“Very beautiful and comfort with two small defects”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 18, 2013

I stayed here for four nights in July. The hotel is clean and the bed is very comfort. There is a beautiful and small size pool in 3rd floor, it is free for guests and you can enjoy swimming although you should pass few corridors to reach it(a bit like a maze!). Do not remember to bring a 1 Euro coin with you to put in the locker if you like to use locker.
The hotel has a very beautiful breakfast backyard with small endless pool surrounded by flowers and looking at an old beautiful church. The breakfast itself is very good with a large selection of cheese.
The bad thing is that you could not find a shop near the hotel, if you like to buy any thing like water, fruits, etc. Although a big shopping center is about 15 minutes walking distance from the hotel. Another defect is that hotel do not have coffee/tea set in the room and the WiFi is not free. Anyhow I will stay again in this hotel.

Friendly staff, comfortable rooms, clean and a wonderful breakfast accompanied by a pianist.
Our room the first night smelled like fresh polished furniture, but they gladly changed us.
The staff helped me find info of things that i needed.
Did not have noise problems, although my room was on the main street.

Room Tip: Definitely ask for non smoking.

The Mercure Plaza in Essen is a very coney hotel. Not far from the train station, though if you carry two pieces of luggage take a taxi (less than 10€ to the hotel).
Room was spacious and very quiet, facing the backyard of a church.
It is located close to the main street for restaurants (Ruttensheider Strasse), where you have several good alternatives for lunch and dinner. Dinning outside is quite pleasant in this street.
Be sure to know in advance whether your reservation includes breakfast or not, as it is expensive. You can get breakfast outside easily, saving some euros.
Just next door you have a nice museum, with a good collection of paintings from 19th - early 20th century (I was not so keen on the modern art section).
The advertised pool as restricted hours of use as it is shared with a next-door elderly center - you can use it either before 9 am or after 5 pm, which was nowhere visible before getting there.
As I value most the quality of sleep, it was a good choice.

Room Tip: The rooms not facing the street - and especially the last one of the inner side - are very quiet.

The hotel is situated about a 10 minute walk from the station not worth taking a taxi unless it is hot and you end up with a sticky shirt.
The hotel reception was very friendly and helpful. The room I slept in, 204, is a good size, very clean and pleasantly overlooking a courtyard and fountain but no views.
The bed is very comfortable with a very good shower and bathroom.
If the price is right then really it does make your stay more pleasant , it would be advisable to get the business package which gives you internet access and breakfast at a good rate.
Expect to pay on average if there are no conferences from 80 - 120 euros
The breakfast is excellent and caters for all
I believe it does have a swimming pool but I didn't get time to use it.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

We stayed at the Mercure in Essen for 3 nights on a business trip and I thought it was a very good experience. Firstly I cannot praise enough the service standard in the hotel. It gets 5 stars for service. Every member of staff was very friendly, competent and helpful. The room is fine, here it shows that it is a little dated, thin carpet on concrete, black furniture. The bathroom is small but got a good bath. If you take a shower you will water your bathroom. The squeeze bottle shower gel and soap is a lot nicer than in the Sheraton accross the road. Towels are a bit flimsy, old and small. The bed is fine, the mattress a little uneven and the pillow a bit too tough for my taste. The duvet was just a joke. A smallish single duvet is too small and heavy. Get a lighter and larger duvets please. Most rooms face a busy road and you cannot have the window open because of the noise. The windows are totally sound proof. The aircon did not work and the room was uncomfortably warm. The breakfast is really good with a lot of choice of fresh typical german breakfast food (breads, rolls, cakes), cooked breakfast, fresh fruits and many nice teas and coffees. Staff is very attentive in a busy breakfast room. The bar serves a good selection of wines and other drinks. As a Le Club member you get 15% discount in the bar which one of the staff told us. I can highly recommend this immaculately clean hotel in Essen. Please improve your duvets, towels and mattresses and you will be a 5 star hotel.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing away from the road. However they cost more.

The Mercure is on a fairly busy corner next to an elderly residence home. The staff are pleasant, though their English was at times poor. I found that many of the rooms, while comfortable enough, were small. You have to pay for Internet (which is silly these days). There are a number of good restaurants nearby. Outside of conference times when hotel rooms are scarce in Essen, it is usually worth the money.

A quiet part of the City, 15 minutes walk from the central station, 5 minutes from tube / tram. Virually next door to the superb Folkwang Museum. Ideal for business or simply just a very pleasant stay.
