Just got back from 3 days in Dusseldorf and stayed here at the Hotel Excelsior. The cost of the hotel I thought was very reasonable at £60 per night for a nice double room. The hotel itself I would guess was built or last refurbished in the late 60`s or early 70`s. The decor seemed to lend itself to that kind of style. The rooms were massive. The bathroom we had, had brown tiles, and a green bathroom suite straight from around 1970. The toilet wasnt bolted to the floor so it moved around when you used it. However, everything was spotless. Very clean. The bedroom itself was really good. 2 big cupboards for storage, a nice new Sony LCD tv on the wall. Large selection of channels including some HD ones although we only found 1 English channel. Not a problem however as we did not come here to watch TV! The bed was very comfortable, certainly one of the most comfortable ive had in a hotel. All in all, the room did exactly what we want and we were happy with it.
The breakfast was really nice. Good selection of a cooked breakfast (the sausages, scrambled eggs & potatoes in particular were all amazing), 12 different Cereals to choose from, fruit, yoguarts, plus the normal continental range of hams, cheese, breads. We certainly had our fill each morning.
The staff were all extremely friendly. Normally in hotels you get the odd member of staff who is nice, some who are okay and a few miserable ones. But in this hotel, everyone we spoke to was really friendly & happy. The desk staff always were very keen to tell us places to visit, the breakfast lady was very attentive and happy, even the cleaners were more than happy to show us our room without us even asking.
The hotel is about a 8 minute walk from the old town, so its in a nice quiet location. The walk is actually really enjoyable as you can walk through a choice of about 3 parks and its very scenic - lots to see - including the benches made out of OSRAM light bulbs! We certainly didnt feel the need to get the subway or a taxi. A taxi however from the market square back to the hotel is about a 3 minute drive and 5.50euros. Taxi from airport to hotel costs around 25 euros and is about 10mins if that.
Id certainly recommend this hotel.
Only bad point id say is that the TV in the lobby area is so amazingly big I now want to buy one for my house.
