“Impressive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

The Essen castle - the mansion of the Krupp family, now a museum, is located beautifully above lake Baldeney in a fine park. Definitely the home of a family who shaped industry (at least...) for decades. While it offers vast amounts of space and 19th century splendor, it tells the history of the powerful Krupp family.
Not the kind of castle with knights and kings, but a fine piece of history of this industrial region.

“Impressive building, nice garden, view over Essen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2013

The former villa of the Krupp dynasty is impressive to see both from the inside and outside. There are changing exhibitions in the house and the park around the villa is perfect for some calm, nice promenades. You can also catch some amazing views over Essen from the viewpoint, which is located close by the building.

“Big, powerful, bourgeois”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 20, 2013

The home of the steel magnates Krupp resembles one of these late 19 century operas or national theatres: A richly decorated giant shoe-box, but not a king's palace. This first impression is confirmed inside. The spaces are enormous, but the interior with its omnipresent wooden panelling breathes a spirit of grand bourgeoisie rather than nobility. Size is the dominant stylistic tool: Ceiling height is approximately 8 meters, the doorways are large enough to let pass a truck and the fire places have the size of garage doors. It is as if the entire villa (which was constructed in a mere 2 years and a half) was designed for beings of maybe 3 meters size. It would have been the ideal home for the Naa'vi people from David Cameron's Avatar movie.
The fit-out is relatively unspectacular; most of the furniture has gone. The pavillon next to the main villa contains an exhibition about the Krupp family and their role in the steel industry. It is surely interesting, but as the whole venue is financed by the Krupp foundation it is mildly self-admirative.

“Greatest attraction in Essen”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 26, 2013

Impressive building and garden. Villa Hügel was the mansion of the Krupp family, which was the most influential industrial family in Germany. The contrast with the life circumstances of the factory workers is enormous.
