hope that Marriott sorts out the housekeeping issue as we are huge fans of this hotel resort and I have scored it lower this time, which is a shame.

Room Tip: Ask for a view but be prepared to wait until after 4pm!

The Marriott is an amazing place to stay. The rooms are large and will be able to cope with what ever you need to do in it. The suroundings are to die for the view of the sea is beautiful and the beach is on your doorstep. Having nikki beach so close it is easy to go out and enjoy the night life but you can get far enough away if you have small children or feel quiet. Over all the staff are amazing i can not fault it this is place you need to go to.

Room Tip: All rooms are good and have views but some are better than others make sure you are facing the sea.

My family own a couple of weeks here so we usually go at least once a year. I absolutely love this place. It is a home away from home, very relaxing and luxurious. It is a really good base to travel the area and has some fantastic restaurants in the area. Puerto Banus is about 15 mins in a taxi and is a good place to go for a boozy night out. Marbella old town is about 10 mins in a taxi and is great for tapas, meals and low key drinks.

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean front apartment, top floor.

We have just spent a week at the resort and used it as a base for local golf. Our 18 y o son accompanied us and the free wi-fi was very useful.

All of the facilities are excellent and the staff are fantastic as you would expect.

There is more for kids to do here and the beach is sandier, so this is slightly better for families with small children that the Playa Analuza resort in Estepona, another 20 minutes south.
