“Its a budget hotel, do expect the worst!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

I booked into this budget hotel for 3 nights as it was very conveniently located near the railways station of Essen and they offered free wifi, at a good price (I go to Essen often, but my preferred budget hotel was fully booked that week). However I checked out after the first night. It was totally not worth saving the money! Its very run down, room interiors were so dated and furnishings were in bad wear and tear. The bathroom reminded me of public toilets that dates from 1970s (few of them about in London these days!). the wifi didn't work unless you were sat in the public stairwell, or down in the reception room. I checked out because the guy managing the reception on the first night was very rude to the point of threatening. Although when I explained to a different receptionist the next morning and told them I was checking out, they were understanding (they did not quibble with me when I said I will only pay one night stay, nor force me to honour my 3 nights booking), but no one apologised to me or enquired further about the incident that took place. Very odd. Almost as if that happens frequently. Only check in here if you are really really desperate.

Went to Essen for Techno Classica, classic car show. Hotel Kessing is convenient for the station (HBf), but that's about the best of it. Room was basic, clean, but rather tired. Smelt of smoke. Breakfast was basic but good, and the people friendly. Not particularly cheap
Wouldn't recommend.
And the road outside is a race track for ambulances, sirens all night.

Room Tip: Rooms on the north have the benefit of hearing the ambulances all night.

On arrival you will notice how the entrance door is in poor condition and it doesn't get any better.

The reception area has loose laid mats everywhere that either trip you up or slide under foot.

The hotel stairs and corridors look like they where last painted in the early seventies (that's a compliment)

I was on the 4th floor in a single room. it was clean! The bed was like sleeping on a straw bail and the European pillows are just as bad as the bed. My room was freezing as the heating had been turned off. Soon warmed up but noisy. The shower was good!

Sleep was disturbed by the constant sound of a dripping boiler or tank

Breakfast was basic to say the least, Bread rolls Ham Cheese and a boiled egg if you are lucky.

I felt like there was another person in the room all night even though I was alone.

My recommendation. Go around the corner to the Holiday inn express

Room Tip: find another hotel
