“You got for the atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2014

Sitting under an umbrella, eating a giant sundae, watching the world go by, what's wrong with that? A fascinating old DDR building and delicious icecreams. Sure you'll get cheaper elsewhere but it‘s all about the ambience.

“Very good ice cream parlour”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

The new modernised interior lacks everything which might have been left over from the glorious days of the Pinguin. However, this is not necessarily a bad thing as DDR wasn't the most charming place on earth. Today's interior uses cow fur decoration and provides seating on chairs, sofas and stools. I suppose you'll find your preferred seating vehicle. The colours make it a warm place which works well in winter. During summer, you might prefer the outside seating anyway. The service was very quick and consistently friendly. Importantly, the ice cream was very good. The portion size is huge, but the flavour of excitement that was linked to place is completely lost. However, it is still a very good ice cream. Specifically, you want to look at the counter and order some scoops (these come with some decorations and whipped cream) rather than one of the sundaes. They've also created the penguin ice cream (which is based on a very traditional DDR style: ice cream from cream with chocolate topping; the modern day version ends up in creamy ice cream with a thick swirl of chocolate if scooped properly). The place is very different from what it used to be, but the new Pinguin is a very good ice cream parlour with friendly staff.

“Was spectacular in the olden days, now just another ice cream place”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 23, 2012 via mobile

We have fond memories of this place, having eaten here many times during the eighties. However, nowadays, none of the charms it once possessed is left. The sundaes are huge, but nothing that shines or is memorable.

The cheesecake lacked sugar, while the iced chocolate was quite good - very dense.

The ice cream was okay, but nothing special.

We went here on a hot summers day and I noticed that staff left the cream dispenser on the counter. Leftover whipped cream stayed in the nozzle and I am not exactly sure if it gets discarded once the next portion is served.

I was unimpressed - this will not be a place I will return to. It's glorious days are clearly over.
