Located at the confluence of the Rhein and Main rivers, Mainz was founded by the Romans is 36BC. It was a location of major strategic importance to the romans. There are many roman ruins located through out the city.
When they were building the Hilton near the bridge, they uncovered an ancient Roman shipyard. Hilton corporation helped fund the museum which houses the find. It was one of the largest collection of ancient roman ships & shipbuilding related artifacts found north of the alps.
