4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2014

Pulling up to the hotel I was a little concerned as it was right next to the freeway however once inside the hotel you forget all about the outside world and just enjoy the peaceful surroundings. With a seafood restaurant and another steak restaurant you can't go wrong, the fresh seabass was delicious. The gym is of a decent size and 24 hour access is convenient. The gardens are perfectly manicured with ample space so you are not on top of one another. The room is somewhat basic but clean, with all expected amenities and small balconies to enjoy the pink sunsets.. All in all a lovely, restful resort with all one needs to enjoy a couple of days of relaxation..

Lovely hotel in beautiful gardens and right on the beach. Friendly and helpful staff, food excellent although pricey. Lovely room. Tip if you book direct on their website and they give you the option to upgrade at the hotel, if available, for a reduced rate take it. We didnt and the upgrade was 60 euros per night for sea view as opposed to 34 online. Would definitely go back

4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 27, 2014

We stayed in this hotel one week in March and choose it because of the heated swimming Pool which is a rarity in Marbella at this time of the year.
First the positive points: about the hotel itself, we have only praises: beautiful, large rooms. Large marble bathrooms with double sinks, separate toilets, separate shower and bath. Impeccable service, utterly kind and competent staff, beautiful gardens and great private beach (partly on the sand and partly on grass covered terraces, which is great for the ones who hate having sand sticking in the sun cream and the book they are reading). The terrace for breakfast has great views. The buffet breakfast was absolutely delicious with very tasteful hot and cold dishes and a huge variety of bread and buns. Nice bar and comfortable lounges.
The heated pool is REALLY well heated and is quite large so it allowed long swimming sessions, but it is most of the time in the shade (pretty cold when you get out of the water).
In March the hotel was not very busy, and was very quiet.
The only weak point of this hotel is its location, close to Estepona, although not walking distance. Marbella should not be mentioned under their name, because this hotel cannot pretend to be a Marbella Hotel. It is located in front of a beautiful beach. But you can not walk to anywhere. You can not even make a substantial walk along the beach. No "paseo maritimo" in the neighborhood. You definitely need a car, otherwise you are trapped. We had a rental car but it is a pity, when you are on vacation and can never just WALK to anywhere. And you miss the charm of these evening walks along the sea to go have dinner somewhere close by (like you do in Marbella). Estepona, off season, is definitely gloomy and you do not feel like driving 20-25 minutes (one way) every night to go dine in Marbella or Puerto Banus.
The place where the hotel sits can be quite windy, and so it may be difficult to find a sheltered place where to read or sunbathe in the gardens. We had a room facing the sea, but our balcony, covered, NEVER got any sun, which is a pity in the spring. We finally had a very limited view because the hotel is built in U shape with parts of the buildings blocking the view to the right and the left. Most rooms share this situation because of the orientation of the hotel. Certain rooms may be better than others in this respect. Try to get a room with a West orientation.
In conclusion, you have to decide for yourself if the location is a problem or not. If you want to mostly rest and stay at the hotel, eat there and enjoy the beach, this place is fantastic.

Dear Caroline022

First and foremost thank you for having stayed at the Kempinski Hotel Bahia in March for one week and thank you for having enjoyed our hotel, facilities and services. Your comments are shared among all team members and it is always gratifying to see satisfied and happy guests. I guess the Paseo Maritimo is something that many people thought about as one is currently being built and within two years it will connect Estepona town to Laguna Village. There are plans to go further, we will see.
We hope welcoming you back in the near future with maybe a better weather
Thank you and kind regards

The Kempinski Hotel Bahia may not look like a five star hotel from its location on a busy main road into the uninspiring town of Estepona, itself a throwback to the days of the bargain package break venue to the Costa del Sol, but rest assured that it most certainly is.

Our group came out of season when the wind was blowing hard, the spa was closed for refurbishment, as was the Italian themed restaurant designed for sunnier times later in the year. But hey! we were in Spain so it was the best of the local cuisine that we wanted not faux Italian.

From the moment we walked in we were treated as valued guests, although I was the only one in my party who had stayed here before and that was a long time back. Our rooms were spacious and scrupulously clean with a well lighted area to work from and a pleasant balcony gazing out across the pool area and the Mediterranean. All rooms in this Kempinski have views across the sea although some views are better than others so book one on one of the upper floors.

Our group was spending a weekend playing golf at two nearby courses with transport there arranged by the hotel. After a terrific breakfast, and the buffet available is really top drawer, we headed off to take on two really tough tracks at Finca Cortesin, well nigh unplayable on the day we arrived because of the strength of the wind, and the superb Valderrama, home of the 1997 Ryder Cup. The fact that I needed nothing to eat until I returned to the hotel for dinner speaks volumes for both the quality and quantity of its breakfast.

We ate one meal in the main dining room, which was almost too much with appetisers, two large meat courses as well as soup and deserts, but well presented and equally well prepared. Our second night was in the private dining room up on the top floor which was glorious. Wonderful views, terrific steaks and some great regional wines. It does not come cheap but is well worth paying for such a terrific experience.

Now if only I could find my shoes that I left behind after a rather late night having taken a cab down into Estepona to sample a local Spanish bar rather than one rammed full of, often over-loud and over the limit, British tourists.

I know That I took them off when I got back in but I cannot remember packing them and they were not in my case when I got home. If the Kempinski can find them for me then I am prepared to give them another star for service above and beyond the call of customer care!

Room Tip: Be on floor six or above to get the best view of the sea and the extensive palm planted grounds.

A colleague and I were here in December of 2013. We stayed for a week. We had business in Gibraltar and didn't want to stay there, so after researching hotels online, we took a chance and stayed at the Kempinski. We both loved it! My room overlooked the back of the hotel so I had a view of the gardens and the sea. It was extremely quiet. I know that some other reviewers have said that you can hear the road in the front, but I didn't hear any road traffic. Again, maybe because my room faced the back. As for the room itself, it was very pretty, done up in soft colors and furniture. Everything was in perfect condition. The bathroom was lovely as well. (BTW, I am very picky - I like staying at the Four Seasons, Ritz, Intercontinental, and beautiful boutique hotels when I travel for pleasure. So the fact that I liked this place says a lot). The restaurant was wonderful! Breakfast consisted of a lovely European style buffet (tons of cheeses, breads, pastries, meats, eggs, waffles, fruits, cereals, sweets... the choices were endless and the presentation very nicely done). The restaurant overlooked the back of the hotel and had lovely views of the sea beyond. We also had dinner in the restaurant a few times and it was excellent (I am selective when it comes to my choice of restaurants as well). The lobby was beautifully done up with a big tree (we stayed the week before Christmas) and was large with high ceilings and glass doors that opened onto a very large deck. There is a big open bar in the lobby with comfortable seating. We spent a few evenings sitting here with a glass of wine after a long hard day at work in Gibraltar. I think that the one thing that really made this hotel stand out was the wonderful staff throughout the hotel - at the reception area, the bar, and the restaurant. They were exceptionally nice and very friendly. And finally, the hotel cat Frederico was adorable and very friendly as well! I will be going back to Gibraltar on business and will definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Stay in a room at the back of the hotel, facing the sea. If you cannot afford to stay in an ocean f...

Stayed for 8 days in feb. Lovely buildings and staff were great. Had some issues with noise as they are upgrading rooms. However they moved us twice. Reception could not understand why we would not accept a room with drilling noise. Reception staff need to be more customer friendly and understand customer needs. Once we got settled it was a great place with great views and supa dupa breakfasts....
