Description: This emblematic wine cellar built in an old house from the 18th century is a meeting place for people of all ages. It has welcomed many generations of artists, flamenco dancers or politicians. It is named after formerly popular city figures called 'los pimpis', young people who had helped ship crews or passengers and had become the first city guides. It is furnished in the style of Malaga, and offers local wines and delicious gastronomy which is very popular in the city. The soul of the restaurant is the lounge with the vintage wine barrels, signed by famous people, such as the family Picasso, the painter Barcelo, the bullfighter Cordobes, The Duchess of Alba, Carmen Thyssen and Antonio Banderas, who show the historical value of this place. This establisment is in the old town of Malaga, next to the Museum Picasso, La Alcazaba (the Citadel of Malaga) and the Roman Theatre.

“The place with a soul :))”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

This bodega has been recommended by my Malagueño colleague. El Pimpi is an iconic place, located in typical Andalusian house from XVIII century. Bodega welcomed lots of intellectuals, artists and Spanish celebrities. Usually it is overcrowded, particularly on Friday or Saturday evening. I would recommend you to visit this place at noon or early afternoon to enjoy the charming atmosphere.
Most of guests are complaining on quality of food. Well, you should know that El Pimpi is more a bar than a restaurant. It is a place for meeting with friends and chatting while drinking beer or wine in the hot summer evenings and enjoy tapas of ham or good cheese. You should not miss tasting the sweet wine Moscatel or Malaga Virgen, typical wines from Malaga region.
If you prefer fine dining, it is better to choose another place, otherwise you will be disappointed. El Pimpi is bodega based on Spanish tradition and way of living. If you want to feel real atmosphere of this coastal city and mingle with the locals, El Pimpi is the right choice. It would be nice to make a reservation particular during the weekend.

“Nice place with average food”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

The Finnish travel magazine called Matkalehti recommended several restaurants in Malaga an El Pimpi was one of them. The restaurant looks nice with large terrace. We ate inside because it was not so hot.

We took two-course-meals. My husband took seafood paella as a starter and fish of the day for the main course. Paella tasted ok but it was awfully dry. It was also served a bit too cold. The fish was a big disappointment. Few pieces of some small and tasteless fishes was served with salad that was swimming in vinegar.

My starter was great. It was cold melon soup. Perfect for the warm day as it was. Then I took chicken breast. It did not taste anything really and side chips were raw.

The cappuccino afterwards was one of the best in Spain. It was served with huge whipped cream topping that was great for dessert but not necessary for breakfast cup of coffee.

With one beer and a bottle of still water it took us about 23 euros if I remember correctly.

This place is not for the babies because there was no highchair available. The service was ok but it took ages and they did not understand when we were asking for a highchair.

“A gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013 via mobile

I wish I could write a bad review so that this place stays semi hidden and not completely overrun by tourists but the food is too good to have the world share in it!

At the end of the day, to sit and savor the flavours erupting from the dishes they serve should eliminate any poor feelings anyone might have about this place.

I left so full I literally could not walk... I couldn't stop eating!

I ordered a plate of calf cheeks in red wine 11€ was very reasonable to me.

There was great entertainment and the atmosphere was gorgeous.

The servers were expedient! If you sit and watch them it could seem hectic but if you're enjoying your food and company as much as we were, the swept in and out unnoticed promptly with everything we requested.

This restaurant might be the very reason I came to Spain!!

“Old Favourite”

Cannot fault the ambience, food and wine. Can be quite busy but its a place not to be missed. The seating area outside is great for watching the world go by.

“Wonderful ambience but average food.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 13, 2013

We went with some visitors from Norway. Due to the high cost of living in Norway, anywhere in Spain seems reasonably priced.
There is no doubt that the place is full of character and has a good feel.
However the food we had, various dishes were average and very expensive.
Nice to say we have been there, we would probably go for a drink again with other guests, but not to eat.
