“The Fawlty Towers of Tarifa”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2010

The hotel was well located - room very small but OK furnished - noisy at night through to early hours because of outdoor bars opposite, clearing up, and early morning bin emptying. "Service" from the proprietrix was as unfriendly, grudging, and unsmiling as we've ever encountered. And the shop assistant in the bookshop next door must have been her sister - wantonly aggressive. I'm not sure tourists are welcome in those establishments. No parking - we found our own way to an open air car park near the church. A restaurant called the mad cow (Spanish equivalent - something loco) was fantastic and reasonable

After reading the posted reviews, I was somewhat hesitant to go so far and stay in a place that ultimately I knew about relatively very little. However, I decided to take the step and leave the New York City rat-race with an open mind and with very little expectation. And I'm glad I did.

After a very long trip, I landed at Malaga's international airport and took a private luxury coach (bus) to Tarifa, leaving me in the center of town. Walking through narrow, cobble-stone streets, I was greeted with smiles and pointed in the direction of the hotel. I arrived at the hotel, which was a short distance away and entered a new world. The establishment is very chic: warm colors, Spanish and Moroccan influences pervade throughout the establishment and the decor in general is meticulous and well thought-out.

This place was hip, the staff welcoming and attentive. The rooms were comfortable by New York standards. Bear in mind that this is a boutique hotel, not a Ramada Inn nor a Hilton chain. So, what you find is charm and beauty not prefab rooms with an X-Box and TiVo.

Whether you come here to experience the exoticism of Moroccan influence (Africa is a half-hour ferry ride away) or the excitement of the best windsurfing in the world--this is the place to be. I was lucky enough to meet the owners of the hotel, two great hosts. They made me feel at home, telling me about how this hotel was their labor of love; rebuilt from the ruins of a convent, from the ground up.

Come with an open mind and find your inner self in this mystical place.

We booked this hotel based on a recommendation from Rick Steve's and looking at their website. Wow, I've never stayed in a room that small before. Also, be prepared to stay up later than you want, if they have a bar crowd. No hiding here.

Room was clean. Service was very friendly. The proprietress was incredibly nice. From what I saw of Tarifa, this is near the top. Compared to more competitive areas, this would not survive. Also, be wary that they don't have air conditioning. This was definitely a problem during our stay as they fan they provide did not cut it.

On an unrelated note. Don't bother with Tarifa unless you're a wind-surfer or going to Morocco. Pretty boring place.

We stayed at Posada La Sacristia for 5 nights at the end of August 09. We were sold the apartments a couple of months earlier as a 2 beds apartment. We realised the apartment was actually a one semi-nice on-suite double + a corridor/lounge with 2 singles (pull-out beds). The other space available was a tiny kitchenette, not usable, dirty and without a proper dining table. The sponge in the sink was disgusting, so were the cloths and tea-towels available. The whole apartment was infested by ants (and we didn't cook or take food in the apartment).
Also – the drainage pipes were awfully smelly… we had to keep the toilet room closed at all time as the stench was unbearable.
Very noisy at night, as the access to the other rooms/apartments in the block was a staircase where you would almost have to walk through the one bedroom to go to the upper floors.
Breakfast was very basic and boring. Staff was friendly though.
The website does not show the rooms properly and you will be given whatever it's available. They charge a small fortune to stay there, but it is definitely not worth it! There are so many other hotels in Tarifa, where you can pay less and have a better room, or at least void disappointments.
Also - the Posada La Sacrestia was marketed as a SPA, they do not have one. I asked for a treatments list and the girl at reception looked stunned by the request. I asked for a simple pedicure, they would not do it... ??? They do have someone who gives massages; I wonder how professional the masseur/masseuse would have been! At that point, we didn't bother.

Tarifa is small and perfectly formed and so is this hotel , located in the heart of the old town , the teeny tiny-ness of it is very cute but its very clean , beautifully presented and the staff are lovely , would have no hesitation staying there again or recommending it

As other reviews have stated, the hotel decor is based on zen and relaxation. To that end, there are no TVs or clocks, but that was not a problem for us, as we simply set a blackberry alarm.

During our November stay, which is definitely the off-season in Tarifa, we had very positive experience. The female receptionist/bartender could not have been friendlier or more accomodating with everything we needed in the hotel as well as in arranging taxi service for us and providing restaurant recommodations. The bar/lounge area was not at all loud, and though there were a few (2-3) smokers at times, it wasn't intrusive. The wireless internet available in that area was also a huge plus. While the bathroom was on the small side, the shower was lovely, and the room/mattress was quite comfortable. We did not experience the difficulties with temperature or noise that others have mentioned, though several times we did see the gentleman who everyone assumes is the owner-- he certainly doesn't do the staff any favors and misses perfect opportunities to make the guests feel more attended to.
