“good german pub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 14, 2013

Stopped here for lunch during a one day layover on a Baltic cruise. The food was very good and there were a couple of lunch special plates. We sampled several of the beers brewed on site and they were quite good, particularily the wiesen. The service was a bit slow and inattentive, but nothing worth getting worried about. A pleasant stop on a day of shopping and sight-seeing.

“Authentic german pub”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 4, 2013

We visited Kieler Brauerei during our 4 hour stop in Kiel on a Color Line cruise from Norway.

After a rather dissapointing visit at a boring restaurant, we took a taxi up tothe old town to see the Brauerei. Since we had already had breakfast, we only ordered a 10L barrel of their brew. The beer was ok, but the ambience was terrific! We were lucky to be there on the same day as two German soccerteams were in som kind of playoff, and therefore the pub was full of germans who were dancing on tables, singing and playing on an accordion.

Overall this was a really fun experience, and when you can buy 10L of beer for 6 euro, it's definetly worth it!

“Another visit”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 23, 2013

I have often been here and it is normally around lunch time. I find it a very nice place to sit out in the sun (it had been the first real spring day after a very long cold winter). We had been clearing the flat as we are unfortunatly moving from Kiel and heading a little further east to Stockelsdorf near Lübeck, so I hope to be doing reviews fron there in the future. We had nothing in the house so after a trip across the fantastic Kiel market (is there a better one in Germany?) I said let us walk past the Opera house along the lake and into the "Altstadt" and sit i the sun and enjoy a beer. We found a nice table just opposite the entrance and almost immediatly a very helpful waitress appeared to take our order, I always drink there wonderful herb, unfiltered Pilsner beer here but they do have quite a large selection. My partner ordered an "Alsterwasser" (beer shandy) We perused the menu, though I already knew what I was going to eat as it is my favorite here, brat sauerherring and bratkartoffeln. My partner ordered the labskaus with fried egg (very runny so ask for a well done one if you don't like German spiegel eier) a rolled pickled herring and a pickled gurkin. We sat and the tables quickly filled up, the ferry from Gothenburg was in so there was a chatter in Swedish all around, with a smattering of English, Kiel is a very cosmopolitan City. The food arrived and as normal was very tasty, the food here is never spectacular, but it is solid, rustical and tasty, it is never going to get a Michelin star but it will attract those that want a hearty meal at a fair and reasonable price.
I have only sat inside once and this was with friends a few years ago, and it has a real beer hall charicture and off course the brewing equipment and if you're lucky the brewers working at your trade. I can immagine that it would be the perfect place for the young (and not so young to celibrate stag and hen parties).
All in all a very honest, well run establishment, that serves well cooked traditional North German food, good beer at fair prices. We shall return.
