“Truly 5 star, even for Cologne”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 21, 2012

I am a regular Cologne visitor. In the past I stayed at the InterContinental Cologne, now a Dorint hotel. For my last visit, I did choose the InterContinental Dusseldorf. This because I am an IC Ambassador with a free weekend night voucher to spend. Normally I would not have chosen it, but I will consider it in the future, even for my Cologne visits. A pleasant surprise indeed.

The hotel is very well located on a prime address (Koeningsallee) right in the city centre, but it is also a very clean and quit area. You can open a window and still have a good rest. The clean, save and light parking (KO 59; Euro 28,00 a day) is easy to find and reach from anywhere and it' s just 40 km easy traffic to the city centre of Cologne. Shopping (Stillwerk, the usual big brands, Abercrombie & Fitch, Peek & Cloppenburg) is all around. The Altstadt is within walking distance. The new Hyatt is in the hip new Hafen area, but it's a far away from where you like to be most of the time.

The hotel atrium is impressive but not overwhelming. The reception is correct, efficient but still friendly. You are welcome in your suit and your jeans. It does not have the Breidenbacher attitude (the other decent, more expensive, address in town). The room is not huge, but still spacious. Good bathroom. Everything is functional and working. More important: great bed, window to open, completely dark at night. Ok, they did forget to bring the fruit, but that's the only remark I can make. Try to avoid an atrium room (superior). Ask for a room facing the outside (to open the window...).

If you want to have a swim or if you want to work out, the Holmes Place offers you all the facilities you can think of. If you did not book a room with breakfast, it might be a bit difficult to find inexpensive breakfast in the morning, especially on sunday when bakeries are closed (... it's different from Cologne).

One of the top assets of this hotel is concierge Felix Kreus.
Friendly, being on top of his business, providing personal service, keeping exactly the right distance. He is the almost picture perfect reliable German guy. This is what you need if you want to plan something special, need to have something fixed, or need some real assistance. Felix, thanks!

Room Tip: Avoid atrium rooms. Book breakfast included on sundays.

Spent only night in the hotel, and i was really impressed from the lobby to the room.
(a bit less with the Internet access fees)

The good:
- location: right in the main shopping area, and 15mins walking from the old city. Metro to the train station is conveniently located (5mins walking)
- the service: very professional as you could expect
- layout: like the lobby and the feeling of space
- comfy bed: had a great night sleep, but unfortunately i had to get up
- bathroom: large as my hotel room in Amsterdam.
- funky, but no too much, just well done

The bad:
- why is Internet so expensive? (and the signin process was not working properly)
- and for the details: TV is not flat

Conclusion:
I will choose the same hotel when back in Dusseldorf

We have been one night at the Intercontinental Düsseldorf taking part to a congress. This hotel is well located on the Königsallee, the main shopping street of the city. The lobby is a luxury design, as well as the rooms. You may have the view on the inside (lobby) or outside. In both cases, you will not be disturbed by any noise. The room itself is very confortable and you can see the room from the bedroom and vice versa. Last but not least, in the morning, you get a very wide buffet breakfast.
If you can afford it, go there when you go to Düsseldorf.

The hotel is great. Really good rooms, great standard, feels very new and freshly renovated. Situation with the internet and WiFi and pathertic. Its a 21st century and internet should be available. There is no wifi in the room and i think cable internet per day is approx EUR 24 or something like that. Its embarrassing.

They charge you €24 per day to use the Internet even if you are staying on a "Club" floor. As if that isn't bad enough, the wireless Internet service is unstable. And even if you go to the Club lounge to use the computers there, the same pay wall comes up on the screen telling you how much you need to pay to use the Internet for x amount of time. When I mentioned this to the guest services staff she typed in a code to allow me to use the Internet "free" for 15 minutes. I was on a business trip and needed to stay in touch with the office, type reports etc. 15 minutes of computer time is not sufficient. So this ridiculous cap-in-hand scenario unfolded whereby I had to go back to her each time the 15 minute time slot was about to end so that she could re-enter the code to allow me to use the Internet for a further 15 minutes. I can't remember the last time I stayed in a hotel with such stingy policies.

Though this hotel does have an excellent location, the quality of the food served through the room service channel is inconsistent, the room service is unavailable between 12am and 6:30am and the housekeeping staff (for reasons best known to them) left a dirty paper towel on the counter top next to the sink in the bathroom on three different occasions. Therefore, I would not recommend the Intercontinental Dusseldorf for business travelers, neither will I be staying there again.

Room Tip: There is little to no difference between the regular room and the Club room. I moved from a standard...

Dear guest,

Thank you very much for visiting us again. The cosmopolitan citizens of Dusseldorf love to share their gym with our guests, as well as our guests love it to get in touch with the local people.

We look forward to be hosting you again at the InterContinental Dusseldorf and at our Bar fifty nine.

The Intercontinental in Dusseldorf is unquestionably the best place to stay. Luxurious and convenient, good food, quiet, and the concierge (Felix especially) and all staff will go out of their way to be sure you are happy and have what you need and want. The restaurant is pricey but there are other places nearby to eat that are very good (esp Monkeys East and West), and the main shopping district, with everything from a good grocery, bakeries, Starbucks, sidewalk cafes, mid-range and haute couture shops, is right across the street. There is a nice small park less than a block away. The subway station is about a block away. It's worth paying extra for this hotel. There are cheaper places near the convention center, but, they are not very nice. We come for Drupa every four years and learned our lesson when looking at an inexpensive hotel closer to the conference - there was NOTHING to do out there, (plus few non-smoking rooms and the smoke came through the non-A/C heating system). A spouse would be taking an expensive half hour taxi back to town every day, maybe even twice a day if you wanted a nice dinner together. There may be less expensive hotels downtown (Holiday Inn) but you have to book them about six or more months in advance if you are here for a big conference. If you like art nouveau glass, Europe's biggest exhibit of same is in one of the museums here, in a beautiful park. Hope to get out to the Neanderthal museum (about a half hour away) this trip. Need to find out if I can get a cotton blanket instead of the hot, hot down comforter, tho!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with window facing out, particularly into the courtyard next door which has trees; so...

Dear Frankee,
we are so happy to host such nice guest as you are at the InterContinental Düsseldorf. During Drupa the city turns to be even more cosmopolitan. It seems that you enjoyed visiting the most beautiful places around here. The hole team is looking forward to welcome you back very soon.
