“good breakfast but somewhat outdated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

a little bit far from Koblenz Hauptbahnhof about 20 min by bus and 30 min interval waiting time. Rooms without phone, fridge, air conditioner and elevator. There are no pictures on the wall very simple. Room under garage doors for 3 person has no WiFi you should go to the main hall. They have problems with internet. Good breakfast though and close to Mosel river to hike and to bike. Good cheap wine store just minutes from hotel with local wines. Another station Koblenz Guls just 5 min from hotel. Good for this price but need to be updated.

Room Tip: rooms in the main building not on the third floor

Hotel-Weinhaus Grebel is in Güls, a suburb of Koblenz, by the Moselle river. The hotel has parking in the yard down the side and it's situated on a quiet side street, so it seems secure enough.

The restaurant looks rustic and very German. Tried their Wienerschnitzel with fries/chips, which was very nice and homely, served with horseradish sauce, a slice of lemon and a side salad with a nice dressing. Try the local "Koblenzer" beer! The restaurant doesn't have exact opening hours. There's a set opening time, but they close "am Ende", which we understood to mean "whenever people decide to leave" ... so the first night, when we came downstairs to see if the restaurant was still open, it wasn't, and we didn't know when it was supposed to have closed.

The man that checked us in spoke some English (not a lot, mind) and was helpful in showing us where to park the car. He offered to help us with our bags, but we declined. He was also very helpful with which bus to take into Koblenz and where from (around the corner - literally), saying shops would be open until 8pm. If you're two or more, get a group day ticket. It's valid for 24 hours for up to five people and works out cheaper than two single person day tickets. (Thank you, helpful bus driver!)

We stayed in a room on the third (top) floor - be aware that there is NO LIFT. The top of the stairwell had a few small spiders in a corner, and the whole place looks like it's stuck in the past. The room in particular: 70s net curtains made from brown yarn, 70s brown furniture, and the bathroom was like 50 shades of brown (see picture). The bed's headboard had two flourescent tubes behind it. Looking out of the window, you could see some of the surrounding vinyards.

On the plus side, there was a flatscreen digital TV (only CNN in English), a modern clock radio, and free wifi access. Just ask in the reception (i.e. pub) and they'll give you a print-out of the username and password for the network. We were also given a LAN cable, because there's no wifi reception on the third floor, but the same access code could be used in the room on the laptop as well as using the wifi downstairs in the restaurant. Internet was a bit slow, but the laptop we had brought was ancient.

Both duvet and pillows were filled with feathers, so we used our own pillows instead. Room got quite stuffy in the night and the duvet was a bit warm. Breakfast was very good: a selection of cold meats, cheeses, sandwich spreads and fresh breads, and cereals.

We chose this hotel because it had free parking and was the best value we could find around Koblenz. It might be stuck in the 1970s, but the people were very friendly and helpful, and the food was really nice, so I'd definitely consider going back.

Don't get me wrong. The hotel is placed in a tiny and peaceful square close to the Mosel river but my night there was nosiy becasue there was a kind of fight during the night outside the hotel, with cops involved. Besides, I killed a couple of BIG spiders before going to sleep. However, the room was very good, big TV set, clean bathroom and a good closet.

I booked three rooms for our party, all on 3rd floor close together and all well-appointed and spotlessly clean. The upside of the 3rd floor is that it is quiet and there are views of the village and/or hills from the rooms. The downside is that there is no elevator! This was our first stop after a long day travel from UK (6am Le Shuttle to Calais). After exploring Koblenz (easy drive if you have SatNav) we returned to the hotel for dinner, which was surprisingly good local fare with excellent local wine, all at very reasonable prices. I'm a little surprised by other comments about the staff - this is mainly a local pub/wine-bar/bistro with rooms not a 5-star hotel!. All the staff tried their best to be helpful and we had no complaints at all. Breakfast also fine - usual selection of cold meat, cheese, eggs, bread, fruit, coffee/tea etc. This hotel has free parking, and the village of Güls is quite picturesque. Great location, happy guests.

The hotel is located in a small village manned Güls, along the Mosel, 6 km from Koblenz. The landscapes along the Mosel and Rhein are absolutely breath taking!
We booked hotel Grebel because it's close to bike path's along the Mosel and Rhein, and the train station just a few minutes away giving us the possibilities to bring our bikes on the train to Koblenz, Mainz and other cities in the area.
The rooms are simple, comfortable, good size and clean. Beds, duvets and pillows are of good quality. Decoration is a bit outdated. Large recently refurbished bathroom with a good shower. Free Wi-Fi worked well in the rooms. English, French and of course German TV-channels.
Breakfast was typical German with various types of ham, cheese, bread, cereals and some orange juice, coffee or tea.
The staff, however, was not very professional. We got a feel of Fawlty Towers with a female Manuel and a female Basil struggling to get things working and taking out some of their stress on the hotel guest's. The first Friday morning not enough breakfast tables had been set despite the fact that the Hotel was fully booked for a long week-end. Friday morning when I wanted to leave the key at the reception "Manuel/a" did not inform me that I should bring the key with me. In the early evening when we returned we found that the Hotel door was locked, and after ringing the door bell a couple of times "Basil" came to open the door telling us in a not very friendly manner that we should have brought our key with us because the staff had their day off. Nor "Basil" or "Manuel/a" speaks any English. However, their lack of manners was clearly not linked to language problems as main part of the guest where Germans, also my partner speaks quite good German.
We did not try the restaurant as we had a bit too much of the Fawlty tower. We found some nice restaurants within a short walk along the Mosel where the staff was very friendly, professional and could speak excellent English.
I could consider to return to Grebel only because the rooms are good value for money and the location close to bike paths.

A poor welcome, a smoke stinking room, which admittedly was changed quickly, but without an apology and a poor breakfast are my recent memories. I was NOT impressed. Oh, and the room was gloomy with a broken shower.

One helpful member did help me with free WiFi. She was the exception.
