We often spend the night at Dusseldorf airport before an early flight to Manchester and have always used the Maritim hotel but on this trip the prices were very high for some reason, both for the Maritim and the Sheraton. I chose the Sheraton simply because it was a few Euros cheaper. The hotel is easily reached from the terminal and entered via a lift in the car park. The welcome was warm and professional and our room perfectly fine. A huge kind sized bed was comfortable and the bathroom, though small, was classy and everything worked well.
This was an exercise in comparison with the Maritim, whose large blue sign could be seen from our room. The Sheraton is older, less modern inside and I think our room was also smaller. In terms of facilities and comfort there was little in it; mini bar, TV, good beds etc, but the Sheraton had individual bottles of toiletries and the novelty value of a garden view. All the rooms are on one floor, set out in a circular design above the car park, with full length opening windows looking out onto landscaped gardens. We had masses of wardrobe space but on the window side of the bed the was no bedside table; I had to move the one armchair to move in the accompanying little table. It all felt slightly cramped.
We ate in the restaurant and had a good dinner with friendly service. Our dining experiences at the Maritim have not been great despite its choice of restaurants, and this was a very enjoyable meal. Back in the room, it was very quiet and we slept well.
Wifi is an incredible €19 for 24 hours, but when I mentioned that we usually stay at the Maritim, I was given complimentary access. I also got a free bottle of water in the room.
For convenience, comfort and service, there's little to choose between them; the Maritim is high-gloss, modern and imposing, while the Sheraton is less so, but I liked the garden view. That particular night, rooms in both hotels cost well over €200 and for this I would expect a bit more in terms of a bathrobe, some good toiletries and free wifi, but I guess it is a captive market.
