“Wonderful stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 27, 2012

The Hotel Kipping is a wonderful base for your stay in Dresden. Only a block from the train station, it's quiet, comfortable, and has the best breakfast (included in the cost) we've ever encountered. If we are ever back, this will be where we will be staying!

My one night side trip to Dresden was made perfect by a stay at this hotel. I always try to choose historic lodgings in or near the old cities of Europe. This was perfect. I left my bag in the train station locker on arrival and went straight to the old town on the tram with my 2-day Dresden Pass. Did the Rick Steves walking tour and visited the Albertinum Museum. Returned by tram to the HBH to pick up my bag and take a very short walk to the hotel. There was even a sign pointing the way! Unlike many small hotels or pensions, there was air conditioning, an elevator and a delightful restaurant. My room was on the top floor, facing west and very quiet. Bath had shower, high quality towels, soap, hair dryer. Excellent water pressure, temperature control. Bed very comfortable. Ample storage. Very good buffet breakfast. And all for 74 euros!
I had a very good dinner there with local wine. This would be my first choice for a repeat stay. Wifi was free, but I had to use my computer in the dining room as the top floor was just too far. That was the only negative.

Room Tip: Lower floors probably have best wifi reception. West side probably quietest.

Hotel Kipping escaped the ravages of the attack on Dresden during WWII, and its history goes back to 1884. The building has been a private residence, a boarding house for young women, and a place where baby clothes and cotton diapers were made. Today it is an outstanding hotel owned and operated by the grandsons of Albert Kipping, who bought the building in 1932.

An elevator is available to take you to the upper rooms, which are modern and clean. The bathroom was modern and of a pretty good size

The breakfast buffet (included in the room rate), was filled with German breads and rolls, scrambled eggs, fruits and vegetables, cheeses and meats. It was plentiful. We ate dinner in the hotel's restaurant and it was delicious also.

The hotel's location is perfect for a walk on the pedestrian street with its many stores and restaurants, as well as being close to the Old Town and its historical sights.

Room Tip: We had a corner room on the 3rd floor...#25 Nice views and very roomy.

The Hotel Kipping is a renovated mansion with a lot of character about a block from the central train station. It has parking in the back and a restaurant on the premises. The room we had was clean, spacious and very comfortable. The walls are thick and the noise level inside the hotel is kept to a minimum. The renovations were tastefully done and we were very happy with our room (I wish I could have explored the other rooms in the hotel!). The bathroom was nothing special, however- we had a shower stall, but with good water pressure and plenty of hot water. There are no toiletries- just a hand soap dispenser at the sink. The room also does not have an iron, coffee maker or refrigerator. There is a flat screen TV with many channels and a phone. The double bed is two twins put together in a single bed frame. Each bed has it own duvet (not down but warm and comfortable). The pillows were down and heavenly.

There is free internet service (you need to get codes at the front desk) but it was very weak and came in and out. I don't think you can really count on it.

There is no view. We were on the top floor. You can see office buildings, the train station, etc. but nothing very glamorous. The neighborhood was wealthy and full of impressive mansions at one point but the war changed much of it- now you see stately homes in between characterless apartment blocks. It is in a residential area that is well kept.

There is a casino just down the block, close to the train station (Casino Royal) and we did hear (?drunk) people shouting at each other as they were leaving very early in the morning but it didn't last long. We walked around the neighborhood and it is very safe- mostly young families. The hotel is also within walking distance of the pedestrian-only shopping district and it took us about 30 minutes to walk to the Elbe- so it is very central. We didn't try any of the trams but they are within easy access.

One of the best parts is the breakfast buffet. Very plentiful: cold cuts, scrambled eggs, meat balls, hearty bread rolls, yoghurts, cold cereals, donuts, juices, jams, fresh fruit salad, etc. All freshly made and very tasty. I think the jams are home made. It was the best breakfast buffet we had had in Germany (and we were traveling quite a bit this trip to different areas).

The fellow who checked us in spoke English (as did others at the hotel). He reminded me a little of Mr. Fawlty of Fawlty Towers, if you catch my drift. All the others we came into contact with were very welcoming and helpful. One of the women who sets up the breakfast buffet was exceptionally welcoming.

Overall we have fond memories of our stay at Hotel Kipping (we were there for only 2 nights however) and would stay again if we ever find ourselves in Dresden again.

I really enjoyed my stay at The Kipping. The location is central but also out of the way enough to be nice and peaceful. The room was spotless and the linen and towels were excellent quality, crisp and sparkling white. I've stayed in 4 star hotels with lower standards. The building itself is very characterful and the high ceilings and huge doors make for interesting surroundings. The staff were smiling and courteous the entire time. The breakfast was all of the usual cereals, fruit, meat and cheese etc (also hot scrambled eggs and sausages), but also specialities of the region which were unusual but fun to try. Overall, a lovely experience. I'll certainly be staying again.

Hotel Kipping is a well located hotel if you do not need to be directly located in Old Town. It's across from the main train station, very quiet, and easy access by tram to all locations. The trams are cheap and easy to get around town. The hotel is in a beautiful old building, looking slightly worn around the edges. Rooms are large and clean, but dated. We had a desk space in our room which was nice and plenty of storage for our things. Breakfast offered many options and was very good. There is a grocery, bakery, and butcher shop directly across the street. It did feel a bit like a senior citizens home while we stayed.

Room Tip: I'm not really sure that there is a good room for view here. Not really a scenic location. The...

Hotel is located near the main train station. To reach the main tourist center, it's a less than a mile, flat walk through a pedestrian mall. The mall has shops all along the way. The hotel bar doubles as the lobby reception. My room was clean and comfortable. The staff spoke enough English to get you checked-in, but don't expect more complicated requests. I didn't notice if there was air conditioning for hot days, but it was comfortably cool while I was there.
