“Magnificently restored palace hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

Like so much of the old city of Dresden, this building was essentially destroyed in the 1945 Allied air raids. It was rebuilt and has charmed guests for many years according to travel books and TripAdvisor reviews.
This was our first visit and it was a delightful three days - the service, the accommodation, the daily buffet breakfasts and a couple of other meals, the location were all high quality

great location! the rooms are very nice and the staff very helpful. You have a choice of 2-3 restaurants in the hotel and there's a little coffee shop wihch is just great to sit down and get some work done in a cosy atmophere. The hotel's bar is a really cool place to chill after work and they have an impressive choice of drinks. The hotel has a fitness center and pool. I found the fitness center to be a bit small and limited in terms of equipment, but hey, you're in the middle of the old town... mind as well go outside for a run!
The breakfast buffet was nice, but a bit pricey for a quick bite before heading to meetings.

Yes and Yes- location is more than perfect - you are n the middle of old city beauty. Lots of bars and restaurants also located nearby.
Breakfast is perfect - with champaigne, fresh juices and pancakes according to your choice.
Stuff is supernoce and helful.
Wifi free, but you need to reconnect every 15 min, otherway its gonna be charged.
Spa is ok with pool and small sauna, but for this price its nice to have jgacuzzi also.

The beauty of the place is not it´s main asset. Staff is extremely cordial and very professional. kind yet not pompous. Beautiful breakfast, fabuslous room service, great decor, great rooms. Location is simply perfect. For the level of hotel and the price, internet should not have those many options. I still don´t unerstand why wifi is charged! Other than that, perfect!

If I wanted to single out the most appealing feature, I wouldn't choose the location (which is great) nor the facility as such (a lovely reconstruction of the old Taschenbergpalais, which was largely destroyed in a bombing raid at the end of the Second World War), but the very warm and most attentive staff.

My (standard) room was very nice and well equipped, the indoor pool on the top floor lovely, and breakfast very good (but not quite Hilton standard). All my room preferences were met on the nod.

What I do NOT appreciate is Kempinski's tendency to charge very stiffly for extras which should (and often are) included in the room rate; e.g. € 25 for 24 hours of Internet access is simply ridiculous and, I believe, German record.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 23, 2013

I stayed at this hotel in September of 2012 for just one night sadly, but it was a good experience for the most part. The best thing about this hotel is its central location in Dresden. It is within walking distance of every major attraction. I was on a very tight schedule and was able to see the Zwinger, the town church, the jewels of the Green Vault and tiled mosaic wall of Kings in a few hours and still not feel rushed at all. The room was immaculate and well appointed. My only complaint with the room was that the bed was extremely hard. I know that some people enjoy a firm mattress, however this bed was like sleeping on the floor. That is the only reason I did not rate the hotel with 5 stars.

Room Tip: Ask in advance for a softer mattress so that you can get a decent night's sleep.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 13, 2013

We stayed for a couple of nights with my family at the Kempinski Taschenbergpalais and this is a really a great choice if you plan to stay i.
I rate only 3 on 5 as I experienced one "incident" which is completely unacceptable for a 5-star hotel. Another story shows that this hotel doesn't provide 5-star service which is a shame for a brand such as Kempinski.

Here are the general thoughts about the hotel.

Pros :
- perfect location in Dresden
- the hotel itself in a Palais is beautiful, make you feel like staying in a Grande Dame hotel
- rooms are really nice and comfortable with very high ceiling giving an impression of space. The small living room area is super nice to relax
- there is a nice swimming pool which is really pleasant even If the water seemed a bit cold
- nice Christmas decorations

Cons:
- no fresh water in the room. It's not mandatory of course but i consider pretty normal that a 5-star hotel provides complimentrty bottles of water
- no coffee / tea facilities which is extremely surprising
- no free internet even if there is a frustrating free restricted access that you can use 10min before you get disconnected. I know that many 5-star hotel still don't provide free internet access but I consider that a hotel can't pretend to offer luxury service whil asking 20euros to connect to the internet...
- no dock for mp3
- duvets are a bit small
- sauna area is really average
- prices for food and especially room service are too high for the city

And finally I would like to tell two stories which prove that the hotel doesn't deliver a 5-star service, which is a shame, otherwise the hotel could be almost perfect.

1) we had a tea break at the Vestibul cafe. Everything was nice except that they tried to charge us for a pot of hot chocolate while we ordered only a cup.
We had to argue for 10min with the waiter and then a supervisor that they charged us for something we didn't order. They tried for several minutes to explain that we were wrong because we actually had a large cup which contained the same capacity than a pot, so we had to pay for a pot, even if we never ordered a pot !!
They finally gave up and accepted to refund the difference, after a 10min stressful conversation.

I find quite unbelievable that you have to argue for 10min for a mistake made by the staff. Even at McDonalds they recognize their mistakes more quickly and deliver a much better service. Pretty steep while you're expecting a 5-star service.

2) We decided to purchase an umbrella from the hotel during check out at noon. At 4pm while taking our luggage to go to the train station, they forgot to give us the umbrella that we paid 4 hours ago.
This kind of story could happen and it's no big deal. But as we notified the hotel through an e-mail 2 days later they didn't apologize and proposed us to pay an additionnal 15 euros to send it to our home.
One more time it look likes that they are not good at recognizing their mistakes and finding the best solution to correct it.

In conclusion I would say that this is a nice hotel but don't have too high expectations in terms of service.
