“Fabulous Hotel, a little out of the way though”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 29, 2013 via mobile

We've just come back from spending 2 weeks in the Gran Hotel Elba Estepona, and I have to say that overall we were very very pleased.

The rooms were very spacious, very clean and had a nice size balcony. Staff were always friendly and courteous, and like other reviews have mentioned there is plenty of space in and around the hotel and you never end up fighting for a sun bed.

We didn't actually eat in the restaurant, although we did eat breakfast from the buffet every morning. There was a very large selection to choose from and food was always fresh.

If I were to pick out some small negatives. The hotel wifi is good when it works, however we just couldn't get connected in our rooms. It would work in the corridors outside our room though.

The kids club isn't very active in promoting activities for kids.

The only other thing I'd mention is the location. Unfortunately the hotel is a fair walk from the main areas of Estepona. There is a Super Market across the road for essentials, but if you want to go out for evening meals, you'll either have to get a taxi or like us, hire a car. On the plus side though, the hotel is located 2 minutes from the A7 motorway if you are driving.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2013

We recently stayed at the Gran Hotel Elba and had a lovely time. A big spacious hotel, but it doesn't feel like you're in a busy hotel and there is more than enough space for everyone to have their own space. We received a nice welcome by a lovely lady in reception who couldn't have been more helpful, giving us plenty of info about the hotel and its activities, restaurants etc etc. We had a room on the same level as reception and when required we took a lift or stairs to the pool level which was -2. It got me thinking that if we had very small kids the -2 level would be ideal, as there are some rooms on that level (garden level) that are located close to a small kids pool, so if you had a room here and small kids, they could take a nap in the room and you could still take some sun in the garden right outside your door, which would be ideal. Our son was a little older so we headed for the main pool, very enjoyable it was too, beds around the pool do tend to be snapped up quickly but there is still plenty of garden space so it's unlikely you'll be without a place to lounge in the sun. Also there is an adults only area on the 0 level, if you prefer a bit of peace and quiet. This area is fine, its a quiet space but to be fair if the hotel has gone to the trouble of making it adults only, then I think it could be made more glamorous with maybe lanterns or music or something as its a great extra to have in a hotel. That is only a tiny criticism and it should not put you off booking the hotel.
The breakfast room is plenty big for the size of the hotel and even in August, we had no problem getting a table for breakfast any morning of our stay, service was sharp and food was refreshed as quickly as it was gone, plenty of variety every morning, everything you would expect at breakfast, didn't see any strawberries which was a tiny disappointment, but plenty variety of sweet cakes, croissants, meats, eggs etc etc. On the morning of our departure, the breakfast room opened promptly at 7.30am with everything ready, hot coffee brought immediately, so full marks again there.
We didn't avail of the all inclusive package but may do next time we stay there, we had dinner (buffet) at the hotel one night, there was plenty of variety of food, husband and son enjoyed it more than I did, but then I am a picky eater. That was an international buffet, but there are others like Italian and Asian etc on different nights so again plenty of variety if you were going all inclusive for a week or so. Note, men must wear full length trousers in some of the restaurants so remember to bring some! Saying that, the hotel is very laid back and not in the slightest bit stuffy at all. All staff we met, from receptionist, waiters to lifeguards were all perfectly nice people.
Onto our room, which I would say was definitely of 5 star standard, similar to other 5 stars in the general area. Plenty of room for an extra bed for our son. Contrary to previous reviews, we found the housekeeping staff most prompt and returned from breakfast every morning to find our room cleaned, this never happened in any hotel I've ever stayed in before so full marks to housekeeping for that one! There is a spacious balcony, with a completely uninterrupted sea view as the hotel is right on the beach, our room was 345, ask for that or nearby if this is what you require. Also this room was the quietest hotel room I've ever stayed in, honestly, the only sound we heard at night was that of the waves crashing on the beach below. The only problem I could see with the rooms was that there were only 2 chairs on the balcony, for such a big balcony it could have also easily fitted 2 nice sun loungers which is what you'd expect in a hotel like this, so that would be something for the hotel to consider in the future.
Regarding the location, it is about 5 mins drive from estepona, 20 minutes drive from p. banus, regardless of what people say, that's how long it is, we've been going to this area for 20 years+ so know the area well, it's a bit of a journey to get everywhere, again no big deal, it was a minor problem, made up for by everything else.
Finally, the hotel go to a lot of trouble to provide nightly entertainment in the garden, normally this finishes 11.30/12.00 so if you're the type that retires early you might want to avoid the rooms directly overhead this area, I can't say anything about the entertainment as we didn't bother with it, preferring most nights to had out from the hotel. There is also plenty of activity for kids with a supervised kids club, some sort of games room, table tennis etc none of which we tried so can't discuss them. Also available..Water aerobics, Zumba and other activities if you're an adult who bores of sunbathing, we didn't go for any of these as we were too busy sizzling in the sun, but its there if required! All round a lovely week, no major complaints, wouldn't have any problem going back there, might even book a trip back soon!

Room Tip: Rooms at either end of hotel would be quieter, choose a room on garden level for convenience if you...

Just got back from a week in the hotel with my husband and 11 year old daughter. The hotel is lovely, staff very friendly and a very warm welcome was received.
Our room was lovely; spacious, clean, with a lovely big bathroom, robes and slippers etc. The room was just above where the evening entertainment takes place so could be a little noisy until about 11.30, but we quite enjoyed being lulled to sleep with the singers and as our daughter is 11, this didnt bother us at all. I am sure if it was a problem, the staff would have been happy to move us to another room (you may wish to avoid these rooms if you have young children)
We had orginally booked on a bed and breakfast basis , but upgraded to all inclusive on arrival - I would recommend this as it worked out very good value for money at 52 euros per person, per day and my daughter was free.
We are not big drinkers, but when you consider lunch, dinner , a bottle of wine and maybe a cocktail in the evening + tea / coffee and soft drinks all day, the upgrade was definitely worthwhile. We also got one free entry per day into the SPA, which was lovely and well worth a daily visit (ideal to get out of the midday sun)
Always plenty of sunbeds so no panic to be up early and grounds are beautifully maintained. I would recommend having a car if staying at the hotel as the location is a little isolated (suited us as we like quiet), but it is just off the A7 , so easy access to any of the costal towns and villages.
All in all , we have had a really nice relaxing week. I was worried beforehand as some of the reviews I read are not great , but I really couldnt fault it from arrival to departure. I would highly recommend the hotel + the upgrade to all inclusive.

Room Tip: Avoid courtyard rooms overlooking evening entertainment if you have young children or like an early...

My family and I discovered this hotel in 2006. Boasting five stars it delivered fantastic accommodation at a price in line with promised levels of service and luxury.
This was delivered in every way, with courtesy extended from every member of staff.
How has this changed in the six subsequent annual visits? It hasn't.
A sure sign of good employer is the staff retention levels over this period. Whilst Spain obviously has it's own employment difficulties today that cannot be considered in the way that this hotel has kept and promoted all of those members of staff as well as bring in new, equally capable, employees.
A warm welcome upon every arrival reminds us that we are there to be looked after.
Today the hotel has evolved to cater far more for families, with a kids club that keeps the youngsters out of their parents hair for a while each day.
This should not be confused with a loud environment of screaming kids and constant interruption by hollering parents. The clientele tend to be a likeminded bunch and the bars and evening entertainment are both civilised and contained.
The pools are exquisite and the gate onto the beach makes for a wonderful opportunity to stretch your legs and have a wonder in the surf.
The initial beach area is somewhat blighted by significant boulders which can cause concerns with swimming, but a couple of hundred yards either way and this problem disappears. The positive side to this is that the beach immediately upon the hotel is not a local tourist attraction and is therefore more tranquil.
If you have a car then you are easily placed for trips in the vicinity as there is not a plethora of bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. However, Estepona is only a five minute taxi ride away, which are on instant availability from the hotel lobby.
If you like to spend quality time with your family, over leisurely meals with a huge choice of cuisine from either the buffet or restaurants then Hotel Elba is waiting for you.
If you are looking to be constantly entertained with a trail of reps to boot, then you should be looking elsewhere.
I don't believe I've even touched the surface with this review but conclude by saying, a returning guest must be a satisfied one.

I really don't understand why there are have been so many negative comments/ reviews about this hotel. My family and I found everything about the hotel to be beyond satisfactory. Service was great and very prompt. Our room was ENORMOUS. Thankfully, it was always cleaned and left spotless. In addition to this, our cleaner also always made sure to leave us with a very generous supply of toiletries and newly washed towels.

The outdoor pool is very well-maintained and HUGE. One end of the pool is is very shallow, which is ideal for kids while the other end is deeper (1.4 meters) and this is normally where the adults swim. There are plenty of sun beds; however, I must warn you that the cushioned ones are always quickly snagged by some guests early in the morning (they dump their towels on them as a way of reserving them for their own use). However, this shouldn't really be an issue as there are plenty of other sunbeds (without cushions) around.

Breakfast was impressive - there are plenty of choices ranging from fresh fruit, Spanish pastries, yoghurts, savory items (such as eggs, bacon, etc.), and made-to-order omelettes.
We only ate at the buffet dinner once (Mexican night) but it was worth it. While it may seem expensive for 30 euros per person, all diners were inundated with so many dishes to choose from. And they were all delicious too.

Entertainment is provided on a nightly basis, with the exception of Sunday evenings, and we found the shows to be okay. The flamenco dance, however, was very entertaining.
Take note though that the hotel is nowhere near any restaurants or shops. I think it's a must for you to rent a car when staying here; however, the hotel is only a short drive to the actual town square, the public beaches, and Old Estepona. As a matter of fact, my family and I actually appreciated its distance from the tourist traps.

Now the only thing that I truly disliked about this hotel was the lack wifi connection. The signal is, unfortunately, only available in areas close to reception which we found to be very disappointing. Hopefully, there are plans in place to fix this problem as we definitely plan to return here in the near future.

We returned this morning from a week's stay in the Gran Hotel Elba, Estepona. First of all to start with the negatives. Don't panic if you've already booked a holiday here, the negatives are few and not terrible.
To start with the hotel does have a private beach, but it's not sandy more fine shingle and the coast is rocky but the sea is clear and nice to swim in. This wasn't a problem for us as we're more pool people anyway, but could be a disapointment if you're searching for long sandy beaches.
The next issue is, it's very expensive to eat and drink in the hotel, so if you haven't booked on an all inclusive or full board basis it may be worth considering this and try to upgrade when you check in. Also there are no tea or coffee making facilities in the room, which when you consider it's about 8 euros for two coffees this would make quite a difference to the daily holiday budget.
Despite what is said on the travel agent website, not all rooms are sea view and the first room we checked into definitely wasn't but the hotel did move us on the second day
The last and biggest drawback is the actual location of the hotel, though the address is Estepona the hotel is not within walking distance of Estepona itself, its about a 7 minute ride in a taxi, costing between 7 and 9 euros each way, depending on the time of day you're going in. Even if a long walk is not daunting for you it's simply not possible as a large part of the route is along a dual carriage way with no pavement. Again this was an issue for us as we had planned to eat out most evenings as we were only bed and breakfast, so had to add approx fifteen euros to the bill each time we went out.
On the plus side: The rooms and en-suites are of an excellent size and very comfortable, the view of the bay from the sea-view rooms is really lovely.
The pool areas are busy but sun beds are always available, though if like us you use the adult only terrace this was always quiet and peaceful, once again with stunning views across the bay.
Food is good but not excellent, the buffet lunches and dinners being much better value than the a la carte dining. Bar snacks are also available and of a reasonable standard. Though as mentioned before eating and drinking is pricey
The staff were very friendy and always willing to help with any questions. We had late night flights on our last day, originally we had hoped to be able to use our room till later in the day but as it had be re-allocated we had to vacate by 12, but we were able to use a secure area for our luggage (accessible whenever we wanted) and use the hotel facilities for as long as we needed including use of the showers etc in the Spa.
If you do go into Estepona, go on a Saturday evening the place really comes to life and there are some really lovely little beach shacks barbecuing fresh sardines which are absolutely delicious
Overall we really enjoyed our holiday, it was our first holiday without our daughters for twenty years, and we felt apart from the mix up with the room to begin with that we had got exactly what we expected. We probably wouldn't go back to Estepona again for no other reason than we try and go somewhere different on each holiday, but I would recommend the hotel.

Room Tip: Ensure you have booked a sea view.
