We passed this church at least twice a day during our stay and always stopped to admire it. The colours and detail are breathtaking. When open - watch out for beggars who congregate at the doors and gates. An unfortunate sign of the times.
The church is situated next to the Malaga Cathedral and its most distinguishing feature is its portal. It is of Gothic-Elizabethan style.
I love to visit churches and this one is beautiful as is a lot of Malaga churches the one in front of the crystal museum is spectacular
Behind the Carmen Thyssen Museum, one will find the beautiful Sacred Heart Church. It is relatively new, being built by the Jesuits in 1920, and the architect was the famous Fernando Guerrero Strachan, who built many of Malaga’s most elegant buildings. The style of the church is Neo-Gothic and was inspired by the cathedrals of Toledo and Burgos. The façade of the church has two tall towers with spires. In the center of the facade there is a wonderful rose window.
The church has three naves and over these is a very unusual vault that is octagonal in shape. It has a large octagonal star that is decorated with stained glass. The main altarpiece was the work of the artist Adrian Risueño. There is a sculpture of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by the artist Antonio Maumon, done in 1940. Beside the main altar are two large paintings which represent San Ignacio de Loyola and San Francisco de Borja.
The second level has arcades where people can hear Mass. Above the arcades are beautiful stained glass windows.
