“Absolutely worthwhile entering.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

There is an impressive exhibition going on the church about the killing of (mentally) handicapped children during the nazi regime.

“Join a tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

This is a beautiful Dom but there are no English leaflets or boards to help one understand the Cathedral. There is a 2 euro charge which is very reasonable for taking photographs. My husband managed to tag on to a German tour group and got into the Paradise chapel which is kept locked. He said it was wonderful

“Wonderful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 16, 2013

So much to see inside the cathedral and do not miss the beautiful 13th century wise and foolish virgins, the statue of St Maurice or the very moving Barlach memorial to the first world war (depicts the grimness of war and this was very controversial at the time).

“Otto the Great's burial place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2012

Otto the Great, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, and his first wife, the Anglo-Saxon princess Eadgyth (Editha) are buried here which I find quite impressive.

“A concentrated dose of European history...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

The Magdeburg Dom is a beautiful cathedral that stands by the Elbe. If nothing really stands out from the outside, rather dull, once you get inside, you're on for a eye treat. The nave is majestic and its large windows let in a fantastic light. The first Holy Roman Emperor, Otto I, is buried there. As such, he ruled over most of what is western Europe today. The whole statues are beautifully preserved, and you need to make sure to take a lot of time to closely inspect every column, as everyone tells a story. The inner courtyard of the cloister is also an eye candy. Magdeburg is lucky enough to have two superb cloisters, the other being the Our Lady, now a museum of Art. Before you leave, do not miss the Paradize Gate, famous for its 10 Virgins, and the Judensau, one of a handful left in Europe. On the way out, try to find Frau Schröder in the shop, she is a mine of information concerning the Cathedral and a great character that will tell you all there is to know about the art and history of Magdeburg.
