“Our Honeymoon”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2012

Our stay here was the middle leg of our honeymoon trip. Overall, we were pleased with the hotel and service. Upon arriving at 4 pm our room was not ready because they had accomodated a late checkout to the person before us so to appease us they gave us a balinese bed for either that day or another day. Of course, I chose the next day so we can use it for the whole day. Its value was 100 Euros. We had a deluxe room on the 6th floor with a beautiful view and it was clean. Some parts of the hotel did look like they need updating such as the brass in the lobby and elevator doors. The red level service included access to a lounge that had drinks and snacks from 11-9 as well as a concierge desk. Although the concierge desk was friendly, they did not offer any information about things to do in the area or restaurants to go to. All information had to be pulled out of them. They did not give us brochures for excursions either. We ended up just relaxing by the pool each day. The pool was nice but it fills up by ten each morning. I found this rather annoying that on our honeymoon we had to wake early and rush to breakfast to get by the pool to secure a chair. Additionally, there were a lot more children at the resort than I had envisioned and some were not well behaved. The buffet breakfast was nice as was the Latin Theme night (dinner and music). Our favorite part of the hotel was the Cappuccino restaurant down by the beach. We enjoyed the music and service there. The menu has something you can order for any time of day but the prices are inconsistent. We had a ridiculously priced tuna roll one night but at least it was yummy. We shared a roast chicken ciabatta one afternoon which was inexpensive and huge! The wifi seemed to be an issue as well, we were constantly getting kicked out and it was very slow. While the overall hotel was a good experience, it is still not what we had expected for our honeymoon. Lastly, the red level concierge knew we were on our honeymoon (from both our travel agent and from us) and nothing special was done for us. They said they would send us champagne and strawberries on our last night there but it never happened.

Room Tip: Get a higher floor so you can enjoy the view, and try to be a distance from the elevator

Myself and partner stayed at the hotel.. It was a most pleasant and relaxing place to stay.. Staff very friendly.. Breakfast time was just ok we had to wait a while after ordering coffee think they could do better with this service.. I also found the choice of eateries very disappointing. When asked about this we were told that there were many other great places to eat in Marbella?? Over all we could not otherwise fault this well maintained hotel. Derry northern Ireland

WIFI - is terrible
HOT WATER - not always, late at night perhaps some days - pay 5 star rate for cold showers
OUT DATED COMPUTER SYSTEMS, too long to do a check-in
STAFF - VERY GOOD AND FRIENDLY
OLD INFRASTRUCTURE
LOCATION is GREAT
VALUE - will not stay a 2nd time, rather stay at other newer hotels in Marbella

Room Tip: request higher up floors

We often stay in 5* hotels now that all the kids have flown the nest. I have never before arrived at such a hotel and not been greeted at the entrance. We paid extra for a private transfer so they knew we were coming! After checking in were shown to our room, no instructions on where everything was and not even told wher breakfast would be in the morning. However, the room was lovely with a stunning view of the pools, gardens and beyond to the sea. Had a fabulous meal in the hotel that evening and the service was impeccable.
The following morning we found breakfast quite easily to be met by a girl who gave us a card, as it was our first morning, which promised to show us around if we went with her to reception area, off we went after a superb breakfast with yet again impeccable service. In reception we weren't shown around we were shown brouchures of Gran Melia time share properties down the road with incentives to visit if we went to look, why on earth would we wast our holiday doing that when we didn't even know anything about the hotel that we had already paid through the nose to stay in?
A strange hotel in summary, the room, housekeeping, service, food, bars, pool area with the fabulous guy that makes you comfortable with sun loungers, cushions, towels and shade etc were faultless but the reception and welcome lets the whole experience down. That said I would recommend this hotel as the pluses do outweigh the minuses considerably.

Room Tip: Ask for sea view on one of the upper floors as the views are wonderful

This is not at all what I would class a 5 star hotel. From start to finish, a disaster. No-one at the door to take bags. Had to wait FOREVER at reception to check in. Tons of problems checking in, which they cannot solve but promise to deal with but of course never did. Breakfast buffet made me seriously ill. The elevator doors are so badly scratched, they look like someone was trying desperately to escape. No real view from any of the rooms. The beach is full of rocks so you can't swim, and there's nowhere to sit, since there are so few chairs, it's full by 10am.

There's an amazing restaurant situated on the hotel grounds, but it's fully booked months in advance, and hotel guests don't get any special treatment, so all you can do is watch others turn up and have a great meat - useless. The hotel restaurant, where you can actually eat, is rubbish. The oyster bar is OK if you've got 45 minutes to wait before anything (food or drink) turns up after ordering (and of course no apology).

The only good things was the pool area and the weather. Whatever you do, do not stay here if you expect a 5 star resort.

This was a 3 night 'child free' treat, we had a deluxe sea view room on the 3 rd floor, which was lovely (large twin beds pushed together). There were Clarins toiletries in the bathroom, and as a special treat, I called the hotel a few days earlier and pre booked the 'romantic package'. On arrival however the romantic package hadn't been fully implemented, just the Rose petals on the bed and around the bath, and bath crystals. I then had to spoil the surprise to my husband, by calling down to have the champagne and strawberries sent to the room, they came quickly, but still no candles, which I called down again for when we came in from dinner. This didn't spoil our stay at the hotel, it was lovely really. When I mentioned my 'disappointment' to reception the next day, it was really well handled, and I was offered free use of one of the Balinese beds by the pool for a day, worth over 100 euros, I couldn't use this, as we were out all the next day, so I asked for a late check out on our last day instead, and this was accommodated. The breakfast buffet here was superb, everything you could want, the pool area was nice and the pool attendants were great for sorting out umbrellas and beds wherever you wanted. We went out to Marbella to eat on 2 evenings, only eating at the hotel on the 1 st night, as we had arrived at 10pm to the hotel. We had a light bite to eat at cappuccino beach bar/restaurant by the sea, which was very nice, quick service. There is plenty of shops/ places to eat either side of the hotel on the beach side, we wandered out there for lunch, icecreams and water, plus there are beach sellers and little shops if you don't fancy going into town! It is only 20mins to Marbella, or about 6 euros in a taxi, and a lovely place to be in the evening, just wandering around, pleanty of choices of places to eat. I had researched on here beforehand, and we chose Skina - see my review on there- it was a 12 ish course taster menu, all Spanish, but very well presented and delicious, you have to be adventurous though, it is pricey, but worth it for a treat.
My 'must go' recommendation is Indarra, walkable from the hotel, just on an ordinary side road, but the food was incredible, all home made traditional food from the Basque area, proudly presented by the father and son, the mother makes the food in the kitchen. The wine was lovely too, and all for 30 euros each- incredible.
We also drove out to Ronda one day, a lovely place, and hour away, very picturesque driving there throught the mountains etc, boring for children perhaps, but we enjoyed it!

Room Tip: go for sea view, level 3 or above
